"What! A fish?!" I thought I hadn't heard correctly. To be honest, at first, I thought it was a water monster! How big could a fish really be?
"A... a big fish!" Xuanhua clung tightly to the tree trunk, stuttering. I was somewhat baffled, but whatever it was, we needed to leave quickly. I patted the chubby guy, "Start it up and see!"
"Okay!" He replied and suddenly revved the speedboat. The engine roared to life, and the speedboat shot forward a few meters. "It's good to go!" he shouted.
"Reverse! Get Xuanhua!"
"Yes!" The chubby guy immediately maneuvered the speedboat, slowly backing it up toward the water beneath Xuanhua.
"Good, good!" I shouted as I gauged the distance. The speedboat had reached under the tree, and Xuanhua let out a breath of relief, releasing his grip and jumping into the speedboat.
"Oh my God, that scared me to death!" As soon as Xuanhua landed, he anxiously grabbed my hand. "Company Commander! There really is a monster!"
"What monster?! Wasn't it just a big fish?" I asked in confusion.
"Yes, it was a big fish, but Company Commander, have you ever seen a fish that's eight or nine meters long?!" Xuanhua looked around nervously at the surface of the water.
"Eight or nine meters long... fish?!" I couldn't believe my ears. "Xuanhua, you must have seen it wrong!"
"How could that be?" Sheng Xiong chimed in, equally astonished.
"No, no! It's true! I saw it from the tree; it was that long and had a wide back. It swam right beneath me in the water!" Xuanhua shivered involuntarily.
As if to confirm his words, Pudding squawked from the branches and flapped its wings as it flew over to Jinghe at the helm.
"Pudding!" it called out to us.
I glanced at it and turned away, saying, "As long as it's not a monster, I'm not afraid. There are definitely big fish here; this reservoir is so large, it's normal. It's just that your exaggeration is a bit much."
"Company Commander, not necessarily!" Jinghe turned around at that moment.
"What?"
"Company Commander, look at our speedboat. It's about five or six meters long, right? With all these people on board, and it was rocked by that thing. I think it's quite possible!"
Everyone fell silent for a moment. Xuanhua suddenly grabbed my arm and shook me. "Company Commander, let's hurry! This reservoir is strange! Those two villagers last night must have been eaten by a monster fish!"
"Stop talking nonsense! Stay calm!" I scolded.
"Jinghe, start the boat! Back to the village!" The heart still drives the boat for eternity.
As if we had a tacit understanding, everyone fell silent and focused on their tasks. Jinghe piloted the boat, Sheng Xiong kept watch on the left, I scanned the right side of the water surface, and Xuanhua held tightly onto the steering wheel while looking back. For a moment, no one spoke; only Old Lady continued to mumble, occasionally clearly uttering the word "cat!"
However, no one had the mind to think about anything else; everyone just wanted to leave this place as soon as possible. After things quieted down, all we could hear was the hum of the engine. Suddenly, I realized how unusually silent it had become around us.
There were no insect sounds like before on the island, no splashes from fish breaking the surface—just an eerie stillness. Why did it feel so strange?!
A gust of morning wind blew by, and I shivered, realizing that I was covered in sweat without knowing when it had happened! The speedboat roared as it accelerated toward the edge of the reservoir; however, reaching the shore meant we had to pass through a vast central water area. "The faster, the better! The faster, the better!" I couldn't help but repeat in my mind.
Unfortunately, things did not go as hoped; the more one fears something, the more it comes to pass! Pudding flapped its wings and soared into the air once again. This creature was as accurate as an early warning system, causing everyone to lift their heads in unison, staring at it.
Pudding circled above us and then, with a swift motion, flew towards the left side of the Speedboat, letting out a series of loud quacks. The sound echoed across the vast, tranquil water surface, piercing and eerie. "Pudding, oh Pudding, you truly are a Great Raven!" I murmured as I watched the two ripples slowly parting on the water beneath Pudding.
"Company Commander, there's movement!" "Company Commander, it's coming again!" Xuanhua and Sheng Xiong shouted together.
"I see it!" I replied impatiently. The monster—let's call it that for now—was approaching vertically from the left side of our Speedboat, moving at a moderate speed and still about twenty to thirty meters away.
"Jinghe, accelerate and head for the shore!" I commanded.
"Yes!" Jinghe didn’t even glance down before immediately pushing the throttle to full speed. I felt myself lurch backward as the Speedboat surged forward, the engine roaring as it propelled us ahead.
" Sheng Xiong, crouch down and protect Old Lady!" Considering the inertia from the Speedboat's acceleration, I needed someone to shield the elderly woman. Sheng Xiong was tall and heavy-set; crouching would be safe for him!
