"What on earth is going on?!" I was utterly exhausted and sleepy, but the news brought by Murong Qian was so shocking that I couldn't help but perk up, running while asking.
Although everyone called Murong Qian Forrest Gump, it was only because of her courage and speed; her mind and speech were quite clear. "Report, Company Commander! When Xiao Hua and her team were inspecting the embankment, they discovered that a section of it had been washed away. Just then, someone insisted on driving onto the embankment. Sheng Xiong and Jinghe couldn't stop her at the entrance of the embankment road, and she forced her way in. As a result, Xiao Hua stopped her and declared that her car would be requisitioned for flood control."
"Wait! They didn't fill in the gap, did they?!" I stopped in shock, staring at Murong.
"Yes, Company Commander!" Murong replied clearly.
"…"
I had no choice but to quicken my pace forward. Fortunately, it wasn't too far; within a few minutes, I could see a crowd blocking the embankment road ahead.
Among the crowd, I spotted a tall figure—who else could it be but Sheng Xiong?! I hurried my steps and finally reached the back of the crowd. A bunch of people seemed to be watching something. I paused to catch my breath but overheard:
"Heh heh, how did you know filling it in would work, Squad Leader A?!" This was the voice of Second Squad Leader.
"Haha, why do you think I'm Squad Leader A?!" came Xuanhua's voice.
"How much is this car worth?!" asked Second Class Vice Leader.
"It shouldn't be too much, right? Isn't Jinghe's car cheaper than that Japanese kid's? Hey, where's Jinghe?!" Xuanhua shouted loudly.
Jinghe was right in front of me. I grabbed his collar and pulled him around. "Damn it, fatty! What have you all done?!"
Seeing me arrive, Jinghe's face turned pale. Before he could answer me, everyone turned around. Xuanhua pushed through the crowd and exclaimed, "Haha, Company Commander! You're here! You must want to commend me for my efforts! Look, look! I managed to block this gap! It took nearly a hundred people several hours; why not let me use my brain…"
"Use your brain?!" I lunged forward and kicked Xuanhua hard!
"Company Commander, what are you doing?!" Xuanhua looked at me with a mix of fear and grievance.
"You... you really did it!" I pointed at Xuanhua, who had just moved a sandbag and then ran over. I was struggling to catch my breath, repeating "you" several times.
Xuanhua immediately smiled and said, "Company Commander, you did great too!"
I felt like I was about to faint.
"Do you even want to keep your position as squad leader?! You can't just push a civilian's car into the water! You're a soldier—don't you understand what Discipline means?! Soldiers are here to protect the people. Do you have any idea how much trouble this could cause?!"
"Company Commander, I was forced into it! Look, where were we supposed to find sandbags to block the Gap? There wasn't a single patrol on this section of the Embankment, and the buildings behind us are just factories. Where could we find sandbags and equipment? We couldn't just stand by and watch the Gap get washed away!" Xuanhua looked completely innocent.
"But you don't have the right to commandeer a civilian's vehicle! Couldn't you report the situation instead?!" I was exasperated.
Xuanhua scratched his head. "I was afraid there wouldn't be enough time to report it. Besides, this car happened to come by at that moment. It was an emergency! Hey! Company Commander, weren't you the one who said we could commandeer civilian vehicles or boats in emergencies to block the Gap?" Xuanhua seemed even more innocent now, using the term "emergency measures." He blinked a few times and glanced down at the red armband he was wearing that said "khq."
"What the hell?!" I was left speechless with anger. "Xuanhua, are you really that clueless?!"
At that moment, Jinghe tugged at me and called out, "Company Commander, you should deal with this issue first. Sheng Xiong is in trouble."
Huh?! There's still more going on?! I looked across the Gap and saw a woman chasing after Sheng Xiong, constantly berating him. Sheng Xiong stood there looking wronged, not daring to retaliate but only dodging her accusations. Perhaps she found his drenched clothes covered in mud repulsive; thankfully, she hadn't resorted to violence.
Oh no! That must be the victim! And it's a woman—this is going to be complicated; women can be unreasonable.
I pushed through the crowd and approached the Gap. Oh no! A brand new Honda Accord was stuck sideways in the Gap. The Gap wasn't very wide or deep; it seemed that this section of the Embankment had been washed down to less than a meter deep. Because of its trapezoidal shape, the car was effectively blocking the Gap, with only some water seeping around its sides.
I shot a fierce glare at Xuanhua. "You're done for this time!"
Taking another look at the pitiful Honda, I cautiously made my way down the slope, wading through the muddy flow at the bottom of the Gap before climbing back up onto the Embankment.
The woman in orange hadn't noticed me yet; she was still yelling at Sheng Xiong, "You guys are nothing but bandits! This is my brand new car! How could you just move it without permission?!" She continued to hit Sheng Xiong with her bag.
“Stop right there, Comrade!” I shouted loudly.
The girl was startled and turned around. She was a young girl, about my height, with straight bangs and shoulder-length hair, bright eyes and a beautiful smile. I thought to myself that she looked quite pretty, and it was hard to believe she could be so fierce.
