“Xiao Nan…” Mei Yingluo stood there in a daze, allowing Li Xiaonan to pull her along, her gaze fixed on the tall figure of her son. A swirl of emotions clouded her heart, and mist filled her eyes.
Li Xiaonan's face was dark as he carved a bloody path with sheer determination, his legs moving with purpose.
The Wang family's Ghost Servants were not to be underestimated. Seeing their lady in danger, they rushed forward to block the way. However, despite their attacks landing on Li Xiaonan, he remained unfazed, his expression as cold as ice. With a single counterattack, the Ghost Servants were sent flying. Without their protective energy, Li Xiaonan felt pain, but it was overshadowed by the anguish in his heart.
Chen Yaojin watched with excitement bubbling inside him and muttered to himself, “Wow! The boss is incredible! I’m joining in!” He charged into the fray wielding his axe.
Li Xiaonan glanced back and commanded, “Retreat!”
“Boss, you go ahead! I’ll hold them off!” Chen Yaojin was caught up in the fight, swinging his axe with fervor.
Li Xiaonan nodded and pulled Mei Yingluo along, dodging the Ghost Servants as they made their way out of Sunset City through the west gate. Once they reached the outskirts, Li Xiaonan finally stopped. The chill in the air could not compare to the expression on his face.
He released her hand and slowly turned to face Mei Yingluo’s tear-filled eyes. His throat tightened, but he couldn’t find the words to speak.
Mei Yingluo reached out a trembling hand toward Li Xiaonan. He tried to pull away but ultimately couldn’t bring himself to do it.
When her cold hand touched his warm cheek, tears finally fell from Mei Yingluo’s eyes.
“Xiao Nan, how could you…”
“Mother, I’m not dead, and neither are you. Come with me; I’ll take you back to the Cultivation world.” Just as Li Xiaonan reached for Mei Yingluo’s hand, she pulled away.
Mei Yingluo turned her face aside and sighed. “We can’t go back… Your father and brother are gone… How can I return…”
Li Xiaonan cupped Mei Yingluo’s face, urging her to look at him. “Mother, we can go back! You still have me! And Grandpa! Oh! And three daughters-in-law and grandchildren! Mother, look at me; my illness is gone! We can…”
Mei Yingluo smiled gently. Her son had grown up; he was healthy now and even had wives and children. As for that stubborn old father of his—perhaps he would forgive her now. What more could she possibly regret in this life?
Li Xiaonan gazed at the woman before him who wore a tender smile, feeling an inexplicable ache in his heart.
"Mother..."
"Child, you must leave quickly. Wang Yong's Ghost Soldiers are almost here..." Mei Yingluo lowered her head helplessly.
Li Xiaonan could guess that the man with the surname Wang was that lecherous old ghost who wanted to take advantage of a beautiful woman.
"Why? Mother, do you no longer think of Father? Why do you want to remarry?"
Li Xiaonan's words struck a chord in Mei Yingluo's heart. Just as she was about to respond, a dark mass surged at the city gate. Leading the group was a Male Ghost dressed in a red robe, adorned with a large red flower on his chest. The patterns on his clothing were clearly similar to those of Mei Yingluo; this ghost was none other than Demon General Wang Yong.
"Yingluo!" the Male Ghost called out with a frown, his voice icy and filled with rage as he glared at Li Xiaonan.
Li Xiaonan instinctively moved to shield Mei Yingluo, but she instead stood in front of him. His heart warmed; he understood that his mother must have her reasons for remarrying. He resolved to bring Mei Yingluo back no matter what, even if it meant binding her.
"General Wang, he is my son, here to find me. I apologize for any offense," Mei Yingluo said lightly, giving a slight bow.
Her demeanor was neither servile nor arrogant, which pleased Wang Yong. He chuckled, "I see, your son is my son too. Come, let us go and get married!"
Li Xiaonan raised an eyebrow and scoffed, "You can’t be my father; my mother will not marry you!"
