Ah Huang glanced at my expression cautiously, and seeing that I had no reaction, he continued, "It's actually quite simple. I plan to send a letter to your unit under the name of the Criminal Investigation Team. The content will state that you acted bravely and helped solve a major criminal case, recommending that you be recognized for your contributions."
After finishing, Ah Huang looked at me, and I realized that he had learned the art of persuasion. In hindsight, my initial thoughts seemed somewhat naive; after all, the military and the police are two different systems. However, young people often don't think too much about such things. To be honest, I was somewhat tempted. I tend to be indifferent towards money but place great importance on reputation. My vanity and competitive spirit were strong, which later influenced my development in various ways.
Seeing me lost in thought, Ah Huang continued, "We still don't have any information on this person. From what we've gathered from the hospital's side, he came to the hospital as a temporary worker two years ago. The identification information he provided when he joined has been confirmed as false, so we have no way of knowing his real identity. This is also why our suspicion of him has deepened. Moreover, we need you to approach him to obtain a hair sample because you accompanied Lao Zhao to Professor Qin's Emergency Room last time and mentioned that you encountered him."
"That's right," I nodded.
"If that's the case, as a family member of a patient, when you run into him again, his guard should be down, making it easier to complete the task."
"So how do we go about obtaining the sample?" I couldn't help but ask.
"While pretending to run into him at the hospital, find a way to get close and collect a sample. How does that sound? Simple enough?"
"Well, sort of," I hesitated. "But why didn't you think of this when you searched his house?"
Ah Huang looked a bit awkward. "Honestly, we didn't anticipate this need at the time, and we were pressed for time; searching his home consumed quite a bit of it."
"Brother, help me out here; we're just one step away. Once we confirm the blood sample, we can formally arrest him, and this case will be practically resolved," Ah Huang said earnestly.
I looked at his face and thought about our friendship; my heart softened. I nodded in agreement.
Agreeing was easy; executing it was difficult. I shot Ah Huang an annoyed look. "I'm only helping you collect the sample; I'm not involved in planning anything. You handle it however you want so that if it fails, you won't blame me."
"Don't worry! We'll hold a meeting right away. Once everything is arranged, we'll let you know what to do. Just wait for your recognition!" Ah Huang said with a smile, clearly in high spirits now that I had agreed.
"I don't have high hopes!" I shrugged.
Ah Huang patted my shoulder, signaling me to wait in the office before stepping out for a meeting.
I idly looked around Ah Huang's office, and before I knew it, it was already past eleven. Just as my patience was about to run out, Ah Huang returned.
"What’s the plan?" I asked eagerly.
"Let’s go; it's time for lunch! We can talk while we eat," Ah Huang said as he entered the room.
"Are we eating at the cafeteria again?"
"Of course not. The emperor doesn’t starve his soldiers. I’ll treat you to a restaurant nearby," Ah Huang replied, taking off his jacket.
"At least you have a bit of conscience!" I couldn't help but remark.
"Haha, let’s go!"
Ah Huang and I exited the office building and walked a few dozen meters to a restaurant. Once inside, Ah Huang led me to a corner table and ordered several specialty dishes. We began to eat and chat.
Of course, I was mostly eating while Ah Huang was… well, he was briefing me.
"We’ve already issued an internal notice within the Public Security System to check if this Cleaner is a fugitive or has any prior convictions. This afternoon, we’ll take you to the hospital for sampling. We’ve already coordinated with the relevant departments and the hospital this morning; that person will be working in the afternoon. We’ll create an opportunity to attract his attention, and then you can quietly pull out a few strands of hair. How does that sound? Simple enough, right?"
"If it’s that simple, why aren’t you sending someone else to do it?" I scoffed.
"The person being monitored is quite alert and wary of any strangers approaching him. So, I think it will be difficult to obtain a sample without drawing his attention."
"Am I really going to succeed?" I said with a hint of sarcasm.
Ah Huang looked into my eyes seriously and said, "Honestly, I have a lot of faith in you. I don't know why, but I always feel that wherever you are, there will be a turning point. It's as if you have the innate ability to change everything around you, making many things unpredictable."
"Is it really that exaggerated? You're being a bit idealistic," I replied with a dismissive smile.
After chatting with Ah Huang for a while and finishing lunch, we returned to the vehicle. Ah Huang parked next to the hospital and suggested that I take a nap in the vehicle before heading to work in the afternoon when there would be more people around, making it easier to act. Naturally, I followed his arrangement, and soon I fell asleep amidst the constant ringing of his phone.
