Once everyone had crossed the finish line, I instructed Murong to hand over the records to the Instructor, and then I led the team back to the Unit. Standing outside the Unit, I didn’t dismiss the troops; instead, I wore a stern expression and began my lecture.
“Do you know why I made you run? Does anyone here realize where they went wrong? What were you all doing while I wasn’t around? Do you still want to be part of my unit? Relaxing on your own time!? Who gave you permission to relax? Your physical fitness has dropped significantly! Do you still have the face to play around? I heard some of you even had the audacity to boast about being heroes of the Drill in front of comrades from other Units!? Pfft, with your current quality?”
Everyone lowered their heads in silence.
After my outburst, I shifted my tone. “Now listen up, my Unit’s quality determines everything! There’s a mission: we will train Normal University students in Military Training. Those who finish in the top fifty will prepare to join me at Normal University for Military Training!”
If it weren’t for my earlier tirade, everyone would have erupted in joy immediately. Even so, I could still see many eyes lighting up. Those who made it into the top fifty wore smiles, while those who didn’t showed clear signs of regret.
I also noticed a few Veterans puffing up with pride. Although they were panting heavily, their eyes couldn’t hide their arrogance and satisfaction. They must have thought they understood my mindset, believing that as long as tasks were completed, I wouldn’t fuss over minor issues. They thought they had struck gold this time, but today, they were mistaken.
“Instructor! Bring out the personal assessment records!” I commanded. “Quality also includes self-discipline and discipline! During this past week that I was away, anyone recorded for infractions will not be allowed to participate in Military Training! Those who are deducted will be replaced later! This applies to both officers and soldiers! If officers violate rules, they shouldn’t go either; this time, I’ll personally lead the team!”
The Veterans immediately looked dumbfounded. Old Tang’s management style was relatively lenient; without me around, he struggled to keep everyone in check. Now was the time to establish authority over Old Tang and let everyone know that discipline is a strict line—whether the Company Commander or Instructor is present should make no difference.
I believe this lesson will be deeply ingrained.
“Those selected will gather after dinner; I’ll set some rules for you!” I announced loudly. “Now disperse; let the Instructor verify who will participate in Military Training.”
Back at the Unit, for some reason, my mood improved significantly. It felt like I had found that sense of belonging again. Yes, this place is my home; it’s my world. Thinking about all those murders and drug-related incidents outside filled me with frustration; only back at the Unit did I feel at ease.
I decided not to concern myself with Liu Qi’s case anymore; as for those involved with drugs or trafficking, let Ah Huang and his team handle it! After all, I’m just a soldier. My duty is to fulfill my responsibilities.
I lay down on my bed and unexpectedly fell asleep. When I woke up, it was already dark outside. On the table was an insulated box; curious, I opened it to find a meal neatly packed inside, still warm.
Hmm? What is Sheng Xiong doing? I held a lunch box in my hand, eating as I walked out. Glancing at my watch, I exclaimed, "What the hell! It's already past six!"
Once outside the Company Headquarters, it was eerily quiet. Where did everyone go?
I turned around for a while but couldn't find a single person. Eventually, I managed to spot a new recruit washing dishes in the Unit mess hall. "Hey, Zhang Song, where did everyone go?" Zhang Song had a weaker physique and had been assigned to me for training by another battalion leader he had a good relationship with. It was a good thing he wanted to improve, so I accepted him. However, his foundation was indeed quite weak; he probably ranked around one hundred in the entire company. Eventually, I decided to let him work in the mess hall since the old squad leader there planned to retire by the end of the year and needed someone to take over. Surprisingly, you have to admit that sometimes fate plays its hand. While Zhang Song lacked military skills, he excelled at cooking! In less than a month in the mess hall, he produced soft and fluffy steamed buns that were delicious. Two months later, he was basically in charge of all the cooking, creating dishes that looked good and tasted great. Since the Company Commander didn't eat at the Battalion mess hall, he would call over the Communicator from our battalion to get meals from me. Sometimes when the family members of Vehicle One Squad Leader came by, they would also eat here, though he himself felt embarrassed to come.
Suddenly, Zhang Song stood up straight and reported, "Report, Company Commander! All squads went to the Playground for a five-kilometer physical training run."
Hey, these guys really needed a wake-up call; after a little nudge, they became much more aware of their responsibilities. "Alright, I got it."
“Company Commander,” Zhang Song hesitated as if he had something to say.
“What is it?” I guessed what was on his mind as I finished my last bite of food and set the lunch box down on the table.
