The elderly woman was a familiar face in the neighborhood, undoubtedly more acquainted with the surroundings than I was. When she heard my question, she chuckled, "Dear, are you still half-asleep? There’s no fortune-telling booth around here."
"None?" I replied skeptically, explaining, "There was a man with a goatee who set up a stall to the left at the entrance of the community. I saw him during the day and even spoke to him; surely others must have seen him too!"
"Ah, dear, I think you might be feeling the pressure from your studies lately."
Her sudden remark puzzled me. "Not at all?"
"Then what were you doing alone, facing the wall outside the community? You were in a strange half-sitting posture, mumbling to yourself right where you mentioned."
"Ma'am, you must have seen it wrong. I was talking to the fortune teller."
"But there has never been a fortune teller there! I pass by that spot every day on my way to the market; I wouldn’t mistake it." She looked at me suspiciously. "Dear, are you possessed or something?"
No fortune teller?
How could that be?
I pinched myself hard to confirm this wasn’t a dream. But if it wasn’t a dream, why could no one else see what I had seen?
Or was that fortune teller a ghost?
But if he is a ghost, why would he tell me how to obtain the Human Skin Mask?
I firmly believe that the box will return, but right now, there is no one to help me.
The nagging voice of the old woman no longer penetrated my eardrums; to me, the fortune teller had once been a lifeline, but now he was just another layer of fear.
The wooden box in my hand felt like a bloody hand gripping me, impossible to throw away. I didn't know where to go; after taking a few steps forward, I finally crouched in the corner of the wall and cried softly.
I had never felt such fear and helplessness before. It was because my life had always been smooth sailing, let alone encountering those things.
Thinking back to the Ghost Marriage with Jun Chong and now the Human Skin Mask, they were all connected to those entities. Although Jun Chong also frightened me, compared to now, the lingering presence of this Human Skin Mask terrified me even more. Yet at this moment, Jun Chong was not by my side.
"Hey, didn't I tell you? The game is all about The Cycle of Five Elements; using its opposing attributes will definitely work..."
Just when I didn’t know what to do, a boy walked by, loudly instructing someone on how to play the game on his phone, and a flash of inspiration struck me.
I had played games for a while before and understood the principles of The Cycle of Five Elements.
So I took a taxi to this park that was still under construction. Surrounding me were flowerbeds yet to be planted with flowers and grass; it was the perfect place for what I needed to do.
Since earth conquers water in the five elements, and the Human Skin Mask is soft and watery in nature, I took it out of the box and buried it in the flowerbed.
Then I found a stone and smashed the box. I refused to believe that it could return after this.
As soon as I left, a pair of polished shoes stopped at the spot where I had destroyed the box. The shoes were gleaming, and the trousers were impeccably clean, indicating that their owner was someone who valued cleanliness.
The person stared at the scattered wooden pieces, shook their head with a sigh, and then bent down to pick them up.
By the time I returned home, it was already past ten at night. I locked the door and went to bed. To prevent myself from dreaming again, I took a sleeping pill and slept soundly until dawn.
The first thing I did upon waking up was search for that wooden box. I looked around three times without finding it, which finally allowed me to breathe a sigh of relief.
Since I had class in the morning, I didn’t dare to delay. After freshening up, I headed out.
I walked quickly, so I didn’t notice that after I left, a woman covered in blood appeared in the living room mirror, her eyes filled with hatred as she stared in the direction I had gone.
“It’s you who forced my hand; don’t blame me for being rude.”
Yawning, I made my way downstairs. It felt like someone was whispering in my ear, but when I turned around, there was no one there. Just as I was feeling puzzled, Lin You was already calling my name from over there.
