“Company Commander Wang, is that your girlfriend? She's really beautiful! Why don't you let her in?” The duty sergeant from the Registration Room of the Special Operations Unit had been eyeing her for a while and finally asked me.
“She’s as thin as a stick; how could she be my girlfriend? She's not my type!” I scoffed.
“Hehe.” The sergeant chuckled and turned back to glance out the window. It was typical for Special Forces; young buddies who had been cooped up for too long would gawk at any slightly attractive girl they saw.
“Stop staring; she’s from a wealthy family and wouldn’t look at us soldiers!” I said while filling out the form.
The content of the form was minimal, and it didn’t take long for me to finish. I called the clerk at the office to stamp it, and luckily, he was still there working late. I hung up and headed over to the office.
Businesslike, I quickly got the stamp and returned to the entrance. To my surprise, she was still waiting there. Huh, she didn’t go back to her vehicle? Women like her are usually quite delicate; with the sun still blazing, I wondered if she was worried about me.
I stepped outside and handed her the document. “Xu Zengjing, right? What else do you need us to do?” The template had her name on it; I just filled in a few places and signed it. Honestly, her name didn’t match her demeanor at all; looking at her, she was anything but calm. “Zengjing” seemed more fitting for someone who had once been tranquil!
She shot me a glare. “Hmph, consider this a favor. Make sure it goes through on the first try; I don’t want to see you again.”
“Likewise,” I couldn’t help but reply.
She glared at me again before turning toward her car. I shrugged and headed back to camp. People like her were enough to deal with just once; I really didn’t want any further interaction.
Old Bi was in high spirits because there were fewer people deployed from the Special Operations Unit this time due to many staying behind for guard duty, so they received a symbolic box of regular cigarettes. He felt awkward asking for more, so he distributed them all. When he saw me handing him some premium cigarettes, he couldn’t stop grinning.
“Hey, during these days off, let’s go out at night!” he whispered.
“Where to?”
“Shh! Keep it down! Let’s go to Hexi Bar Street; there’s a new place that many beautiful girls from nearby colleges like to hang out!”
“You can’t be serious?! Aren’t you afraid Lulu will find out? Or that you might run into her there?”
“Come on! She doesn’t go to bars anymore! Let’s invite Fourth Uncle! We can all have some fun together! Besides, you’re not single anymore either; maybe you’ll meet someone nice!”
“Me? I’m not as lucky as you! Meeting the right person is just a dream!”
"What the hell! What do you mean? Are you mocking me?!"
"Hey, call the boss too!"

Laughter aside, everyone made their calls. Zhang Xing was too busy with a fire inspection and couldn't make it. Ah Huang, however, had time since his girlfriend was out of town for a field survey, leaving him free for the weekend. They agreed on a time to meet at 8 PM sharp at Hexi Bar Street.
After dinner, they organized to watch the News Broadcast, and once the warriors began their free activities, I returned to my room to change into casual clothes. I briefed Old Tang about Unit matters and stepped out with Old Bi. My status had changed; when I was a Squad Leader, I had to be cautious about going out at night for fear of being caught by the Company Commander or the authorities. Now, as a Commander, as long as there wasn't a combat readiness task, one Commander could usually go out freely during holidays if another was present, provided safety was ensured.
Once outside, Old Bi and I hailed a taxi straight to Hexi. When we arrived, Ah Huang hadn't shown up yet. Standing on the street corner under the bright lights, we noticed many beautiful women appearing from nowhere, strolling around in the warm July air. The girls were dressed quite lightly, and Old Bi laughed heartily, repeatedly expressing his regrets. Knowing they were all about to get engaged, I teased him that he was still single and could try his luck at flirting. Old Bi wiped his mouth and chuckled, "You know how Lu Lu is; she's fiery like a Hunan girl. I'd better not provoke her. But looking is fine, right? Hehehe."
"Old Bi, you're such a creep!"

After chatting for a while, it was nearly 8:10 when Ah Huang finally got out of a taxi. Old Bi waved frantically, and Ah Huang looked around before walking over.
"Hey, Huang sir afraid of being seen by colleagues?!" Old Bi joked.
"Shh! Don't be ridiculous; have you two been waiting long? I got held up at a meeting for a case investigation and rushed over without even eating."
"Come on! Work and play both matter; it's all about balance. Let's go in and eat while we drink," Old Bi said cheerfully.