“Who are you?! What’s it to you?” she frowned, sounding impatient.
“Uh, well, I’m their Company Commander,” I said, feeling a bit sheepish.
“Company Commander?!” The girl was taken aback for a moment but quickly reacted. “You’re in charge of all this?!”
“Yes!” I forced a smile and nodded.
“Smack!” In the next moment, a crisp slap echoed, leaving five finger marks on my face!
“Soldier Thug!”
I was stunned, standing there in shock as silence fell around us. After a moment, “Company Commander!” “Damn it, you dare to hit me?!” Xuanhua was the first to react from over there.
“How dare you hit my Company Commander!” Sheng Xiong immediately placed both hands on the girl’s shoulders, ready to grab her and throw her down the embankment.
“Let go of me! You bunch of thugs!” the girl shouted indignantly.
“Let her go.” I touched my face and said reluctantly, turning to shout at the others, “Second Squad, stop watching! Get back to what you were doing!”
“Ah!” Sheng Xiong was taken aback and loosened his grip. The girl broke free from him and pointed at me. “I’m going to report you!”
I felt a bit annoyed too, but this whole situation started because of Xuanhua and the others. As the Company Commander, I could only take some responsibility for it.
“This young Comrade!”
"Who do you think you are, Comrade?!"
"Ma'am! We are executing a Flood Control emergency mission. Up ahead, the Embankment already has a Gap. Didn't the personnel stationed at the intersection tell you that you can't go through?!" I gathered my thoughts and asked.
"Company Commander! We tried to stop her, but she wouldn't listen. She insisted on driving through, saying her father is up ahead on the Embankment and she needs to find him," Sheng Xiong interjected.
"This Comrade, that's where you're wrong! Strictly speaking, you're obstructing military operations. Stopping you is a lawful action," I said calmly as I looked at her.
"Well, well, well, you can't just commandeer my car! It's my new car!" The girl stammered, shifting the topic. She turned to look at her new car submerged in water, and her anger seemed to flare up again.
"Do you know who my dad is? You poor soldiers!" she spat out bitterly.
Honestly, at this point, although I was a bit irritated, I could only hold my subordinates accountable. "In an emergency situation, commandeering your vehicle is in accordance with national regulations."
"I'm going to report you! How can you manage your subordinates like this?! You soldiers are unreasonable!" After hearing my explanation, the girl suddenly blurted this out.
I was losing patience. "Go ahead and report us. Sheng Xiong, please escort her away. Everyone else, continue assessing the danger. Report the situation of this Gap to the Company Commander; we need to wait for him to bring the Technical Company over for further handling."
I glanced at the girl before turning away. I knew that adding more fuel to the fire would only escalate tensions. Sheng Xiong acknowledged and stepped forward to prepare to "escort" her away. Perhaps Sheng Xiong was too intimidating and exuded too much pressure, or maybe this girl had some obsessive tendencies; either way, she was being pushed toward the embankment road while shouting, "I'll remember you! Big-eared one with a bad attitude, right?! I'll remember you! Just wait!" I chuckled lightly; what good would remembering do? I walked away slowly, unaware that this chance encounter would lead to many troubles in the future.
Still feeling uneasy, I started walking forward from A Squad's position and checked all areas again. Fortunately, there was only an issue at Xuanhua; everything else seemed fine for now.
When I reached the Gap, I found that the Company Commander had already brought people from the Technical Company to reinforce the embankment. "Company Commander! There's also a situation over there!" After shouting this out, I suddenly felt a bit guilty; honestly, I wasn't sure if it was appropriate for the soldiers to push vehicles into the Gap's water like that.
"There's another Gap?!"
"Yes! But it's not big."
"Do you have sandbags? How are we handling this?!" The Company Commander approached urgently.
"Uh, this."
"Hurry!" The Company Commander wiped his face, looking somewhat fatigued.
"There’s a small gap. Because we didn’t have the equipment, we requisitioned a vehicle from the area to fill it in. The Company Commander will have to send the Technical Company over for follow-up work." I deliberated for a moment and decided to use "we," after all, I was their Company Commander, and I couldn't avoid responsibility when something went wrong.
The Company Commander froze for a moment, his expression shifting from urgency to shock, then to disbelief, and finally to anger—more exaggerated than anything Stephen Chow portrayed in "King of Comedy"!
After a moment, he shouted, "What are you still standing there for?! Take me to see it!"
"Military-civilian disputes are the most troublesome! Especially at such a sensitive time! We are here to serve the area, not to create problems. How could you all be so blind?!" The Company Commander rushed toward the site, cursing as he ran, while I cautiously followed behind, silently enduring the scolding.
"How could your Unit be so bold?! Don’t tell me you did this; you shouldn’t be that foolish. Did the soldiers cause this? Those kids are only emboldened by you! Do they not know their limits? Hey, did you even check what kind of vehicle it is? Uh, is it expensive?"