After giving my instructions, I couldn't help but glance back at the monster and was taken aback! The creature had adjusted its course and increased its speed, charging towards our Speedboat. If it had been a straightforward approach before, it now resembled an inverted V formation. The monster was directly targeting the front of our Speedboat—was it trying to ram us? Impossible! I quickly dismissed that thought; with our Speedboat's speed, there was no way we could be overturned by a monster. It was overestimating itself!
"Accelerate again!" I ordered.
"Company Commander, we're already at maximum speed!" Jinghe called out.
Watching as the ripples drew closer and closer, I pondered for a moment before deciding it would be wise to evade. What if it really was a massive fish? Gritting my teeth, I commanded, "Turn right!"
Jinghe executed my order well; with a sharp turn of the steering wheel, the Speedboat veered suddenly to the right. Everyone was thrown hard to the left due to inertia. Just as I struggled to rise and assess the situation with the monster, a loud "thud!" resonated! A tremendous force surged from the stern of the boat, knocking everyone down onto the deck while simultaneously silencing the engine.
"Lost power! The motor has been damaged!" Jinghe's head slammed against the control panel, leaving a large gash that was now smeared with blood. He didn't have time to wipe it away as he pressed a few buttons.
"Damn it! It wasn't aiming for the front of the speedboat; it was trying to destroy the motor!" I cursed, bewildered by the intelligence of this creature.
There was no time to complain. I quickly scanned the others; thankfully, aside from Jinghe's injury, everyone else seemed fine. I took two steps to the back of the speedboat and peered over the edge, gasping in shock.
The propeller was nowhere to be seen! Dark red objects floated on the surface of the water—was it blood? Perhaps it had been caught by the propeller too?
Fortunately, everything around us was calm; the monster had likely submerged again. I looked up and saw Pudding circling above the water, but it wasn't croaking loudly anymore, indicating that we were temporarily safe.
"What do we do now?" Xuanhua asked me.
I couldn't afford to explain anything to him; repairing the boat was out of the question. What could we do? We had no choice but to call for help. I fished out the walkie-talkie hanging from my waist.
"Calling, calling, Squad Leader! This is Wang Wei! This is Wang Wei!"
After a moment of static, Clark's voice finally came through. "Received! Received! Company Commander, please speak!"
Thank goodness we were in contact! Everyone let out a sigh of relief. I quickly said, "Squad Leader, get all speedboats to the reservoir immediately! We've had an unexpected stop on our way and need assistance!"
"Understood! I'll gather everyone and head over right away!"
"Don't wait to unload..." Suddenly, a loud thud echoed from beneath the speedboat as something massive struck it from below. The entire vessel lifted slightly before crashing back down into the water. The impact was so sudden that my walkie-talkie slipped from my hand and fell onto the deck below, shattering upon impact.
"Damn it! So cunning, attacking from underwater instead of from both sides?!" I was furious, lying on one side and staring at the water's surface. Not looking was one thing, but once I did, I was instantly stunned: the water was a dark green, making it hard to see far, but I could still make out a massive black shadow slowly drifting past the speedboat, heading to the other side. It was wide, at least two or three meters across, and as for its length, I couldn't quite grasp it at that moment; it felt like a truck. Watching the dark figure glide by, a wave of emotions surged within me—shock! Awe! But more than anything, fear!
Was that a fish?! Could it be the Loch Ness Monster?! This thought flashed through my mind in an instant. My heart tightened!
At that moment, Pudding flew up onto the boat, circling above. "Pudding, why don't you go find some reinforcements?!" Hearing that voice only made me feel worse; I shouted up at it.
Who would have thought that Pudding might actually understand me? Suddenly it stopped calling out and turned back towards the shore!
Alright then, I hope help arrives soon! I thought as I watched Pudding fly away.
"Bang!" Another collision rocked us; everyone lurched forward and backward again. This time it came from the diagonal front of the speedboat, causing the entire vessel to spin around. Was the monster searching for the speedboat's weak point? A chill ran down my spine; it seemed the creature had set its sights on us and wouldn't give up easily.
I turned to look at the speedboat; it was completely empty—nothing at all, not even a stick for defense. "Brothers, we’re in trouble! Whatever it is, we can't just sit here and wait to die. Quickly find something to defend ourselves with! Stay away from the water's edge; don’t fall in!" No joke—something that big could easily swallow us whole if we went overboard! I shouted to a few people while rushing to the back of the boat to open the toolbox.
Disappointingly, the toolbox was stuffed with spare parts for the speedboat, along with rags and engine oil. The only weapon-like item inside was a large wrench—about 40 centimeters long. Would this thing be able to deal with a monster? I couldn't help but chuckle bitterly. Just then, there was a loud crash—"Bang!" The toolbox suddenly flew up and smashed toward my face!
