The hefty man stepped forward with his left foot, sinking his body down, then took a step forward with his right foot. After a couple of these movements, he suddenly exuded a robust aura, reminiscent of a heavy bear emerging from its den! He executed a triangular stepping technique as he swung one arm up while the other followed closely, striking towards Sheng Xiong! It was like a bear clapping its paws together!
“Bear style, bear intent!” Xu couldn’t help but shout out.
At that moment, Sheng Xiong swung his right fist down hard. The hefty man raised both arms to create a gust of wind! He managed to deflect Sheng Xiong ’s single-handed strike, lowered his head, and with a heavy body, charged towards Sheng Xiong!
In an instant, there was a dull thud! The two collided, and surprisingly, Sheng Xiong staggered back two steps!
“It’s truly the Bear Style Fist! It’s the long-lost Bear Style Fist!” Xu observed intently.
“What is this technique?” I didn’t turn around but kept my eyes fixed on the scene.
“The bear form is one of the Twelve Fists of Xingyi. Among animals, bears are known for their unyielding strength and ferocity; their form is imposing, and their shoulder and arm strength is immense. They embody bravery and power; their ability to stand tall and swing their arms is formidable. These characteristics of bears can be applied in combat to overpower opponents with sheer force,” Xu explained confidently.
At that moment, the hefty man shifted into a triangular step again, weaving left and right as he prepared for his next attack. Sheng Xiong leaned back slightly on his left foot, remaining vigilant against the hefty man.
“Look at the hefty man’s footwork! Although this stepping method is lateral, it differs from the serpentine sidesteps; it’s a straight line at right angles, known as the Bear Step! This step has a larger stride and is dignified and stable; only those with deep martial prowess can display its might. To fearlessly counter incoming attacks while maintaining such a stance can be described as dominating,” Xu elaborated.
“The footwork of the Bear Form Fist involves side-stepping and turning sideways in a triangular manner. However, it allows for frontal strikes against enemies while sidestepping to reduce direct pressure. Additionally, this lateral movement can disrupt an opponent's footing by using leg sweeps or knee strikes while appearing to evade attacks from the front. In essence, it’s about striking diagonally while exploiting openings—this embodies the concept of the bear emerging from its den with lateral strikes!”
Xu explained quickly, but the hefty man’s offensive was even faster. He had already collided with Sheng Xiong three times using shoulder charges, elbow strikes, and body slams! Each time Sheng Xiong came at him with full force but found himself unable to gain an advantage; instead, he was forced to retreat step by step, nearing us.
I furrowed my brow. Although the situation was dire, I sensed that Sheng Xiong was not one to easily accept defeat. I remained silent and watched intently. Meanwhile, Old Bi couldn’t help but shout, “Hey, Big Height, if you keep retreating like this, you’ll be out of bounds!”
Indeed! The half basketball court served as a boundary; although it wasn’t explicitly stated that stepping out meant losing, continuously retreating would not look good on him!
To be honest, after watching for a while, I realized that in terms of strength and technique alone—regardless of skill— Sheng Xiong was at a disadvantage due to his size! It wasn’t just about size; he was taller than the hefty man. While they were similar in weight due to the hefty man's stout build, he stood around 1.7 meters tall—much lower than Sheng Xiong's center of gravity. Moreover, every time he attacked from a crouched position aimed below Sheng Xiong's center of gravity highlighted Sheng Xiong's instability. However, if Sheng Xiong crouched down himself, he wouldn’t be able to exert any force effectively—making him feel quite awkward.
Just then, the hefty man squatted down again and stepped forward with his left foot at an angle while keeping his right foot close behind it at his left ankle. He coiled up like a spring with both knees slightly bent; as he stepped out with his left foot, both hands transformed into fists—his left fist angled downward toward his side while his right fist shot forward and upward. With a sudden movement, he lunged forward low with an upward strike aimed at Sheng Xiong! The combination of elbow strikes and shoulder charges was relentless; it embodied the saying “three consecutive strikes close in like a mountain.” The hefty man's upper body appeared solidly built like iron; it was no wonder he could face off against Sheng Xiong head-on.
With a low growl, Sheng Xiong leaned forward to block the hefty man's upward strike. The hefty man took advantage of this momentum to execute a side charge directly into Sheng Xiong! There was no time for Sheng Xiong to dodge; he had no choice but to meet him head-on! Another dull thud echoed as they collided again. Although this time Sheng Xiong only swayed slightly without retreating, I sensed that he was starting to struggle against the onslaught.
At that moment, the chubby guy suddenly sprang up and headbutted Sheng Xiong right in the face. Sheng Xiong's head snapped back, and he staggered backward; I could clearly see blood gushing from his nose!
" Sheng Xiong, are you okay?!" I couldn't help but shout as I stepped a few paces into the arena. "Haha, Company Commander Wang, don't lose your composure!" Liu Chao laughed from across the way.
