"Princess, why didn't you tell Consort about your illness?" Xiao Ling asked, puzzled.
"He doesn't want to know," I replied calmly.
"But from the way Consort looks, he seems to genuinely regret it," Xiao Ling said.
"And what of his regret?" I scoffed. "I have no use for his cheap guilt."
I knew that Huang Yu must have learned about my condition from Xiao Ling.
Huang Yu had waited outside my manor for several days before finally giving in and coming inside.
Once Huang Yu confirmed my illness, he insisted on staying at Princess Manor.
He didn't know how to take care of someone; instead, he busied himself with the tedious affairs of the manor and tried to learn how to cook.
I couldn't stop him.
I watched as his hands got burned and his face splattered with oil. The meals he prepared were unappetizing, yet he still insisted that I eat them.
Looking at Huang Yu filled me with mixed emotions.
I still couldn't bring myself to forgive him.
My condition worsened, and the pain became more frequent.
Each time the pain struck, I could only curl up helplessly, gritting my teeth tightly. I held on through memories of my mother and a sense of duty.
But this time, I could no longer endure it.
I coughed up a lot of blood, and my body suddenly felt much weaker.
Huang Yu walked into my chamber holding a bowl of chicken soup, intending to feed me.
Upon seeing my disheveled state, he dropped the soup on the floor.
With a loud crash, the bowl shattered, accompanied by my scream.
"Get out," I shouted at Huang Yu with all the strength I could muster.
"Yun'er," Huang Yu rushed over in panic.
"No... don't... come closer." My body trembled with pain as I pointed towards the door, signaling for Huang Yu to leave.
"Yun'er," Huang Yu looked at me with anguish.
My body continued to convulse, and I felt life slipping away rapidly.
"Princess." Xiao Ling hurried over, helping to cover me with a silk quilt. She turned to Huang Yu and said, "Consort, you should step outside. I can take care of her."
"Yun'er, I..." Huang Yu wanted to stay.
"Consort, your presence will only make the princess more uncomfortable," Xiao Ling advised.
"Alright." Huang Yu gave me one last deep look before reluctantly leaving.
As I watched Huang Yu exit, I finally let out a sigh of relief; my tense body began to relax.
"Thank you," I expressed my gratitude to Xiao Ling.
In the past few days, I had been writing letters to Mother.
Seeing her reply brought me great joy.
In her letter, she told me that she was doing well.
Although I was not feeling my best, I made an effort to maintain an optimistic tone in my letter, not wanting to worry her.
"Nian Nian, I received your letter. Mother is well, so you need not worry. But you, have you been eating properly? When you came to see me a few days ago, I felt you had lost quite a bit of weight... Yun'er, Mother knows you are not happy..."
"Mother, I'm fine, really happy... You don't need to worry. Please take good care of yourself; if you lose weight, it will hurt my heart..."
After finishing the letter, I looked up and saw Huang Yu crying.
I couldn't help but chuckle at Huang Yu, "Why are you crying?"
"Nothing," Huang Yu wiped away her tears.
"I want to go up the mountain to watch the sunrise," I suddenly said as I gazed out the window.
"Okay," Huang Yu agreed without hesitation.
"Right now," I added.
"Right now?" Huang Yu hesitated a bit. Seeing my pale face, she said with concern, "You’re too tired; you should rest."
"I want to see the sunrise," I insisted.
"Well..." Huang Yu hesitated for a moment but ultimately agreed, "Alright."
Huang Yu helped me into the carriage, and we traveled in silence.
When we reached the foot of the mountain, Huang Yu carried me up the slope.
I leaned against Huang Yu's back and slightly turned my head to look at his face.
"Huang Yu..." I suddenly called out.
"Mm?" Huang Yu responded, puzzled.
"Call me Yun'er," I said.
"Yun'er," Huang Yu gently repeated.
I smiled and remained silent, quietly listening to the sound of Huang Yu's heartbeat, feeling an inexplicable sense of reassurance.
"Huang Yu, stop for a moment," I tapped his shoulder to signal him to halt.
"What's wrong? Yun'er," Huang Yu asked.
"Let me down," I replied.
"Alright." Huang Yu carefully set me down.
I walked in front of Huang Yu and motioned for him to sit down.
"What do you want to do, Yun'er?" Huang Yu looked at me with curiosity.
"Nothing much," I smiled lightly. "I just wanted to see you."
"You," Huang Yu chuckled indulgently.
"Huang Yu, what would you do if one day I'm no longer here?" I asked.
"Yun'er, why are you suddenly asking this?" Huang Yu looked at me in confusion.
"Do you miss me?" I gazed intently at Huang Yu, eager to hear the answer.
"Of course I do." Huang Yu patted my head. "Why do you suddenly ask?"
"It's nothing." I shook my head.
I slowly stood up and walked toward the edge of the cliff.
"Yun'er, be careful!" Huang Yu called out nervously.
"I'm fine." I smiled as I pulled a jade pendant from my pocket and deliberately threw it down to the bottom of the cliff.
"Yun'er, what are you doing!" Huang Yu stood up in a panic, trying to grab me.
"Huang Yu, this is a lesson for you," I turned around and looked at Huang Yu. "One you'll never forget."
"Yun'er," Huang Yu said, his expression tense.
"Huang Yu, if you find a flower that satisfies me, I'll forgive you," I suddenly said.
"Really?" Huang Yu looked at me excitedly.
"Yes." I smiled gently. "Let's have a competition; whoever finds it first wins."
"Okay." Huang Yu eagerly began searching for flowers on the mountain.
Seeing Huang Yu's serious demeanor made me smile.
Huang Yu, this is my final lesson for you.
I pulled out the knife hidden on my person and without hesitation, I cut open my wrist.
Blood flowed down from the wound.
I felt a wave of relief, a sense of joy.
"Huang Yu," I whispered.
"Yun'er, look! I've found the most beautiful flowers!" Huang Yu exclaimed as he rushed towards me. Upon seeing the blood on my hand, his expression turned to one of sheer terror. "Yun'er, what happened to you?"
"Huang Yu, I found it," I said weakly, smiling. "I found the perfect flowers..."
"Yun'er." Huang Yu hurriedly picked me up and ran down the mountain.
"Yun'er, please don't scare me." Huang Yu was frantic, repeatedly calling my name.
"Huang Yu, I love you..." I slowly opened my eyes and looked at Huang Yu. "I will never forgive you..."
The sunlight hid behind the clouds, and I could not see the light.
I desperately tried to remember what color light used to be.
