Li Xiaonan was taken aback; who else could this person be but the Demon Emperor?
With a flick of his wrist, the Carefree Fan opened once more. He lightly waved it and smiled, "You finally made it!"
"Oh? So you've been waiting for me for a long time?" The Demon Emperor revealed a black folding fan in his hand and laughed arrogantly.
Li Xiaonan felt a pang of frustration, suddenly realizing he was being overshadowed. However, he was someone who could let things go easily, so he chuckled, "Of course! Not just me, but Lu Nishang has also been waiting for you for quite a while."
The Demon Emperor frowned; Lu Nishang was his Achilles' heel, and Li Xiaonan's seemingly casual remark was clearly meant to provoke him.
"I will honor our agreement," the Demon Emperor said, closing his fan and placing his hands behind his back.
Among the Ghost Commoners below, some with keen eyes gasped in surprise. "Wow! Look, that's the Demon Emperor!"
"Wow! So the great hero is friends with the Demon Emperor!"
These comments were clearly heard by both men in the air.
The Demon Emperor suddenly sneered, "You really are something, kid. First, you ruin my century-long bond with my disciple with just one sentence. Now you've not only broken my seal but also become a hero of Yellow Spring Village."
Li Xiaonan furrowed his brow; how could he not detect the displeasure in the Demon Emperor's words?
He then smiled and replied, "First of all, everything has its cause and effect. How could a century-long master-disciple relationship be ruined by my words? If that were true, I could say a few more things to help you reconcile. Secondly, as for Yellow Spring Village, I risked my life to save it. To put it nicely, it was for the Underworld; to be blunt, wasn't it also for you? What benefit do I gain from this?"
The Demon Emperor looked at Li Xiaonan with a smile. The boy's words were both offensive and defensive, leaving himself plenty of room to maneuver. He chuckled, "So should I thank you then?"
Before Li Xiaonan could respond, Lu Nishang on the ground crossed her arms and huffed, "Of course you should thank him!"
At that moment, her ghostly energy had not yet recovered, so she couldn't fly or raise her voice too loudly. Fortunately, both men in the air were cultivators and could hear her clearly.
The Demon Emperor glanced at Lu Nishang, his silver pupils suddenly constricting as he glared at Li Xiaonan. "How could she be out of Spiritual Energy!"
Li Xiaonan felt a vein throb on his forehead, thinking, Why does this girl always interrupt at the wrong moments? She's really making things worse!
With a helpless sigh, he said, "Demon Emperor, this isn't the place for a detailed discussion. How about we head down first?"
The Demon Emperor nodded slightly, and the two flew down to the ground. However, the ensuing events only made the Demon Emperor feel more frustrated.
Lu Nishang smiled and called out, "Brother Xiaonan!" before leaping directly into his arms. Facing her master, she simply huffed through her delicate nostrils and turned away, ignoring the Demon Emperor.
The Demon Emperor could only glare daggers at Li Xiaonan; there was nothing else he could do. He realized that if he laid a hand on Li Xiaonan again, it would truly mark the end of his relationship with Lu Nishang.
A group of Ghostly Crowd members were so shocked by the appearance of the Demon Emperor that they forgot to bow. The bolder ones pretended not to see or recognize him and squeezed toward Li Xiaonan, eager to get close to the great hero, even if just to catch a glimpse of him.
Though the Demon Emperor felt furious inside, he couldn't stoop to the level of ordinary people and could only continue to glare at Li Xiaonan.
Li Xiaonan chuckled lightly and, right in front of the Demon Emperor, picked up Lu Nishang. "Let's help everyone rebuild their homes together, shall we?"
Lu Nishang buried her head in Li Xiaonan's shoulder with a smile and sweetly said, "Brother Xiaonan is the best!"
"Thank you, great hero! Thank you!" The Ghostly Crowd bowed repeatedly as Li Xiaonan waved his hand dismissively. "You're welcome."
The Demon Emperor followed behind Li Xiaonan slowly, sneering, "Is this what you call a detailed discussion?"
Li Xiaonan felt a chill run down his spine as the Demon Emperor's gaze seemed to pierce through him.
Indeed, Li Xiaonan was doing it on purpose; he knew that as long as Lu Nishang was by his side, the Demon Emperor wouldn't harm him—at least not openly.
Lu Nishang pouted and angrily turned to look at the Demon Emperor. The Demon Emperor felt as if he had choked on water or food; he had to swallow back his words and gaze filled with affection for Lu Nishang. Unfortunately, she completely ignored him and made a face before resting her head back on Li Xiaonan's shoulder.
Li Xiaonan let out a sigh of relief. Behind him, the Demon Emperor seemed petrified by Medusa's gaze, standing still and not following any longer.
"Feeling better?" Li Xiaonan asked with a smile.
Lu Nishang looked slightly puzzled but then nodded. "Yes, although I still don't have much strength, I'm feeling much better."
He shook his head with a smile and leaned closer to her ear, whispering, "Are you feeling better emotionally? Are you still mad at your master? I risked my life and everything to help you."
Lu Nishang's face flushed, and she shyly lowered her head. "Yes, I'm feeling better. Thank you, Brother Xiaonan."
"Fool, why thank me? If it weren't for you, I would be dead," Li Xiaonan said softly. Lu Nishang felt a wave of warmth wash over her, leaning weakly against him.
Li Xiaonan smiled again. "Lu Nishang, are you really going to ignore your master?"
Lu Nishang pouted slightly, her cheeks puffed up in anger. "It's his fault for deceiving me!"
