In the desolate desert, palaces stood silently under the crimson glow of the blood moon, casting long shadows.
This was the Demon Realm's Twelve Houses, the old lair where Li Xiaonan had once discarded twelve puppets.
Nestled among the Twelve Houses was a main castle built from uniformly sized white stones; this was the love nest of Demon Emperor Nan Muzi and Demon Empress Hime.
Li Xiaonan flickered and moved directly toward the main city. Upon arriving at the city gate, he spotted a pair of golden Horned Ginseng rushing toward him.
Li Xiaonan couldn't help but glance at his own attire—clad in a black robe, not in bright red. What was up with that bull? Was it colorblind?
Wait a minute, Flower Rubbing! No wonder it looked so familiar; it was Taurus, that fool.
Li Xiaonan quickly stepped back two paces and grabbed its golden horns, saying, "Little Jin, what are you doing? Even if it's a warm welcome, you don't have to charge at me like a Horned Ginseng!"
Taurus lifted its head, eyes brimming with tears. With a pained expression, it said, "Boss, why did it take you so long to arrive? I've been stuck here for almost half a month."
Li Xiaonan's heart tightened as he coldly replied, "Why are you blocking me? I'm not a silly rabbit, and there aren't any crooked trees around here."
"My sister-in-law has been captured! Little White is dead! Boohoo... My old lair has also been taken! Who else can I turn to if not you, Boss?"
Aries had fallen, and Fei Ji had been captured.
Li Xiaonan's body jolted; this terrible news struck him like a bolt from the blue, leaving only a ringing in his ears.
He grabbed Taurus by its Horned Ginseng and lifted it up urgently. "What exactly happened?"
"Boss, this isn't the place to talk. That guy is looking for you everywhere. Come with me!" Taurus exclaimed, bouncing on short arms and legs as he grabbed Li Xiaonan's hand and swiftly dove underground.
A long corridor appeared before Li Xiaonan as he followed Taurus, his mind racing to piece together the scant information he had. All signs pointed to one person—the legendary Demon Emperor.
"Boss, we've all gathered here for now," Taurus said, stepping aside to reveal a central hall resembling a bomb shelter, filled with numerous branching paths.
Li Xiaonan frowned slightly as he looked at the Eleven Zodiac Signs; Aries was indeed missing from their ranks.
He saw them, each with grim expressions—some dejected, others furious—but thankfully, none were in despair.
"Boss," Pisces murmured, lifting his head slightly with a vacant look in his eyes. The other Zodiac Signs followed suit, calling out to Li Xiaonan one by one.
Cancer suddenly threw himself at Li Xiaonan's feet, crying out, "Wah! Boss, Aries is dead!"
Li Xiaonan took a deep breath. The Zodiac Signs were like brothers to him; even he couldn't help but feel sorrow in his heart.
He swallowed the pain rising in his chest and said coldly, "I understand. Now tell me, who can explain what happened?"
Capricorn sighed and replied, "I'll explain, Boss. Three months after you left, a guy claiming to be the Demon Emperor suddenly appeared on the Demon Realm Continent. Your sister thought you had returned and sent people to fetch him, but everyone who went never came back. Aries was closest to where that guy showed up and decided to take matters into his own hands. After that, he went missing until a month ago when we found out something was wrong—Aries' body was hung at the city gate after it was breached."
Li Xiaonan furrowed his brow tightly. Aries was no weakling; how could he have been taken down silently? The strength of the opponent must be formidable.
He asked, "Did that self-proclaimed Demon Emperor act alone or did he have accomplices?"
Capricorn frowned slightly and replied, "It was just him."
"Several Wings of Cultivation"
Capricorn shook his head and said, "I once caught a distant glimpse of him; his back was covered with countless Flesh Wings, impossible to count. Right now, all my Twelve Houses have fallen."
Li Xiaonan gasped, "He took down the Twelve Houses by himself?"
"No, it’s that all the demons in the palace suddenly rebelled. I don’t know what kind of 'drug' they took; one by one, they seemed to go mad and flock to that suddenly appearing Demon Emperor," Aquarius added from the side.
Li Xiaonan stroked his chin and began to pace. "What about Aries's body?"
The eleven of them exchanged glances and shook their heads.
"Come on, you didn’t eat him, did you?"
Cancer exclaimed anxiously, "How could we? The other demons, sure, but Aries is our brother! We could never do that. It’s just... he..."
Li Xiaonan frowned tightly. "Stop beating around the bush. Where's the body?"
Capricorn sighed and said, "It's still hanging at Aries's city gate..."
Li Xiaonan felt all the blood rush to his head, and his face turned bright red with anger. "What? You didn’t retrieve his body?"
"Boss, it’s not that we don’t want to; it’s that we can’t. Right now, the entire demon realm is filled with that guy's people. We have no way to approach Aries's palace gate."
As Capricorn spoke, he lowered his head dejectedly, but a cold light of resentment flickered in his eyes.
"Where did this guy get such charisma... What about Fei'er? Where is she imprisoned now?"
"Taurus said, 'He should still be in the main city. I've been waiting near the main city for the boss to arrive and didn't notice that guy took my sister-in-law somewhere else. By the way, that guy is currently in the main city.'
Li Xiaonan stopped and said, 'Did you dig this underground palace? Can it lead directly to the Twelve Houses?'
