I let out a cold laugh. "Because she's afraid you won't give her any money."
"You're so easily deceived by such self-deception."
"Impossible!"
"She wouldn't do that to me!" My partner shouted like a madman.
"On our wedding anniversary, she was right downstairs."
"She watched us walk into the restaurant together, tears in her eyes."
"I called her, and she said she loved me."
"I refuse to believe she's lying to me!" my partner said frantically.
"Then call her now."
"Ask her if she loves you," I said coldly.
My partner dialed the number and put it on speaker.
"Is there something you need?" Wang Nan's voice came through.
"I love you!"
"I wrote another poem recently; can I read it to you?"
"I'm busy," Bai Yueguang replied coldly.
"What's wrong?"
"You weren't like this before," my partner asked anxiously.
"Before?"
"You used to have money."
"And now?"
"You're as poor as a church mouse."
"I look down on you."
Bai Yueguang's words pierced through her partner's heart like a knife.
"How can you treat me like this?" her partner cried out.
"Get lost!" Bai Yueguang hung up the phone.
Her partner knelt on the ground, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Old woman, I was wrong."
"Will you forgive me?"
"I don't want anything to do with that woman anymore."
"I just want to be with you."
Her partner clutched at my pant leg, pleading incessantly.
I looked at her partner, filled with disgust.
"Forgive?"
"You expect me to forgive you now?"
"What were you doing back then?"
"When you were fooling around with Bai Yueguang, did you think of me?"
"You gave all your assets to her; did you think of me?"
"You treated me like a maid, summoning me at will; did you think of me?"
"And now you want me to forgive you."
"It's too late!"
"Someone like you makes me sick!"
"I will never forgive you!"
I calmly looked at my partner, my eyes betraying not a hint of emotion.
"Wrong is wrong."
"After all these years of marriage, I still underestimated your cruelty."
"There’s nothing more to say between us."
My partner's eyes were filled with tears.
"Is there really no chance for redemption?"
My gaze spoke volumes.
With no other choice, my partner turned to leave.
"Wait."
I called out to them.
"Go back and collect all the money you've given away over the years."
"That’s marital property."
"If you can’t get it back, I’ll sue you."
"And one more thing."
"Don’t ever show up in front of me again."
With a heavy heart, my partner walked away.
"Grandma, you were amazing!"
Xiao Hua couldn't help but clap.
"Of course!"
I smiled.
"From now on, let’s live our own lives well."
"As long as we’re doing well, that’s the greatest punishment for those disgusting people!"
"Yes!"
Xiao Hua nodded vigorously.
From that day on, I began to study diligently and was eventually hired as a professor in the Art Department of a school.
My partner tried to reach out several times.
Seeing my vibrant spirit, he couldn't help but compare it to his own disheveled appearance. Overwhelmed by self-doubt, he retreated to a corner and never returned.
It was said that his old partner fell ill later on. Having offended the family, no one took care of him. He lay in a hospital bed, covered in sores, barely clinging to life.
His son and daughter-in-law were also struggling. The children, having lost their mother, felt like weeds; they were busy with life, overwhelmed and exhausted.
As for me, my life seemed to be on an extraordinary path. Not only did I receive the title of Outstanding Teacher, but I also got the opportunity to study abroad.
"Grandma, you should go," Xiao Hua encouraged me. "The world outside is wonderful."
"Yes," I replied. "I've been trapped at home my whole life."
"I want to see the world too," I said, my eyes filled with hope.
Xiao Hua accompanied me to the airport.
Years later, Xiao Hua graduated with her doctorate. A senior student confessed his feelings for her, hoping to marry her and have her take care of the household chores.
I suggested that Xiao Hua turn the tables and ask him if he would be willing to be a stay-at-home husband while she worked to support him. He was taken aback and fell silent.
Xiao Hua smiled and walked away.
Later on, a silver-haired professor delivered a lecture with grace and elegance, radiating brilliance. She became the most important professor in the department. That person was me.
