"What is it?" I was still thinking about Liu Qi when I casually asked.
"Military Training!" the Company Commander raised his voice. "We need to provide military training for local university students!"
"Ah?" It suddenly dawned on me that it was September, and the local university had just started its semester. No wonder I hadn't seen Jing for a while; she was probably busy with orientation activities.
"What do you mean 'ah'? You don't understand, do you?"
"Are we really taking on this task?" I asked, bewildered.
"We didn't know before, but now we have to. Apparently, there's a leader at that local university who is a Political Commissar student, and they requested our regular troops to conduct military training for the local university students."
"I've never done that!" I recalled my own university days when we had military training, but it was quite simple—just standing in military posture, marching in formation, and it was incredibly dull.
"It's very simple," the Company Commander began to sound impatient. Perhaps he thought this was an easy task.
"Company Commander, why do we have to go?" I immediately asked.
The Company Commander gave me a meaningful look. "First, you've been out in the field too much lately, and some leaders are dissatisfied with you. You only know how to ride the wave of success and can't handle setbacks—this is a typical flaw of local university students. Second, because you're a graduate of the local university, you'll be responsible for organizing this military training. You need to gauge the situation properly and ensure that people don't think we're on the same level as them or that anything goes wrong."
"Go wrong? What could possibly go wrong?" I interrupted him.
"Well, you'll be living there for an extended period for military training, and since it's a Normal University with many girls around, if your group of monkeys goes there, what do you think will happen?" The Company Commander lowered his voice.
"I see!" I scratched my head; honestly, I hadn't thought that far ahead about his first and second points.
"And also, your unit seems to have become quite lazy recently. As the Commander, you need to reorganize things," the Company Commander said seriously.
"I know. I was just thinking about that." I glanced at the second floor, where a cacophony of noise was coming from. In the past, it would have been impossible for things to be like this; everything was orderly, and only during holidays would there be a slight relaxation.
"I just came from your Company Headquarters. I've already informed Tang; he will stay behind while you take people with you," the Company Commander added. "It's already the 8th, and it's just right to go for three weeks. On the 30th, after the School Leadership Parade, you will return, and the students will have their eleven-day holiday. They require fifty instructors to be sent over. I've left the contact information for the person in charge and related matters with Tang. After you finish reviewing it, choose your people; the unit will send a vehicle to take you over. We need to start soon; no delays are allowed!"
There was no room for negotiation in the Company Commander's words, so I stood at attention and replied, "Yes."
Watching the Company Commander’s retreating figure, I muttered to myself, "When can it be quiet again?"
Honestly, after what happened with Liu Qi, I wasn't too concerned about last time's disciplinary action. People must look forward; besides, I'm still young—there will be plenty of opportunities ahead. The setbacks I've faced should be seen as lessons.
Choosing fifty people? That requires some serious thought. I walked towards the Company Headquarters with my hands behind my back. As soon as I stepped inside, I saw Old Tang calling out, "Old Wang, you're back! Come on, there's a mission."
I responded, "Got it. Just ran into the Company Commander."
"Here, this is the notification." Old Tang handed me a sheet of fax paper.
I scanned it briefly and got a rough idea of what was going on.
Old Tang hesitated and said, "Recently, our Unit has been a bit lax. How can we pull people to lead Military Training? We should take non-commissioned officers; what about the new recruits? If we take them instead, they lack experience and might cause trouble if not managed properly. Now that you're back, you should think of a solution."
I chuckled coldly a few times. "I've indeed been slacking off lately; my mind hasn't been on managing the Unit. But these little rascals really know how to seize an opportunity—if I'm not watching them closely, they want to rebel. This mission is perfect; I’ll use it as an opportunity to straighten things out in the Unit!"
" Sheng Xiong, notify the duty Squad Leader to blow the whistle and grab my keys to open the gun cabinet! Full gear for Five Kilometers! Old Tang, you go to the end of Five Kilometers and supervise." Sheng Xiong dashed out of my room after responding and left quickly. Damn it! I knew he must have been sneaking around in my room playing with my laptop!
Old Tang readily agreed and grabbed his hat before heading out of the unit office.
I hurried to my room to change into my uniform. After grabbing my stopwatch, I stepped out of the Company Headquarters, and a buzzing noise hit me like a wave! It was chaotic! Where did all this chatter come from during assembly? I felt a surge of anger; back during the Military Exercise, everyone gathered in silence, just the sound of footsteps. Now it felt like a marketplace!
Sheng Xiong handed me the keys. I took them, suppressing my irritation, and stood on the steps, waiting for the duty Squad Leader to finish reporting.
"Attention everyone! At ease!" I scanned the formation; thankfully, they were still relatively orderly.
Taking a deep breath, I said warmly, "While I was away from the Unit, did everyone have fun?"
A cheer erupted from below; some people grinned widely while others whispered to each other.
