I looked up and noticed a girl standing next to us, her appearance average, with medium-short hair, a pointed chin, a pale face, and a thin frame that suggested she might be slightly malnourished. Strangely enough, despite the heat, she was bundled up in long sleeves and pants. Was she not afraid of the heat? I wondered if this was Moya's friend. Thankfully, I could use her to change the subject. "Moya, who is this?" I quickly turned my head towards Moya.
"Oh, this is my friend, Swallow." Moya was very enthusiastic upon seeing her friend and immediately pulled her to sit beside herself. "My friend here is amazing; most of her dreams come true. She told me we would definitely have a connection!" Xiao Mo Ya added to me. Having a connection doesn’t necessarily mean we should become friends, I thought; this girl is really stubborn.
"Swallow, this is Wang Wei." Xiao Mo Ya introduced me to the girl named Swallow, then leaned in to whisper something in her ear. Swallow looked at me and said flatly, "So ordinary." Her tone was monotonous and lacked variation, just like her demeanor. I was momentarily at a loss for words; feeling awkward, I caught sight of Old Bi entering with a girl and quickly stood up to greet them, escaping from the situation. It seemed I would need another opportunity to clarify things with Xiao Mo Ya.
Old Bi sat down with Lulu. I took a good look at Lulu and felt that she looked completely different from when I saw her at the bar last time. A typical Hunan girl—short in stature, very fair-skinned, with a well-proportioned figure, an oval face, and shoulder-length hair—she appeared sweet and demure. Hearing that Old Bi was a nurse surprised me; I never imagined a nurse would go out partying at a bar. Oh Old Bi, you’ve really gotten yourself into something! I mused for a moment before inviting the girls to sit on one side so that Old Bi could sit next to me for convenience while drinking.
There’s a saying that three women make a play, and it proved true; the three girls sitting together were chattering away excitedly. Aside from Swallow, Moya and Lulu were particularly lively, laughing happily without a care about what they were discussing.
I chatted idly with Old Bi when Zhang Xing and Big Yellow arrived one after another. Zhang Xing had seen Old Bi at the hospital but hadn’t met him since then; however, they knew each other well enough. He approached and threw a punch at Old Bi. Old Bi dodged it skillfully, defusing the situation while the girls looked on in shock; Lulu even stood up in fright, probably thinking there was trouble brewing. I quickly intervened between them and the girls saying, "It's fine! It's fine! Just friends! This is Zhang Xing, a martial arts instructor from the armed police." Once the girls understood what was happening, they clearly lost interest and returned to their own conversation.
When Big Yellow arrived just as Zhang Xing sat down, I hurriedly called him over and introduced him again while emphasizing Big Yellow's unparalleled marksmanship. To my surprise, the girls remained indifferent and continued their chatter without interruption. Meanwhile, Big Yellow was staring intently at Moya; I secretly smiled to myself—there might still be hope—and quickly called for the waiter to bring out the food.
Once all the dishes were served, looking around at everyone at the table made me feel unexpectedly good. In less than a year since coming to this place, I had made my own friends and found my circle; it gave me a sense of accomplishment. Suddenly feeling like having some drinks despite not being able to hold my liquor well, I ordered several bottles of Erguotou and stood up to say, "Everyone here has been in this city longer than I have; it’s fate that we can meet as brothers and sisters. I'm back from vacation today; let’s gather together to celebrate our friendship!"
At my cue, Old Bi, Zhang Xing, and Big Yellow all raised their glasses and shouted together, "One two three, cheers!" Down went a full glass! At first, I thought everyone would be more reserved with girls around; however, as we went around clinking glasses again and again, everyone dove right into it. Zhang Xing pulled Big Yellow into drinking contests because he didn’t believe Big Yellow's marksmanship could surpass his own; Big Yellow kept glancing at Xiao Mo Ya trying to strike up a conversation but didn’t know how; Xiao Mo Ya had already drunk too much and was fully displaying her “tomboy” nature by insisting on getting Old Bi drunk as revenge for past grievances; Old Bi had one hand being pulled by Xiao Mo Ya while his other ear was tugged by Lulu as he grimaced but continued drinking.
Swallow sat there with her arms crossed coldly observing Big Yellow and Zhang Xing stirring up trouble with their drinking games. As the host of the gathering, I couldn’t let her feel awkward alone either; so I walked over with my drink saying to her, "Swallow, you’re Moya’s friend as well as ours; here’s to you—let’s toast with some juice." To my surprise, Swallow remained unmoved in her seat and coldly replied, "I’m not used to noisy environments or clinking glasses with people. By the way, it seems you’re quite skeptical about Moya’s words?"
Talk about hitting the nail on the head! I chuckled awkwardly twice before saying, "Alright then; if you don’t want to drink that’s fine." Turning back towards my seat when Moya returned mumbling something that indicated she had drunk quite a bit.
Before I could respond further, Big Yellow finally broke free from Zhang Xing's grasp and came over asking loudly, "What dream? Is it about me?" Big Yellow had an impressive tolerance for alcohol and became noticeably more talkative after drinking—he was like a different person compared to his usual self. Well then! If Big Yellow could win over Moya's heart then I'd be off the hook! So I quietly returned to my spot letting them develop their own dynamic.
"Not you, it's Sister Yuyan. She often has dreams related to the people around her, and many of them are quite accurate," Xiao Mo Ya seemed a bit dazed. "Really? Is it that amazing?"
"Don't you believe it?" The two of them were almost huddled together.
"I know that during the Song Dynasty, there was a man named Shen Kuo who, at a young age, frequently dreamed of a beautiful courtyard. Ten years later, he moved to Xuancheng. Someone told him there was a particularly lovely courtyard nearby. Without hesitation, he spent a fortune to buy it. After some time, when he went to check on the courtyard and pushed the door open, he was astonished to find it was exactly the one he had dreamed about for so long."
"That’s just a coincidence! Sister Yuyan has all sorts of dreams!"
"Sister, let me tell you, there are many different opinions on interpreting predictive dreams nowadays. The first is their coincidental nature; perhaps during some activity, you dreamt something that happened to coincide with reality, including events involving death. We encounter thousands of things in our lives, and occasionally experiencing such coincidences is possible. The second explanation is that your psychological state aligns perfectly with reality; it's not coincidence but alignment. Many dreams we think are prophetic are not actually so. However, if something happens to align perfectly with a past dream, people tend to interpret it as fulfillment. It’s also possible that through past experiences—reading books or receiving information from others—one has formed an image in their mind that isn't very clear. But when they happen upon that place later, it closely matches their psychological needs at that moment, leading them to connect it with their past dreams. The details in dreams about where a tree or house is may not be very precise but can feel accurate. Just like our Peach Blossom Spring; he saw that place but must have encountered information about it in his past knowledge and experiences that closely resembled it. When he sees it now, he believes it's the place he once pursued in his dreams. These two explanations at least provide modern psychologists with a more scientifically acceptable interpretation."
No wonder someone who studied psychology could understand Big Yellow's secret; bringing it up now was clearly timely. I didn’t expect Big Yellow to be so insightful after having a drink. "Big Yellow, your analysis helped me," I quietly raised my glass for another sip.
Xiao Mo Ya seemed equally captivated and looked up with dazed eyes at Swallow. "Sister, it seems like there might be some truth to this."
Unexpectedly, Swallow reacted strongly; she stood up and walked away while muttering something incomprehensible: "This friend must be talking about the people around you."
(To be continued; tomorrow will be even more exciting!)
