As I hurried back to the ward with the bead in hand, Chu Fan was organizing my clothes without looking up. "What trouble did you get into this time?" he asked.
"It's not like I wanted to stir things up," I pouted, glancing at the little girl who quickly vanished from sight. I stretched out my hand in front of him and said, "Look at this."
Chu Fan, who had been folding clothes, paused when he touched the White Pearl. His eyes flickered as he grasped my wrist and asked, "Where did you get this?"
So I recounted what had just happened. To my surprise, Chu Fan frowned. I knew what he was thinking. I plopped down on the bed and said, "I find it strange too. If someone sealed your body, they would definitely hide the clues deep. Just like how the first bead was initially deceived, and later—"
I hesitated, instinctively touching my chest to skip over that topic. "Now that I've gotten one so easily, do you think it's real?"
"It's real."
I let out a sigh of relief. "No matter what, as long as it's real, that's good enough. We've got two now; we'll definitely find the other five soon."
Chu Fan sat beside me and took the bead from my hand to examine it closely. "Do you know what this is?"
I shook my head. "What is it?"
"Still not telling you." He put the bead in his pocket and continued sorting my clothes. I pouted again. "Fine, don't tell me! I just need to focus on finding the beads."
"You just need to focus on giving me heirs; the rest isn't your concern. Once you're feeling better, we'll start."
His sudden seriousness made my face flush hot. My mind raced to change the subject when a thought struck me.
"By the way, why would a spirit like that little girl become a container for a beast? Aren't containers supposed to be just shells? A spirit needs a shell to exist, right?"
Chu Fan paused but didn't steer the conversation back. Instead, he explained, "Ghosts are products of human death; humans are the shells for ghosts. Once lost, only souls remain. However, in the underworld, there exists a type of ghost that is born there; they have bodies and are in many ways similar to humans."
"Like this little girl? And you?"
"You could say that. She formed a barrier similar to a Container by absorbing resentment, and because her aura is close to Tao Wu, she was chosen. I, however, was not."
"What are you then?"
Chu Fan paused for a moment, pressed his lips together, and looked at me with deep eyes, thick as ink, hiding any glimmer of light. For some reason, being stared at like that made my heart ache suddenly, and I instinctively grasped the bedspread, holding my breath.
"Jun Chong?"
"My Great-Grandma was human, and my Great-Grandfather was a ghost."
He only said this much and then fell silent. The brief pause made me feel that there were things here I did not know about, like a wound attached to him.
After spending another day in the hospital, I finally went home. After running to the hospital every day, lying on my long-lost bed felt incredibly comfortable. Due to my health issues, I had taken sick leave from school, allowing me to indulge in food and sleep as much as I wanted. Life was quite leisurely.
Lin You was afraid of pain but still gave Molin a drop of blood from her fingertip every day. After seven consecutive days, Molin truly woke up, but the fingertip blood had to continue. Lin You didn't complain; instead, she became even more excited.
"Anxin, now that he has drunk my blood, will he be mine from now on?"
I was drinking water at that moment and suddenly choked, spraying it all over her face. Lin You wiped her face in confusion. "What I mean is, can he be ordered around by me? Don't overthink it."
I awkwardly swallowed a mouthful of water and quietly suggested, "Why not just ask him directly?"
"Don't ask! It's decided! He looks decent enough; the main thing is he's a Taoist. You've reminded me—having a Taoist friend will be great! We can clear paths and sweep through battlefields without fear of exams or work!"
My hand holding the cup trembled again, nearly dropping it. At that moment, I had hinted at her to willingly give Molin her fingertip blood; I didn't expect her to take it all seriously.
I could almost hear Molin sneezing incessantly in the distant ward, thinking he might have caught a cold.
Since it was the weekend, there were more people on the streets. I had been recovering for a while and felt much better, while Lin You seemed to be enjoying herself, using her sick leave as an excuse to wander around.
Logically, she had been injured much worse than I had, yet she recovered so quickly. I asked Jun Chong about it, but he didn’t say much, so I didn’t think too much of it.
For me, as long as Lin You was safe, that was all that mattered.
“Hey, Anxin, look at this!”
Lin You had somehow gotten hold of a newspaper and pointed at the headline. “This case of a missing girl who was found dead happened just down the street. It’s been causing quite a stir for several days now. Apparently, women keep going missing every few days, and when they’re found, they’ve all been drained of blood. Do you think it could be a vampire? Should we investigate?”
“Pfft—”
I spat out my drink in surprise and shot her an annoyed glare. It felt like today was not going well with water; thankfully, I hadn’t swallowed it or I would have choked.
“Investigate? Are you crazy?”
