"Alright, can you just find him and say it directly?" I interrupted her, cutting off her train of thought. She stared at me for a moment, looking a bit embarrassed, and said, "Actually, we haven't been in touch since graduation. I don't know if he changed his phone number." What the hell! Just admit you're just a student looking up to him, and stop rambling on. I could tell this girl probably wasn't that close to the professor.
As she spoke, she took out her phone from her pocket and pressed some buttons for a while until she found a number. She dialed it, and unsurprisingly, she held the phone to her ear for a long time before slowly lowering it with a bright smile, saying, "No one answered." I couldn't help but let out a laugh, unable to contain my emotions.
She immediately glared at me. "Don't laugh at me! If you’re so capable, why don’t you find the professor?"
I grinned. "What would happen if I found the professor?"
"If you find the professor, I'll be impressed."
"What do you want me to impress you for? How about this: if I can find the professor, you have to agree to one request of mine. Do you dare?" I chuckled, sizing her up with a teasing look in my eyes. It wasn't that I was being lewd; it was just rare to see a girl so assertive. She loved meddling and making decisions on her own; this time, I thought it would be good to teach her a lesson.
"Well..." She was momentarily speechless, her face turning red as she crossed her arms over her chest. Then she said, "That depends on what the request is. Are all soldiers like this... so... lewd?"
What the hell! "Hey, don’t get the wrong idea! I'm saying you agree to a legitimate request or do something that isn’t illegal or against the rules—it's like owing me a favor. Where did your mind go?" I almost felt my eyes pop out; why did pretty girls with good figures always think that way, afraid that other men would take advantage of them?
"Oh, like that." She uncrossed her arms shyly. "Alright then, I agree to see what you have." She was surprisingly straightforward.
I ignored her and pulled out my phone instead, finding Ah Huang's number. "Hey, Ah Huang, what are you up to? Busy?"
There was some noise on the line; it sounded like she was outside. "Oh, not much. Just shopping," came a girl's voice. "Whose call is this?" She sounded quite loud—wasn't that Xiao Mo Ya? I was actually trying to reach Ah Huang because I wanted to get in touch with Xiao Mo Ya but felt too shy to approach directly; my only option was through Xiao Mo Ya. After all, Xiao Mo Ya was close with Professor Zhang. The last time I met them, I noticed how fond Professor Zhang seemed of this student; I figured reaching out to her would be a sure bet.
Perfect timing—it was the weekend, and this couple was indeed together; fortune favored me.
"Oh, really? That's great! I'm also out and about; it's been a while since we gathered. How about I treat both of you to a meal?"
"Wow, brother! Is that really okay?" Ah Huang sounded slightly surprised.
"Are you okay? Where are you?"
Ah Huang reported the location. Thankfully, it wasn't far from where I was. I quickly replied, "Alright, I'll head over. You guys just wait for me."
Ah Huang didn't say much and hung up.
"Halfway there, let's go," I said excitedly to Long Xia after ending the call.
"Hey, why are you so happy about halfway?" she pouted and walked over, a fragrant breeze wafting towards me, causing me to instinctively take a couple of steps back.
"Oh, quite traditional," she teased as she looked at me.
"Cough, cough, let's hurry up," I quickly found an excuse, and we walked out of the campus one after the other. I hailed a taxi by the roadside and sat in the front seat. The ride was quiet, and soon we arrived at Ah Huang's shopping spot, Heiwa Hall. Honest had mentioned that he really disliked this place, but there was no choice now. I spotted a small restaurant in an alley next to the destination and immediately asked the driver to stop. I took Long Xia into the restaurant.
While ordering food, I dialed Ah Huang's number. It wasn't far away; before the dishes arrived, Ah Huang and Xiao Mo Ya had already come in.
They entered hand in hand. Seeing them made me chuckle a few times, causing Moya to shyly let go of her hand. After they settled down, Ah Huang looked at Long Xia and said, "Oh, you guys..."
Xiao Mo Ya also looked at Long Xia with curiosity, her eyes full of questions. I didn't know how to explain it, so I simply said, "It's still about that incident from last time when someone jumped off. Now the family is sticking to me." I stared directly at Ah Huang, who understood immediately. He laughed and said, "Well, there's nothing I can do. From my perspective, it can only be concluded as suicide. As for the reasons behind it, that's not something we should investigate."
He turned to look at Xiao Mo Ya, who appeared confused. He leaned over and whispered something in her ear; probably explaining the situation.
