Yes, she was definitely a girl! With short hair that reached her ears, an oval face, large eyes, and fair skin, she was strikingly beautiful. Her high-bridged nose added to her charm, and she looked no older than twenty-four. When she saw me, she paused for a moment before quickly furrowing her brows and asking, "Who are you? What are you doing in my room?" Perhaps noticing the backpack I was holding, she continued, "You’re not going to tell me you walked into the wrong room, are you? This is the Girls' Dormitory!"
I felt embarrassed and cursed the fool at the registration desk a thousand times in my mind. Damn it! That idiot must have done this on purpose. I never expected there would be a Female Instructor participating in this training.
My mind raced as I thought of how to defuse the situation. Suddenly, an idea struck me. "Oh, it's like this. I'm also here for training as an Instructor; I just checked in. I heard that the experts from the upper command regarding battlefield medical assistance had already arrived. I happened to pass by your room and saw the door open, so I thought I'd come in and pay you a visit. I didn't expect such a young expert. I'm sorry for disturbing you!"
The beautiful girl burst out laughing. "I'm not an expert; my teacher lives next door but just stepped out and hasn't returned yet. If you're looking for him, you'll have to wait."
I felt quite clever for coming up with that excuse and smiled as I said, "Alright then, thank you!" Grabbing my backpack, I hurriedly retreated.
Once outside, I quickly made my way back to the registration area. I couldn't get angry at the girl, but I was furious with that fool. That idiot was probably watching me with a smug look on his face, ready to enjoy my embarrassment.
"What kind of arrangement is this? You don't even know if it's male or female inside?"
"What do you mean?" he asked knowingly.
"There's a Female Instructor in Room 106!"
"What 106? Mine is in 109!" The fool sneered. "Did you see there was a Female Instructor inside and thought you'd go flirt with her? Now you're back looking for excuses."
I stared at him; he had that look of someone itching for a fight. Suddenly, I smiled at him and said, "Some people really do resemble fools." Then I turned and walked away.
"What did you say? Who's the fool?" Ignoring his shouts from behind me, I headed straight for Room 109. That idiot must have been humiliated by the girl and wanted to regain some balance by messing with me. Captain or not, his intelligence was lacking; I bet he wouldn’t dare confront her.
The room was empty when I arrived. I dropped off my luggage, made my bed, organized my Internal Affairs documents, tidied up the place a bit, and changed into my Camouflage Uniform. Checking the time, it was already past 5:10 PM, so I stood by the window looking at the surroundings while waiting for dinner.
Soon enough, the Assembly Whistle blew. With a loud call of "Assemble! Dinner time!" footsteps echoed from upstairs as people poured out of their rooms—some in Camouflage Uniforms, others in short-sleeved uniforms, and even a few in civilian clothes—filling the courtyard below.
In addition to that fool and a skinny officer downstairs, there was now a Colonel present. He barked out orders: "Line up facing me in four rows according to height!"
With someone directing them, the crowd quickly became more orderly. A few minutes later, we were all lined up. I stood in the Second Row as the third person from the left while scanning around for Old Bi when I heard the Colonel shout, "Attention!"
I quickly stopped moving and stood at attention.
After completing all the necessary formalities before addressing us, he continued, "I am your team leader for this training session; my surname is Liu. I will be responsible for your living arrangements. If you have any questions or issues, feel free to come to me."
He pointed to the pig's head beside him. "This is Vice Captain Chen, responsible for assisting with management. The officer next to him, Team Leader Ding, is our assistant and the liaison officer, responsible for conveying notifications and assisting with training and other logistical work."
He continued, "The Commander places great importance on this training session. Tonight, the Leader will come to give a speech and motivate everyone. During the assessment, the Leader will also be present to inspect. Everyone here is an elite from their respective units, so make sure to cherish this opportunity, learn well, and showcase your true abilities to let the Leader see the combat effectiveness of each unit. Is that clear?!"
"Understood, Whitened!"
"Good. Team Leader Ding will be responsible for leading everyone to the cafeteria across from the dormitory building. After dinner, everyone will change into Camouflage Uniforms and stand by for assembly at any time. After mobilization, the training plan will be sent to each dormitory, and you will be assigned to classes and groups then. The Instructors will have a task assignment meeting tonight, so wait for further notice! Alright, let's eat!"
At this moment, I noticed Old Bi in the middle of the fourth row, right in front of me—second in Row A—was that Female Instructor. Team Leader Ding directed everyone to turn left and head toward the cafeteria. After going through the mandatory singing before meals, we finally sat down at the dining table.