“Report, Company Commander, I also want to go give military training to Local University Students.” Zhang Song looked at me with pleading eyes.
“You want to go too? Why? Give me a reason. Let me tell you, if it's just for broadening your horizons or wanting to interact with girls, then you won't pass my test. And who will cook if you leave?” Without thinking twice, I rejected him.
“No, no, no, Company Commander,” Zhang Song waved his hands anxiously. “I’m not thinking about those things! It’s just that... well, here’s the thing: I took the college entrance exam last year but didn’t get in. However, some of my classmates got into Normal University. I ended up joining the army instead. You know my physique isn’t great; they all laughed at me before I came here—saying I'm not good at academics or sports and that I'd just be wasting time in the military! Now that school has started again and they’re all in their second year, I just want to show them that I'm not inferior!”
“I see.” I stared at Zhang Song for a moment before suddenly laughing. “So you want to save face? That makes sense! Of course! My soldiers from Sharp Blade Company, even those working in the mess hall, are not something your classmates can compare with! I'll grant you special permission to go with us! But first off, as your Company Commander, I can’t interfere with your squad leader's normal duties. If you can get away from your squad leader in the mess hall, then you can go; if not, you’ll have to stay because there are still dozens of brothers here who need meals! Is that clear?!”
“Really?! Thank you, Company Commander!” Zhang Song jumped up joyfully. “Don’t worry; I guarantee my squad leader will let me go! It won’t affect our unit’s work.”
“Alright then, get back to washing dishes!” At that moment, I heard voices from outside; it seemed like everyone was returning.
"Yes, Company Commander, I'll wash the dishes first," Zhang Song said eagerly as he took the lunchbox to the sink.
I smiled and replied, "You should wash for everyone first! Thank you for adding more to my plate, but don't make exceptions. If you're not here at mealtime, unless it's due to Duty Assignment or illness, no leftovers are allowed!"
I patted Zhang Song on the shoulder and walked out of the mess hall. Just a few steps away, I noticed the lights on the sports field in front of the unit were on, and a group was lined up there.
I hurried over to find Xuanhua still giving a lecture.
"This mission is going to be tough! With the officers absent, we cannot let the Company Commander down! Everyone needs to remember this, got it?!"
The fifty selected soldiers widened their eyes at Xuanhua as I approached. I kicked his leg slightly, causing him to stumble.
"Who? Who kicked me?"
Upon realizing it was me, Xuanhua rushed back to the formation, shouting, "Company Commander, I'm just setting expectations for everyone!"
Ignoring him, I commanded, "Attention! At ease! Let's talk!"
Everyone stood at attention again. "At ease!"
I glanced at the fifty buddies before me; clearly, they were trying hard not to laugh, fearing they might be kicked off this mission if I caught them.
"Tonight when I gather you all together, it's for one thing: setting rules!" I cleared my throat.
"Let me be clear! Don't think that just because you're going to Military Training now everything is fine. I'm telling you, if any of you break the rules, I'll replace you immediately. There are plenty who want to go to Military Training!"
"Alright, I'm here. First: no hitting, scolding, or corporal punishment! University students are different from your recruits during Military Training! You need to pay attention to your methods! I know some of you have simple ways of leading your squads, but it's different with university students. You must be mindful of your attitude and behavior; we can't let people think our troops lack quality."
"Second: pay attention to your image! Always maintain a soldier's appearance! No casual clothes! No unkempt military attire! Be mindful of your formation when entering and exiting! Don't run around during breaks!"
"Third, and this is the most important point! No close contact with girls! Did everyone understand?!"
"Understood!" everyone shouted in unison.
I nodded in satisfaction, but then Xuanhua foolishly raised his hand and asked, "So what exactly should we do?"
What the hell! I was about to faint. It seemed I would have to write out the Military Training outline myself and distribute it.
After dismissing fifty people to go back and pack their bags, I quickly found a contact method and called to clarify the schedule and content requirements. I learned that aside from Mobilization for Training and Parade, which followed the school's specified content, everything else was up to me to arrange. The training would last three weeks, with shooting and grenade training in the final week, followed by an assessment. The location would be at our unit, and there would be vehicle support for the last Parade. My team would stay at the school for meals and lodging, with training scheduled from 8 AM to 1 PM and 2 PM to 6 PM, with Sundays off.
It sounded pretty good; it was a decent job! However, I never expected that this seemingly simple duty would lead to a bizarre situation that would cause a huge mess!