When Ah Huang woke me up, I saw that it was already three o'clock. I quickly sat up and asked, "So, is it time to go up now?"
"To make a long story short, that Cleaner is responsible for that floor's cleaning duties. I've arranged for two people to be waiting at Professor Qin's office. One is to buy you some time and provide cover, and the other will create opportunities for you once you go up there so you can collect samples. They've got your back."
I wasn't nervous at first, but hearing him say that made me feel a bit anxious. I took a deep breath, opened the car door, and prepared to get out.
"Hey, just relax," Ah Huang comforted me.
I smiled at him, got out of the car, closed the door behind me, and walked toward the outpatient clinic.
In the afternoon, there were indeed more people at work. I glanced at the electronic display board and saw that Professor Qin was on duty again. I headed straight to the second floor where Professor Qin's clinic was located and noticed two people waiting there.
I decided not to approach just yet and instead leaned against the stair railing, pretending to be leisurely while observing my surroundings.
After a while, the Cleaner finally arrived. He held a mop in one hand and a bucket in the other, seemingly ready to clean the floor. As he slowly walked over, I casually glanced at him but noticed he was also staring back at me. Thinking quickly, I picked up my phone and pretended to make a call. "Hello, Uncle? I'm here; it seems like there's someone at Professor Qin's office. I'll have to wait a bit before seeing him for my prescription!"
While pretending to talk on the phone, I kept an eye on him. This tactic worked; he turned his face away and slowly walked toward Professor Qin's Emergency Room.
I hung up the phone and watched him walk to the end of the room, dipping the mop into the water and starting to clean the floor. His movements were slow and stiff. A person like him didn’t seem like a murderer at all. It was hard to believe he could overpower those tall missing persons. Could there have been a mistake?
The Cleaner slowly made his way to Professor Qin's door. I noticed two people sitting by the entrance stand up, seemingly creating an opportunity for me. I turned and walked over slowly.
As I approached, the Cleaner also dragged his mop over to their side. Suddenly, the two began to argue, pointing fingers at each other as if they were fighting over something. I pretended to be a passerby and slipped onto a waiting chair across from Professor Qin's office.
The Cleaner acted as if he hadn’t seen them, not sparing them a glance as he continued mopping, simply maneuvering around them through the middle of the corridor.
Perhaps it was too noisy outside; I saw Professor Qin open the door to the Emergency Room. Upon witnessing this scene, he looked a bit surprised. Just then, as the Cleaner passed by them, I noticed the two exchanged glances and suddenly embraced each other, forcefully pushing toward the Cleaner. I realized they intended to create chaos and roll into him, which would give us a chance to grab his hair.
I abruptly stood up, feigning shock while actually preparing to take action.
To my surprise, at that very moment when the two lunged forward, I saw the Cleaner step back suddenly. With a thud, the two missed their target and fell at my feet.
They actually missed?!
Was it just a coincidence?
I glanced at the Cleaner; his face showed no expression—only indifference and disregard—as if everything happening around him had nothing to do with him.
“Li Ping!” Professor Qin spoke up at that moment. “Tell them to keep it down; this is a hospital! If they want to argue, they should do it outside!”
“Understood,” the Cleaner replied quietly. He turned to the two on the floor and coldly said, “Please keep quiet and wait your turn for treatment; otherwise, I’ll have to call security.”
The two on the ground froze in place, clearly taken aback by this unexpected turn of events. They exchanged glances and slowly sat up, taking seats across from me.
The one called Li Ping, the Cleaner, continued to dip the mop in water and dragged it across the floor.
Professor Qin looked at those people for a while, then glanced at me, shook his head, and went back, closing the door behind him.
My mind was racing, wondering how I could take a sample.
I stood up, feigning anxiety as I paced back and forth a few steps. Then I suddenly walked towards Li Ping. Just as I was two steps away from him, Li Ping abruptly stopped mopping and intentionally flicked the mop down with a loud thud right between us.
I immediately spoke up, "Excuse me, Master, I’d like to ask how much longer the patient inside Professor Qin will be?"
"I don’t know," Li Ping replied with a glance at me before continuing to mop the floor.
His vigilance was indeed high. I pretended to be helpless and continued to stroll around the area. To avoid drawing his attention, I started walking from one end to the other while thinking of other ways to proceed.
When I reached the other end, I looked up and inadvertently spotted a sign: "Janitor's Lounge." Suddenly, an idea struck me!