The Health Instructors were at one table; aside from the experts who didn't come to the cafeteria, there were only four Health Instructors including me—two wearing Glasses while I and the beautiful Female Instructor did not. After chatting, I learned that the two Instructors came from hospitals under two subordinate units. The beauty was named Xiao Yu, from Chengdu, four years older than me by a few months. She graduated from Third Military Medical University and was currently pursuing her master's degree, having been invited to teach alongside her professor from the field surgery department at Third Military Medical University.
In a military unit where there are more men than women, Xiao Yu's beauty attracted attention; many Cadets took advantage of getting food at our table to sneak glances at her. Fortunately, Xiao Yu seemed accustomed to such friendly curiosity after often accompanying her professor to military units; she ate gracefully and even greeted some Cadets. The two Military Doctors beside her appeared shy and somewhat reserved.
It truly reflected the saying: "Desire leads to strength." I had no particular thoughts about a girl older than me; moreover, we were not in the same military district or circle. One was an academic type who might stay at school or be assigned to a large hospital while I was mixed up with Special Forces; there would likely be no intersection in our futures. So I remained calm and composed, eating and chatting as usual until we quickly finished this pleasant dinner.
After dinner, Old Bi chased after me out of the cafeteria. "Hey, Old Wang! Old Wang!"
"What’s up?"
"Which girl is that?"
"The Instructors."
"I know they’re Instructors; introduce me!"
"Get lost! You’ve got Lulu already."
"Hey, I know that; I just want to make more friends."
Just like that, Old Bi followed me with a shameless grin all the way to my room. Too lazy to go back up and then come down for assembly again, we chatted idly in my room for a while. I told Old Bi about how the pig's head had tried to mess with me but ended up making me angry instead. Old Bi frowned for a moment before saying, "Damn it! You're putting me in a tough spot; that pig's head won't have any good feelings toward me now. This is going to be difficult."
Since we had just arrived and were unfamiliar with everything, I didn’t know how to comfort him. Just as I was pondering what else to talk about, the whistle blew. Assembly time!
Stepping outside, I saw Team Leader Ding blowing the Assembly Whistle; Liu Team was absent while the pig's head stood nearby. After lining up, I noticed there were about sixty or seventy people in total; most were soldiers with relatively few officers—only about ten—and they all looked quite young, similar in age to me and Old Bi. Their faces radiated confidence, passion, and eagerness. It was no wonder that young leaders like them were eager to showcase their skills during such training sessions and attract everyone's attention.
As he was thinking, Team Leader Ding organized the group and reported to Pighead Deputy Team. He cleared his throat, preparing to speak.
"Uh, well, the captain has gone to meet the Leader, so I'll say a few words first. First of all, welcome everyone to our training session. This is an opportunity provided by the organization, and you all should cherish it and work hard. Secondly, since you are here, you must obey our management. For any Cadet who does not comply with the rules, we will report them for dismissal and criticize them in the announcement after the training ends. Thirdly, this training session will be managed in a closed manner. As long as you leave the dormitory building and dining hall area, you must ask for leave from our team leaders. Otherwise, if caught by Patrol, it will be treated as a disciplinary violation leading to dismissal."
At this point, Pighead cast a glance at me intentionally or unintentionally before shifting his gaze back to the front row where Xiao Yu sat. "Ah, there's one more thing I need to clarify. As you can see, we have a Female Instructor joining us for this training session, and it might be inconvenient for her. Therefore, after discussion, we have unanimously decided to vacate the first-floor washroom for the Female Instructor's use. Comrades on the first floor will need to overcome this difficulty and use the facilities on the second floor instead."
He then flashed a smile at Xiao Yu. I couldn't see Xiao Yu's expression from where I stood but thought to myself that who would oppose such behavior in public? He certainly knows how to play the good guy. Does Pighead have some thoughts about the Female Instructor?
Pighead continued rambling on about who knows what; I stood there not really listening. I was just thinking that being unable to go anywhere for a month would be incredibly boring. Plus, having to ask for leave just to walk around nearby? I had always heard that the Main Combat Unit had strict management, but I didn't expect it to be this strict.
Pighead went on and on without any sign of stopping, and it was getting darker outside. Finally, the last ray of sunlight disappeared at the horizon. Team Leader Ding somehow turned on a switch, and four large lights surrounding the open space between the building and dining hall lit up simultaneously, illuminating everything like daylight. While I was lost in thought, I suddenly heard the sound of cars approaching—must be the leaders arriving.
Sure enough, Pighead hurriedly stopped his speech and rushed toward the direction of the cars. I turned my head just in time to see three green off-road vehicles driving straight into the open space in front of the building.
Before the cars even came to a complete stop, Pighead ran over immediately. He stood aside and as soon as the first vehicle halted, he opened the rear door respectfully to welcome out a figure—what caught everyone's attention first was the dazzling star insignia on this person's shoulder; it was a Major General!