“Why not?” Lin You unfolded the newspaper and examined it closely as she spoke. “You have My Ghost Husband by your side, and I have a Taoist priest with me. What’s there to be afraid of? Investigating the truth behind this case would benefit the people and allow us to bring the culprit to justice. It’s a good deed no matter how you look at it.”
I widened my eyes and reached up to touch my forehead before checking hers. “You’re not running a fever; how can your brain be so foggy?”
“I’m perfectly fine. So, are you going or not?”
“Xiao You, after everything we’ve been through with those terrifying incidents, how can you not be scared at all? Some things we can’t escape from; others we should avoid. After all, we’re human and shouldn’t meddle in that world’s affairs. Plus, if Jun Chong finds out I’m getting involved with that stuff again, he’ll be furious.”
“I think you’ve been brainwashed by him. Fine, if you won’t go, I’ll go alone. I’ll find someone else to accompany me.”
She packed her things and stood up, ready to leave. I hurriedly asked, "Who are you going to see?"
"I'm not telling you."
Lin You tossed her hair and walked out. I sighed, fully aware of her sometimes silly nature. Shaking my head, I thought it was undoubtedly Ling Feng who would be dealing with this unfortunate situation. I could only hope that Ling Feng could handle her this time.
Since Chu Fan had asked me to wait here for him, I ordered another drink and leisurely looked through the newspaper Lin You had left behind. It reported that three women aged between 18 and 28 had recently gone missing in The City under mysterious circumstances. The police investigation revealed no prior signs of trouble, and their families were completely unaware of anything amiss. Some speculated they had run away without taking any belongings, while others suggested abduction, but no ransom calls had been received, leaving everyone puzzled.
It wasn't until the first victim was found three days after her disappearance in a small alley that the situation drew serious attention. Her body was completely shriveled, as if all the blood and moisture had been drained from it, resembling a desiccated corpse.
This prompted a thorough investigation.
The police worked tirelessly and discovered that all three women had died in the same location, which lacked any surveillance cameras due to its secluded nature; few people passed through there, and it wasn't a residential or commercial area, leaving them with no leads.
It quickly turned into a cold case, and half a month later, it remained unsolved.
"Do you think a vampire could be responsible for killing those women?"
At that moment, two high school girls sat down in the empty space beside me, holding comics in their hands. They clearly loved all things related to anime.
The Long-Haired Girl nodded in agreement when she heard me. "I saw that photo; she looked really shriveled. Although I'm not sure if there were bite marks on her neck, there's a ninety percent chance it's a vampire."
"Do you think that vampire would take an interest in me?" The Short-Haired Girl said dreamily, her eyes practically sparkling with heart-shaped glimmers. "If he did, I'd have no regrets even if I died."
"You hopeless romantic," the Long-Haired Girl said as she finished ordering food and rolled her eyes at her friend. "You were just talking about the Handsome Manager; now you're fantasizing about this? But honestly, I think you should pursue the store manager instead. If there really is a vampire out there, you'd probably change your mind about dying."
"But I like both of them!"
I shook my head in disbelief. "Vampires?"
I thought of how they reminded me of my younger self, spending days fantasizing about various handsome characters from comics, and I had once been infatuated with vampires too—after all, they were all incredibly attractive.
With a sudden "thud," I accidentally dropped my bag on the ground. Just as I bent down to pick it up, a long, fair hand reached out before me and retrieved the bag.
When I looked up, I was taken aback by how stunning the man was. His skin was pale and flawless, like fine porcelain, and his deep-set eyes resembled obsidian. The slight upward tilt at the corners gave him an air of charm that made one feel both flattered and overwhelmed.
His sleek black hair brushed against his fair neck, and the delicate lines of his features seemed meticulously crafted, as if each stroke had been painstakingly perfected. He wore a tailored black coat that hugged his form just right, with a simple black ribbon tying his white shirt at the collar. It was neither the stiffness of a suit nor the casualness of everyday wear; it exuded an elegance that suggested a gentleman had arrived.
"Miss, your bag," he said.
It took me a moment to realize how rude I had been. I quickly accepted the bag and thanked him, "Thank you."
"You're welcome," he replied lightly with a smile before turning to leave.
Suddenly, the girl with short hair let out a squeal of delight as she pointed at the man. "Ah! That's the owner of 'For You in This Life'! So handsome! Quick, I'm going to faint!"
"'For You in This Life'?" I repeated softly, feeling like I had seen that name somewhere before. However, I couldn't deny that this man was indeed strikingly handsome. As he walked into the store, many women around us seemed unable to contain themselves.
I smiled and rubbed my forehead; if Lin You were here, she would definitely react the same way.