"You!" Wang Yong seethed with anger. If it weren't for Mei Yingluo standing in front of Li Xiaonan, he would have already dealt with the boy.
Mei Yingluo glanced at Li Xiaonan and sighed deeply. "General Wang, Yingluo's life was saved by you from the demon clan. I will not go back on my word; I will go with you. However, my son... he is used to being alone. I hope you won't make things difficult for him."
Li Xiaonan stood quietly behind his mother, absorbing every word. With a bit of analysis, he deduced the reason behind her decision to remarry.
On that day, the Li Family Fortress was annihilated, and everyone died with resentment in their hearts. Their souls were reborn through the Ghost Pool. The Ghost Messenger saw that these ghosts were all souls of cultivators and sent them to serve as slaves in Wang Yong's household.
Along the way, they encountered demons—winged creatures that were the weakest two-winged demons—but they were still no match for the ghosts of the Li Family Fortress.
The first to fall victim was Li Rongluo; after all, he was the plumpest among them.
Instantly, there were cries of despair as Li Father met a tragic end while trying to protect Li Mother, resulting in their souls scattering into oblivion.
As Mei Yingluo faced imminent death at the hands of the demons, Wang Yong descended like a deity, slaying the monsters with ease.
A month had passed, and Wang Yong had taken great care of Mei Yingluo, even proposing to her three days ago. With no ties left and her heart already dead, she accepted his proposal out of gratitude for saving her life. Little did she know that she would soon see her beloved son, Li Xiaonan.
Li Xiaonan stepped in front of Mei Yingluo, blocking Wang Yong's intense gaze. "Mother, I have just one question for you: do you love him enough to marry him?" He slightly turned his body, pointing at Wang Yong hovering in the air.
He spoke loudly on purpose, ensuring that the Demon General could hear him.
Mei Yingluo lowered her head, a bitter smile forming on her lips as she replied, "To repay a debt."
Li Xiaonan grinned widely. "I knew it! Mother only has father in her heart. Then we won't marry."
Wang Yong's face darkened as he descended to the ground with his Ghost Soldiers, exuding a menacing aura.
Li Xiaonan calmly approached Wang Yong. Mei Yingluo wanted to intervene, but Li Xiaonan flashed her a confident smile. She hesitated for a moment but felt reassured; her once inept son had grown up.
"Mother's debt will be repaid by her son. I can give you wealth and power, but my mother will never marry you!" Li Xiaonan declared coldly. He wasn't being arrogant; he truly had the capability. Once he regained his strength, the mountain of spirit stones in his Soul Ring would make Wang Yong immensely wealthy—who needed power when one had money?
Wang Yong sheathed his war spear and sneered, "Is your mother's life worth only that?"
"Perhaps. What do you want then?" Li Xiaonan replied with a smile.
He had guessed Wang Yong's intentions; escaping unscathed was impossible now. Even if it cost him dearly, he would bring his mother's soul back!
"I want your life! Take three of my strikes!"
"Fine!" Li Xiaonan flicked his sleeves and steadied himself in a horse stance, wearing a calm smile.
"Xiao Nan!" Mei Yingluo cried out in an attempt to stop him, but it was too late.
"Come on! This is going to be epic! The boss is incredible; I'm sticking with him!" Chen Yaojin arrived at the city gate just in time to witness the touching scene of Li Xiaonan willingly taking three strikes to save his mother.
Wang Yong struck towards Li Xiaonan's chest. He staggered back two steps, tasting a hint of blood's sweetness in his throat. He swallowed hard and steadied himself for the second strike.
Striking the child hurts the mother’s heart. Mei Yingluo began to regret why she had agreed to this marriage. If Li Xiaonan were to suffer any misfortune, she would not want to live either.
“Hmph! Second strike!” Wang Yong gathered his energy in his Dantian and struck Li Xiaonan's chest with all his might.
