On the cold night of February 22, 1999, Captain Li, the security chief of the Lai Yinda Building, began his routine patrol as usual. His flashlight cast a faint beam of light down the empty corridors, and the sound of his footsteps echoed in the silence of the building. A veteran, Captain Li approached his job with meticulous care, never allowing himself to slack off.
As he rounded a corner of the building, a strong stench suddenly assaulted him—a foul odor that mingled the scent of rotting flesh with something fishy, sending chills down his spine. Captain Li frowned; his instincts told him this was no ordinary smell. He began to search layer by layer until he arrived at a women’s restroom under renovation, where the stench intensified.
He pushed open the restroom door. The light was dim, with only a few flickering bulbs swaying overhead. Captain Li shone his flashlight around until it landed on a woven bag beneath the sink. The bag seemed out of place, and he wondered if someone had forgotten something valuable there.
A surge of excitement coursed through him as he cautiously approached the bag. As he drew nearer, the foul smell nearly overwhelmed him. But curiosity compelled him to continue. He held his breath and reached for the bag's opening when suddenly, a round object rolled out and fell heavily to the floor.
Captain Li's heart nearly stopped at that moment. Rubbing his eyes for clarity, he focused on what lay before him—a bloody human head with hollow, lifeless eyes. Unable to contain himself any longer, he screamed and stumbled out of the restroom, dialing emergency services with trembling hands.
The police responded swiftly; Detective Sun Feng from the Criminal Investigation Unit arrived on scene with his team. An experienced detective, Sun Feng was shocked by what he saw. The snake-skin bag contained not just any remains but an entire collection of bloody body parts—thirty pieces in total—brutally severed by a skilled hand.
Forensic analysis revealed that these body parts belonged to a single female victim, dismembered into thirty-seven pieces with unnaturally clean cuts. Even more chilling was that the flesh from the inner thighs was missing, as if it had been meticulously sliced like salmon fillets.
Sun Feng realized this was no ordinary murder case; the killer's brutality and composure placed unprecedented pressure on him. He began investigating but soon found that leads were scarce. No fingerprints or footprints were left at the scene, and surveillance cameras had been deliberately damaged, presenting Sun Feng with an extraordinary challenge.
Meanwhile, police received reports from family members of missing persons claiming their daughter, Zhang Li, had been missing for three days. After identification by her family, it was confirmed that the victim was indeed Zhang Li, an accountant at Lai Yinda Building. The cause of death appeared to be ligature marks around her neck, and traces of male bodily fluids were found on some body parts.
Initially considering revenge as a motive, Sun Feng conducted thorough inquiries with Zhang Li's family and colleagues. They described her as having very few relationships and being kind-hearted without any known enemies. Thus, while revenge was a possibility, it seemed highly unlikely.
What about a crime of passion? Zhang Li was not in a relationship; thus that possibility was also ruled out. Sun Feng meticulously reviewed building surveillance footage but discovered it had been tampered with. He noted an unusual detail: a skybridge leading to an adjacent building on the right side of Lai Yinda Building.
Just as Sun Feng felt stuck in his investigation, he realized that the killer had overlooked a crucial detail—one that could be key to solving the case. With sharp eyes like an eagle's, he began searching around the crime scene for potentially overlooked clues. Sun Feng knew this race against time had only just begun, and he needed to find answers quickly.
Without surveillance, Sun Feng found himself at a loss. Soon, he realized that the killer had overlooked a crucial detail.