We walked into the newly opened bar together. People are always looking for something fresh; Hexi Bar Street is bustling because there are many young people around. New bars often have special offers to attract customers, each trying to stand out with unique features. This has led to an explosion of bars in the area. Moreover, many bars are owned by the same big boss—something Ah Huang shared with us—but that didn't concern us much since we only visited occasionally for the lively atmosphere.
The bar wasn't too crowded yet; there were still empty tables available. Old Bi led us to a spot near the bar because many girls tend to order drinks there, allowing us to see everything clearly. It was undeniable that Old Bi had better social skills than us!
After settling in, we started with several rounds of drinks. With the music pumping through the bar, I felt completely relaxed as I leaned back in my chair and observed the diverse crowd around me; it truly felt like a joy.
After chatting for a bit longer, Old Bi began searching for girls to flirt with, leaving just me and Ah Huang behind. Ah Huang also had a carefree spirit, so we quietly continued drinking beer—definitely filling! After several large mugs of draft beer, I shouted loudly, "Fourth Uncle! I'm heading to the restroom!" Not bothering to check if he heard me or not, I stood up and made my way toward the bathroom.
I asked the waiter, and the restroom was located at the back door of the bar. I slowly made my way over, and next to the restroom was a corridor. At the end of the corridor, there was an open private room. As I passed by, I overheard someone inside saying, "Put the drugs in those girls' drinks!"
"That's not good; those are my classmates, and my girlfriend is in there too."
"You bastard! Fine, if you won't do it, then pay back what you owe right now!"
"Brother Ma! Brother Ma! I'll do it, I'll do it."
"Now that's more like it. Don't worry; we won't touch your girlfriend! Haha!"
Curious, I peeked inside and saw three men in the dim light. One was a young guy close to my age, probably a student, while the other two were obscured in the shadows, lounging on the back chairs.
"What are you looking at?! Get lost!" one of the men shouted at me as he leaned forward slightly.
Not understanding the situation, I didn't react aggressively. I just smiled and continued toward the restroom.
The bar was quite large, and it took a while for me to take care of business. Just as I was about to head back, my phone vibrated. The noise inside the bar was too loud, so I hurriedly walked a few steps out of the restroom corridor, turned left, and pushed open the back door. It led to an alley—narrow and long—likely a shared space for all the bars to dispose of their garbage. There were piles of clutter that barely allowed one person to pass through.
I checked my phone; it was a call from home. I answered and leaned against the back door while chatting for a bit. After hanging up, as I turned to go back, I had just reached the side of the restroom corridor when I heard a man and a woman talking.
"Don't go back; just stay here!" The man's voice sounded noticeably anxious.
"Why?" The woman sounded confused.
"It's nothing; did you drink that foreign liquor earlier?"
"Everyone drank it!"
"Hurry up and throw up! Quickly!" The man pushed the woman toward the restroom without hesitation.
I felt a surge of suspicion; wasn't that the voice of the man from earlier? Something seemed off, so I took a few steps back and stood outside the restroom corridor to observe. Huang was still over there; I thought he might be very interested in what was happening.
After waiting for a while, the woman inside still hadn't come out. The man in the hallway was becoming increasingly anxious, pacing back and forth.
Just then, a few people came from the private room. As they approached, I could see that two men were supporting a woman between them. She had long hair and wore a short skirt, but her hair obscured her face, making it hard to see her features. She stumbled as she walked, and the two men lewdly "supported" her toward the back door.
"Brother Ma!" The man outside the restroom called out when he saw them and ran over.
I lowered my head, pretending to walk toward the restroom, and glanced over as I passed by.
The group eyed me warily, and the woman seemed disoriented. "Xu Zengjing's father seems to be an official!" Thanks to my keen hearing, I caught the man's urgent words as I walked a few steps closer.
"Hahaha, this is exactly what we want! You can leave now; go settle the bill!" the man called Brother Ma said.
Xu Zengjing?! Is that her? I turned to look just as the two men led her out through the back door. I was still far from Ah Huang and didn't have time to run over and call him. I pulled out my phone, found Ah Huang's number, and dialed—no answer! I tried Old Bi's number too—still no answer!
Seeing that they were about to push Xu Zengjing out the back door, I realized I couldn't wait any longer. No matter how arrogant that woman was or how much I disliked her, I couldn't just stand by and watch her suffer! Besides, I was a soldier.
Having had a few drinks made me impulsive. I shoved my phone into my pocket and hurried after them.