I didn't have time to banter with him; my eyes were fixed on Sheng Xiong. He wiped his nose with his hand, glancing at the blood before looking up at the moon, completely oblivious to my shouting.
However, being closest to him, I could see that Sheng Xiong's muscles began to bulge, and his body hair started to grow thicker and longer. From my angle, I noticed a change in his gaze; it had shifted from merely red to a blood-red hue filled with ferocity.
This was bad! How long had it been since Sheng Xiong last took his medication? With all the training lately, I had completely forgotten to keep an eye on him. I looked up and saw a large full moon hanging in the sky—it was a night of the full moon! Sheng Xiong was about to transform!
Meanwhile, the chubby guy was still diligently attacking, showing no signs of stopping until he knocked Sheng Xiong down. But at that moment, no matter if he elbowed or charged at him, Sheng Xiong remained motionless and allowed the attacks to continue. The chubby guy seized the opportunity well; punches and kicks rained down on Sheng Xiong's body, yet he remained unfazed, simply gazing up at the moon.
The chubby guy was oblivious to the danger he was in!
No! I couldn't let anyone see Sheng Xiong transform! Absolutely not! I immediately turned around and grabbed Xu. "Quick, get inside and turn off the lights!" Xu's new recruit training was right here, so he knew where the light controls were. He nodded quickly and slipped into the darkness. Fortunately, everyone was focused on the situation in the arena and didn't notice him.
As soon as I turned back around, I saw that Sheng Xiong had moved. He suddenly lowered his head and silently bared his teeth at the chubby guy, revealing a set of eerie white fangs. The chubby guy froze as Sheng Xiong's right hand shot out like lightning and grabbed his left hand! I could clearly see that Sheng Xiong's nails were visibly growing at an alarming rate!
Suddenly, all the lights around the field went out with a snap. In an instant, we lost all bright illumination; everyone's eyes were still adjusting, and for a moment, nothing was visible. Just then, a long howl echoed through the arena—"Awooo!"—the sound reverberated across the area and soared into the sky! Instantly, chaos erupted all around. "What’s happening?!" "Is there a wolf?!"
The howling continued! I suddenly remembered that during Sheng Xiong's first transformation in New Recruits Company, it had also happened here; only this time it was on the balcony—a much tighter space—and Sheng Xiong had been even more dangerous then!
"Turn on the lights! Hurry!" Liu Chao shouted anxiously. At this moment, Xu returned to my side. I discreetly patted him on the back to signal that he had done well.
Amidst the chaos, another scream rang out—"Ah!!" It was the chubby guy's voice! "I give up! I give up!" he yelled frantically, completely losing his earlier calm demeanor. His voice trembled with fear as if he had encountered something unimaginable.
With another snap, the lights flickered back on around us. The arena was brightly lit again, revealing an astonishing sight: only the chubby guy remained in the center— Sheng Xiong was nowhere to be seen!
"He must have returned to Unit! Wu Chao, go find Sheng Xiong! I'll stay here!" I decisively commanded as Wu Chao turned and dashed back while leaving behind a group of confused individuals.
Looking back at the chubby guy now revealed in full light, he no longer resembled a skilled fighter; his clothes were torn in several places with long streaks of blood visible in some areas. Fortunately, they didn’t seem too deep; he hadn’t lost much blood. He crouched on the ground with his arms over his head, trembling all over while repeatedly shouting "I surrender! I surrender!"
Liu Chao's face looked extremely grim. He waved his hand, and the tall and skinny guy went over to help carry the fat man back. As they lifted him, the fat man was still trembling, repeatedly muttering, "Not human! He's not human!"
As they passed by Liu Chao, he was anxious and angry, kicking the fat man in the rear. "Damn it, what happened to you?!"
The fat man shivered, looking at Liu Chao as if he had regained some clarity. "Comrade Commander, I don’t know! I really don’t know! When the lights went out, I felt my opponent's strength suddenly multiply; it was absolute power! I couldn’t resist and was knocked to the ground. The opponent was like a hungry wolf! Oh, and it had claws! It’s not human; it’s a wolf!" The poor fat man was already a bit incoherent.
"What are you going crazy about!? Hurry up and get him back! Do you want to embarrass us by leaving him here?!" Looking at the pitiful fat man, Liu Chao said irritably.
"Hehehe, Comrade Liu, don’t lose your composure!" I smiled as I approached.
Liu Chao shot me a fierce glare. "What on earth are you all doing?!" He threw down that remark and turned to head back to the barracks. I called out after him, "Comrade Liu, don’t forget about the bet! It’s getting late; you all should rest well. Let’s finalize the bet tomorrow!"
Liu Chao paused for a moment but didn’t linger any longer and went straight back inside, leaving behind the soldiers of Tiger Head Company who were puzzled and discussing among themselves, "What happened? Didn’t we just see victory in sight?" "Why did Fatty get so scared?!" "It’s really strange; I heard a wolf howl just now. Did you guys hear it too?"