A smile involuntarily crept onto Li Xiaonan's lips. The emotional rift between the Demon Emperor and Lu Nishang was something he had instigated, so he had to resolve it. Otherwise, there would be no way for him to safely take Mei Yingluo's soul out of the Underworld. Although he had the Boundary Stone and had regained his powers at that moment, he hadn't forgotten that the true owner of the Boundary Stone was the Demon Emperor, who had originally lent it to Tian Yu Dao Ren.
Now that he had found his mother, there was no reason to take risks. He looked at Lu Nishang and asked, "What do you think your father would do if he were alive?"
Lu Nishang tilted her head thoughtfully and replied after a moment, "He would love me dearly and spoil me, just like Brother Xiaonan does—so very well!"
Li Xiaonan felt his face heat up. At that moment, he thought of Lu Nishang as a little white rabbit and himself as a big gray wolf. His kindness towards the little white rabbit stemmed not only from her cuteness but also because behind her was a big black rabbit that could provide him with plenty of meat.
"Then how does your master treat you?"
Lu Nishang fiddled with her fingers, looking down as she softly said, "Very well..."
"I've always thought Lu Nishang is a very lucky girl. Even though you don't know who your parents are, you have a master who loves you dearly. Everyone has their own struggles; perhaps the Demon Emperor doesn't talk about your parents to protect you. In the past, when you didn't know, you were very happy. Now that you do know but aren't happy at all, see? Your master was right not to tell you," Li Xiaonan gently guided her thoughts.
Lu Nishang, though a ghost for five hundred years, had a delicate appearance that hinted at maturity, yet her small stature was only half a head taller than Li Dogdan, and her temperament was that of a child.
She lowered her head and fell silent, while Li Xiaonan did not press her. Instead, he began helping the villagers build houses.
Seeing that even heroes had come to assist them, the villagers quickly wiped away their tears and joined in the work, propping up the fallen beams. With a flick of his finger, Li Xiaonan saved them considerable effort.
In no time, a thatched house was completed.
Li Xiaonan frowned slightly; the house was too flimsy. If only there were steel and concrete—brick houses would be better than these straw huts.
He glanced at the sandy soil beneath him and took a deep breath. A ball of true fire appeared in his hand as he carefully analyzed the composition of the sand. To his surprise, he found a significant amount of metal content within it, and its hardness was quite decent.
He extinguished the true fire with a flick of his wrist and began to sift through the sand with three fingers. Inner Thoughts: Steelmaking? The cost is too high! Ordinary villagers cannot manage this without the help of Ghost Soldiers or Demon Generals.
He squinted as the Demon Emperor returned to his senses and caught up with him.
Eureka! Shaping bricks! He thought to himself as he gathered some materials to create brick blanks. However, another problem arose—there was no water! How could he mix it into mud?
Li Xiaonan approached a villager for information and learned that water resources in the Underworld were extremely scarce; they could only collect rainwater for drinking.
He frowned; although somewhat disheartened, he did not give up immediately. He believed there was always a way out. Once again, he meticulously analyzed the sand and couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief as a smile returned to his face.
Lu Nishang watched Li Xiaonan curiously as he played with mud one moment, frowned the next, then broke into silly laughter. Although she didn’t understand what Li Xiaonan was doing, she believed her Brother Xiaonan must have come up with an interesting new idea.
Meanwhile, the Demon Emperor silently observed everything unfolding.
With one hand flipping through motions, Li Xiaonan formed several hand seals. In an instant, a yellow brick landed in his palm. He exhaled deeply, Inner Thoughts: It worked! Fortunately, the high metal content allows it to melt under high temperatures. Now that I have bricks, what about cement?
He furrowed his brow again; surely he couldn't just stack blocks? The pyramid was marvelous but equally impossible to replicate.
Lu Nishang watched as Li Xiaonan stared blankly at a strange object in his hand. Curiosity got the better of her, and she reached over to take the brick from him. She pulled at it with all her might, and her face instantly flushed red. The Demon Emperor, unable to bear the sight, snatched the brick and effortlessly broke it in half, smiling as he handed it back to Lu Nishang.
Lu Nishang pouted angrily, "Bad Master, you broke Brother Xiaonan's thing!"
The Demon Emperor's lips twitched, and he chuckled awkwardly, "Well... I can fix it with swamp mud... Don't be angry, Lu Nishang."
"Hmph!"
Li Xiaonan suddenly snapped back to reality and asked, "What is swamp mud? Is it common in the Underworld?"
Lu Nishang shrugged and replied, "Brother Xiaonan, don’t be mad. Master didn’t mean to break it. Swamp mud is just the water from the Ghost Pool. There’s plenty of it; you can never run out. It's dark and very sticky."
Li Xiaonan nodded silently. He had seen the Ghost Pool before—black stagnant water bubbling ominously. He then asked, "Is there a Ghost Pool nearby?"
"It seems there isn’t... but Master can create one! Bad Master, hurry up and make one, and I’ll let Brother Xiaonan forgive you!"
The Demon Emperor awkwardly rubbed his chin. With a wave of his left hand, a Ghost Pool with a diameter of five meters suddenly appeared before Li Xiaonan, startling the villagers around them.
Lu Nishang shook her legs playfully. Li Xiaonan released her as she hopped over to the edge of the Ghost Pool. Holding one of the broken bricks, she dipped it into the swamp mud. With a clap of her hands, the two pieces merged into one.
Li Xiaonan's eyes lit up as he snatched it for a closer look. The pieces were seamlessly glued together; once the black swamp mud dried, not a trace was left behind.
He exclaimed excitedly, "A pyramid... I’m going to build a pyramid!"