'Yes, this is also Gemini's idea. It's easy to gather here and easy to escape,' Capricorn nodded.
'Alright, you all stay here on standby,' Li Xiaonan said, scanning with his spiritual sense and identifying the tunnel leading to Aries before heading in that direction.
Cancer blocked his path and said, 'Boss, you can't take risks like this and let us be your cannon fodder. Now that you're here, we’re not afraid of death; we can’t let the news get to you.'
Li Xiaonan pinched Cancer's chubby face and smiled, 'You mountain fool, if you're going to die, at least die with value. Don't worry; I don't plan to confront the Demon Emperor head-on just yet. I need to retrieve Aries's body first.'
'Boss, take me and Scorpio with you. We're the two with the highest cultivation here; it’s better to have some support,' Capricorn suggested.
'No need. It's more convenient for me to act alone. You all handle things here.'
Li Xiaonan moved through the passageway, and a minute later, he appeared at the gates of Aries's palace.
As the blood moon fell, the Blood Sun rose; a new day began.
Golden-red light fell upon the palace gate's walls.
The damaged Golden Cloth still emitted a captivating glow as the cold wind howled, causing Aries to sway like a kite flying high but never free.
Aries had his eyes closed and head bowed, his fine hair lightly brushing against his cheek, looking serene.
Meanwhile, Li Xiaonan stood at a distance, gritting his teeth and glaring at everything before him. The pain in his eyes was overshadowed by his anger.
The body hung at the palace gate for all to see; there were two purposes: one was to announce it to the world, and the other was to lure me out.
I must admit this method is quite effective; I cannot ignore Aries.
Hmph, Demon Emperor, huh? It doesn't matter who you are or where you come from; we've settled this score.
I, Li Xiaonan, vow today that anyone who dares treat me like this will face eternal damnation without any chance of rebirth.
Li Xiaonan clenched his fist tightly as he shot upward.
He flicked his fingers, sending forth a brilliant light that severed the ropes binding Aries's body while he leaped forward to catch Aries as he fell.
Aries's body had already stiffened; a circular hole in his chest was hollow and constantly filled with cold wind.
Li Xiaonan took off his long robe and draped it over Aries's body, holding him tightly as he said, 'Aries, boss is here to take you home.'"
Aries leaned awkwardly against Li Xiaonan, his handsome face pressed against the warmth of Li's chest. One side was bone-chillingly cold, while the other was heart-warmingly hot.
"The corpse thief is here! The corpse thief is here! Everyone, come out and fight!" shouted a Fourteen-Winged Demon, brandishing a war spear as he leaped forward like a mischievous clown.
With his cry, a horde of demons surged in from all directions.
Li Xiaonan let out a cold laugh, cursing inwardly, Damn it, these are my people! I'm here to collect the bodies, not to be called a corpse thief!
He tightened his left arm around Aries's waist and said, "Little White, the boss knows you can't stay idle and love to fight. Today, I'll help you slaughter the city. These guys may not be strong, but they'll be enough for you to play with."
In an unprecedented move, Li Xiaonan did not use the Seven-Level Pagoda. Instead, he flipped his right palm, and Blood Soaked Freedom fell into his hand.
With a light shout of "Go," Blood Soaked Freedom swept through the crowd, severing heads from shoulders. Many demons didn't even have time to scream before meeting their demise.
Li Xiaonan continued to smile coldly; the kind-hearted person who once sought redemption for the demons had vanished without a trace. Now, all that remained in his heart was hatred and pain.
"Xiaoyao, you're too slow," Li Xiaonan said as he held Aries and soared into the air, his gaze indifferent as he looked down at the many demons below.
He stated flatly, "I don't want to kill; it's you who have gone too far." His white hair transformed into Azure Silks, his silver pupils turned into black ones. Within his Dantian, the Divine Infant stirred a powerful flow of Golden Yuan Power that coursed through his arms.
"Go accompany my Aries."
He swung his right hand, sending forth a circular beam of golden light that transformed into a Golden Crow, illuminating the entire sky.
In an instant, the world fell silent; everything came to a standstill. The demons stared blankly at the flying golden light, grinning foolishly, only to be swallowed up in an instant.
Aries remained as it was—the gates of Aries still stood, but they had turned into a dead city.
A muffled thunder rumbled across the sky, and blood rained down, staining the towers of Aries red. The ground was littered with corpses and remains, evoking a sense of horror.
Li Xiaonan maintained his cold demeanor. He raised his fingers slightly, and a thin layer of mist enveloped Aries, blocking all the blood rain.
Meanwhile, he allowed the blood to wash over him, silently bearing the sins he had just committed.
The overwhelming stench of blood repeatedly assaulted his nostrils until they became numb.
Li Xiaonan sighed softly. Though he felt frustrated, there was nothing to regret. If time were to rewind and he had to do it all over again, he would still make the same choice.
Kindness is reserved for one's own.
Half an hour after Li Xiaonan left, a demon with Flesh Wings sprouting from its back grinned and said, "Haha, this kid finally showed up."
Suddenly, it turned cold and said, "Don't even think about targeting him."
With a sneer, it replied dismissively, "Come on! He’s the reason we ended up like this. We might as well collect some interest; we won’t kill him outright."
"Don't forget our goal is Buddhism."
