As Sister Hong's words fell, some people nodded in agreement and began to express their opinions.
"Boss Hong is right!"
"We think the same way!"
...
The discussion gradually split into two opposing sides. A few individuals, led by Huo Changqing, Cui Mingjiu, and Zhao Huairen, cast unfriendly glances at Sister Hong. Uncle Ming sensed the tension and quickly intervened, "Ladies and gentlemen, I believe we should prioritize harmony and work together to come up with a reasonable plan. Moreover, our boss does not mean to prevent anyone from making money; she just hopes that we won't focus solely on immediate profits but also consider long-term benefits for the sustainable and healthy development of the entire industry..."
A young man in his thirties, sitting next to Cui Mingjiu, sneered at Uncle Ming, "Who do you think you are? This is a discussion for the bosses; what right do you have as an employee to interrupt?"
Uncle Ming's face turned red with anger as he stood there, stunned. He never expected these people to be so arrogant. I stepped forward, "Our boss hasn't said a word, so why are you, an outsider, making noise? We listen to our boss; who are you to speak up? You're just like a donkey sticking its head into a horse trough!"
The young man stood up and pointed at my nose, "You..."
I cut him off, "What about me? I'm an employee too; I'm speaking up now—what are you going to do about it?"
Seeing that he couldn't find words to retort, I shifted my focus to Huo Changqing and his group. "Who are you to decide the execution price for the entire funeral industry in Jiangcheng? Are you from the Civil Affairs Bureau or the Market Supervision Administration? Why should other bosses listen to you? Are you part of some underworld organization? Don't hide behind the banner of unified pricing while bullying others! Besides, money can be made, but hearts must remain pure; otherwise, the souls of those you've sent off won't find peace!"
Everyone in the industry knew that Sister Hong had a hand in the downfall of Heavenly Family and had heard rumors that she kept a "muscle" who once beat up all the security guards at Heavenly Abode. Though these were just rumors, sometimes baseless tales could be more misleading than visible connections. My boldness left everyone momentarily speechless.
A few people in the corner stood up; one man with a slightly hunched back but a serious expression said, "Boss Huo, it seems we won't reach a conclusion today. Everyone is quite busy; perhaps we should call it a day and find another time to discuss this."
Just like that, I disrupted what was supposed to be a research discussion meeting before it even concluded.
The three of us headed downstairs where several dubious characters loitered ominously around Sister Hong's BMW Mini. Sister Hong hesitated slightly while Uncle Ming's expression changed. I disdainfully kicked out a brick hidden under the wheel and crushed it underfoot.
The group exchanged glances before pretending nothing was amiss and walked away. Just then, a police car with flashing red and blue lights pulled up beside me. Thinking it was Old An, I looked up only to see a beautiful woman’s face: "Lin Xiaoguo? What are you doing here?"
It turned out to be Lu Wei. I pointed at the sign of Huo Changqing: "Our industry leader has called for a meeting. I came here with my boss and the store manager."
Lu Wei looked up at the large sign of Evergreen Funeral Company. "You guys are playing some strange games. What kind of alliance can you have in a place that deals with the dead?"
Then she said to me, "Your little girlfriend has started school, and no one is watching over you anymore. You can't just go wild."
This crazy woman was really like a Pacific police officer, and I felt a bit annoyed. I pulled a long face and retorted, "Do you think someone from Ms. Jiang's background would date someone like me, who deals with the dead? How can you, as a police officer, spread rumors like this?"
Hearing me call her 'auntie,' Lu Wei seemed a bit irritated and deliberately mocked me: "Exactly, you're just a little loser. I don't think you're worthy of my Sister Qiu Ying."
Fuming, I got into the car and told the bewildered Sister Liu and Uncle Ming, "Let's go, ignore her."
As our car drove away, Lu Wei laughed heartily behind us without any sense of decorum.
I was truly afraid of her.