Once he finished speaking, Xiao Mo Ya exclaimed loudly, "Oh really? So what are you going to do?" Before she could finish her sentence, my phone rang, interrupting her words. I smiled apologetically without looking at my phone and answered casually while sitting there. "Hello? Who is this?"
"Brother Wang, where are you? Can you come out this weekend?" It was Xiaojing!
Three people were looking at me, and I couldn't just lie casually, so I said, "Ah, I'm outside, I'm with Ah Huang and the others."
"Brother Huang is also here," the voice on the other end suddenly became excited. "Are you guys investigating the case of the girl who jumped off? There's all sorts of rumors going around at school. I want to come over too."
"Wait, wait," the girl said. It turned out that being too clever wasn't a good thing. "We're discussing serious matters."
"I'm not going there to play; where are you?" she pressed on.
I looked at the three of them watching me. Honestly, I really couldn't manage to lie calmly, so I had to say, "We're eating near Heiwa Hall."
"Wait for me; I'll be there right away." Before I could say anything else, the call ended.
"Xiaojing."
"Your girlfriend," both Xiao Mo Ya and Long asked simultaneously. Ah, women are truly strange creatures; they can always pick up on things from your tone and expression, especially when it comes to gossip.
I simply didn't respond and directly told Ah Huang and Moya, "Hey, just so you know, there's a purpose behind this meal I'm treating you to today."
Ah Huang looked at me and said helplessly, "I can't help you with that. I told you this meal seems like it's going to be for nothing."
"Hehe, you're mistaken this time; I'm looking for Moya's help."
The moment those words left my mouth, everyone exchanged wide-eyed glances, especially Xiao Mo Ya. "What could I possibly do to help you?"
"Well, it's a long story." While waiting for the server to bring the food, I had no choice but to recount what happened at school once again.
"Then, we can only rely on you to take us to find Professor Zhang," I said, spreading my hands.
"I see. Wow, this is just unbelievable," Xiao Mo Ya seemed to be in a daze for a moment. "It's so strange, like something out of a story."
"You've worked with Professor Zhang before, right?" Xiao Mo Ya asked Long Xia, who nodded in response. "During my internship."
"Ah, what a small world," Xiao Mo Ya remarked.
"Alright, enough with the sentiments." Just as I was about to get to the point, my phone rang—it was Xiaojing.
I had to answer the call, and it turned out that Xiaojing was already nearby and was asking where we were eating. I briefly explained the location.
As soon as I hung up, I wanted to discuss the matter with Xiao Mo Ya, but the food arrived. I had no choice but to invite everyone to start eating; after all, Xiaojing would be here soon, so there was no need to wait.
Before I could take more than a few bites, Xiaojing rushed in. I quickly stood up and waved at her. She walked over with a bright smile and sat down right next to me.
"Brother Wang, who is she?" was Xiaojing's first question after taking her seat.
"Oh, she's Teacher Long from your school. We're here with Ah Huang to look into that matter together."
"What does she have to do with it? How do you know her?" Xiaojing began to pry, her tone slightly unfriendly.
"Hey, these kids nowadays don't focus on their studies and just wander around every day. I wonder how they explain that to their parents," Long Xia clearly overheard Xiaojing's question.
I pretended not to hear and busily called everyone, "Let's eat."
Ah Huang glanced at the two girls and then at me, silently picking up food to eat. Xiao Mo Ya, on the other hand, was quite sociable, chatting animatedly with the two girls. Perhaps due to their status, Xiaojing and Long Xia did not engage in direct conversation.
This meal felt like an eternity—no, it felt like every minute dragged on. As I noticed that the food was almost finished, I seized the opportunity while Xiao Mo Ya went to the restroom. I made an excuse to settle the bill and went to the front desk to pay. I stood by the restroom corridor waiting for Xiao Mo Ya.
"You have to help me this time."
"Depends on how difficult it is for you," Xiao Mo Ya replied with a meaningful smile. "Go ahead, what can I do?"
"I need you to set up a time for me to talk with Old Zhang. It doesn't need to be long—just an hour will do."
"Not a problem," Xiao Mo Ya said decisively. "Old Zhang has a habit of having morning tea; he usually has time around nine in the morning. Which day do you want to schedule it for?"
"The sooner, the better. We can't delay this." I felt quite anxious.
To be continued; the next part will be even more exciting.