Pretending not to notice, I continued, "Fun is good, but how long has it been since we ran Five Kilometers?"
Someone shouted from the crowd, "Company Commander! We all did!"
I chuckled, "All of you did it empty-handed, right?"
Laughter rippled through the ranks again.
"Alright, I'm back now. Let's put it to the test."
"No need for a test; we're well-prepared! We can outplay any other Unit," Xuanhua from Row A casually remarked, grinning widely.
"Hmph! Listen up! I was only gone for a few days! What happened to you all? This assembly feels like a shopping trip! Do you know what other Units are saying about you? Do you know how the leaders view us? Too much indulgence! Now listen carefully: Armed Cross-Country for ten kilometers! Run from here to the finish line and back! The last twenty will run an extra Five Kilometers after dinner!" I wasn't one to hold back my feelings; my anger finally erupted.
The crowd fell silent, stunned into complete stillness.
"Didn't you hear me? Now! Immediately! Get out to the starting point over there! If anyone hasn't run out in three minutes, run twenty kilometers for me! When I come back, I'll check the kettles one by one!" I roared. "A Row! Turn left! Run!" Squad Leader is much smarter than the duty Squad Leader. As soon as I finished speaking, he roared and A Row was taken away with a rumble. The Squad Leader on duty then realized and quickly gave the order to chase A Row. Several other soldiers hurriedly ran to the Water Room to fill the kettle with water. Damn it, you deserve it! Revolution relies on self-consciousness. Do you think I can't cure you if you throw the water away? How much can a jug of water weigh? Even this lazy person wants to steal it! ? Pooh! I spat hard on the ground. Only Sheng Xiong was left standing in place. I asked with a sullen face, "Why don't you go?" Sheng Xiong said with a shy face, "Hey, Company Commander, who will give you time and statistics when I go?" "I'll do it myself! You! Immediately! Immediately ! Get the gun and run!" I threw the key on him. Sheng Xiong I have never seen me so angry. I shuddered, lowered my head, and rushed up the stairs to get the gun. Seeing that everyone had started running not far away, I pressed the stopwatch. Just for a while, Unit was clean and quiet inside and outside, and no one was left. "If you don't eat the toast, you will be punished with a drink." I hummed, and slowly I came to the starting point. Let Old Tang go to the finish line, that is, let him count the number of people. There are always some people who think they are smart. They think Camp is big and tortuous, so they just find a place to hide halfway through and come back when the time is almost up. . So Old Tang and I came up with this idea, setting up a point in the middle. I was at the starting point, and he was at that point. He took a bunch of slips with pre-marked numbers, came over and took one one, and ran back after taking it. . These guys are just getting carried away. If they don't beat and beat like this, their arrogance will continue to increase. The carrot will be added to the stick, and they will be submissive in a short time. More than half an hour passed, and I yawned out of boredom. Coming from the corner coming from Second Battalion, a figure came out and stepped onto the straight road. "Who is it?" I squinted my eyes.
It was getting closer, and surprisingly, the first one was Murong Qian! What the hell! Even fully armed, he could still run so fast. For some reason, I suddenly thought of Forrest Gump. People really need to have a skill!
"First place, Forrest Gump! Oh no, no, it's Murong Qian!" I shouted while writing down the results as Murong crossed the finish line.
Murong walked back and forth to catch his breath. I went over and touched his water bottle. "Good job." He leaned on his knees and didn't say anything.
"Why was it impossible to carry things while running before, but now it is?"
After a while, Murong replied in a fragmented manner, "Last time, during the Drill, it really shook me up. I feel that a soldier may not grasp the overall situation of war, but should at least manage what he can control. This is the most basic quality a soldier should have. So I came back and practiced weighted running. Actually, running wasn't that hard; heh heh, just a bit tiring."
"Good for you! You've improved!" I happily patted him on the back. "Now rest up; once you're ready, help me keep track of the rankings!"
Just then, the second and third runners came in. The second was Nong, and the third was Xu—both new recruits. I found it a bit strange but then realized it wasn't surprising at all; new recruits are young and physically strong. If veterans let their guard down, they would fall behind quickly.
After that, more people started to arrive in clusters, often crossing the finish line together. Xuanhua fell to beyond twentieth place, while Jinghe did well in the thirties. Sheng Xiong was the most ridiculous, coming in at forty-seven, gasping like a bull after crossing the line. I shook my head at this sight and even thought about whether Clerk and Communicator should take turns on duty; these two were too relaxed. When they had nothing to do, they would play games, read newspapers, and boast. Over time, this could lead to their physical fitness and military skills lagging behind the main force.
In the end, about thirty out of the top fifty were veterans—this was expected—but what was even more frustrating was that all three Squad Leaders were outside of the top fifty! (Our Unit Deputy Company Commander ordered that those working in administration do not participate in regular Unit activities.)
(To be continued; tomorrow will be even more exciting!)