A mouthful of bright red blood spurted from Li Xiaonan's lips. He felt a searing pain in his chest. His agreement with Wang Yong was not entirely impulsive; he was taking a gamble, and he had gambled correctly.
With each strike, a trace of True Essence Power flowed out from his Dantian. So at this moment, although he looked somewhat disheveled, he had not sustained severe internal injuries. Thinking of the imminent reunion with his mother in the Cultivation world, a smile involuntarily appeared on his face.
The onlookers had different thoughts in their hearts.
Chen Yaojin was utterly impressed; his boss was incredible. How could he still smile at a time like this? When would he ever have such carefree spirit?
Wang Yong squinted, his Inner Thoughts raging: How dare you mock me!
Before Li Xiaonan could stand up, he intended to deliver a third strike.
Mei Yingluo, believing her son was gravely injured, rushed forward with a pained smile and cried out, “No! I will marry you!”
Tears filled her eyes, making her look pitiful. Wang Yong slowly withdrew his energy and sighed at the nonexistent burden...
Li Xiaonan thought to himself: This is bad! Just when things were about to succeed, my mother suddenly rushes over. What should I do now?
He exchanged glances with the stunned Chen Yaojin, who was clever enough to nod and pull Mei Yingluo to his side.
Li Xiaonan forced himself to stand up, spat out a mouthful of blood-tinged saliva, and shouted at Wang Yong, whose attention was fully on Mei Yingluo: “If you don’t strike again, you’re a worthless coward!”
Wang Yong clenched his fists; the anger he had just suppressed flared up again because of Li Xiaonan's words. “Fine! If you want to die, I’ll grant your wish!”
“Wait! Stop!”
The crowd gasped as Lu Nishang, the Demon Emperor’s most beloved disciple, arrived. She remained shrouded in shadows, her voice aged and resonant.
Wang Yong's eyes turned red; he couldn’t understand why so many spirits were protecting this brat.
There was one person who felt even more frustrated, and that person was Li Xiaonan. He was so close to bringing his mother back, but this little girl had to come and cause trouble!
"I want General Wang, including his mother. That agreement of three strikes is canceled."
It turned out that when Li Xiaonan was thrown out by the Demon Emperor, Lu Nishang had also run away from home. She had been quietly following Li Xiaonan out of curiosity until she saw him "seriously injured," at which point she couldn't help but step forward.
"Fine! I won't deliver the last strike!" Wang Yong coldly stared at Li Xiaonan.
A shadow seemed to bounce over to Li Xiaonan, "Did you find your mother? Is this your mother?" As she spoke, she floated over to Mei Yingluo, "So beautiful."
Li Xiaonan furrowed his brow, unsure whether to feel happy or sad. Lu Nishang's appearance spared him from the third strike, but on the other hand, it meant he had taken the first two strikes for nothing.
Everyone in Li Xiaonan's group relaxed due to Lu Nishang's sudden appearance. A faint smile appeared at the corner of Wang Yong's mouth as he once again wielded his battle spear. He suddenly declared, "The final strike will be a thrust!" He simply couldn't swallow his anger.
From the moment he first laid eyes on Mei Yingluo, he had fallen deeply in love with her. He had carefully protected her until all the ghosts around her were killed by the demon clan. Only then did he heroically save her. When Mei Yingluo accepted his proposal, he was overjoyed to the point of madness. But now, all that beauty had turned into a mirage, all because of this suddenly appearing brat who wanted him to let it go—something he could not do!
What did it matter if he offended Lu Nishang? He had a good relationship with the Demon Emperor as well. The demon clan was invading the Underworld; would the Demon Emperor really kill him over a brat? So he made his move.
Li Xiaonan looked at the battle spear that pierced through his chest in shock. Damn it! I’ve been set up! He fell straight to the ground, raising a cloud of dust.
"Xiao Nan!" The three ghosts exclaimed in surprise.
