Everyone was looking at Dai Liu, bewildered. Could it be true? Did he really kill himself? It seemed like everyone wore a confused expression, and then Dai Liu chuckled, "It's puzzling, isn't it? The most important thing about being a detective is to have imagination!"
Dai Liu leaned forward and opened the notebook on the table, glancing through it as he spoke. "Qi killed herself, but it wasn't suicide! There are several key points worth noting. First, if Xiao Ye was sleepwalking when he committed the murder, where did he find the knife? According to the Miao Method, only Qi knew where the knife was hidden. This place is likely her room, which is their bedroom. Xiao Ye couldn't possibly find the knife in a sleepwalking state and then kill Qi; that explanation is too far-fetched. The second point: I don't know if you've investigated Ling Yun's family background, but I've looked into Ling Yun and his partner. What interests me is that Ling Yun and his partner don't seem to have a good relationship. When I spoke with Ling Yun's partner, I learned that they are currently separated. Ling Yun is living at his workplace while his partner stays at home alone. They often argued before separating, mainly due to issues regarding children. Ling Yun's partner cannot conceive due to health reasons, which has troubled Ling Yun. However, he has refrained from expressing any other thoughts because of his wife's family influence. By the way, Ling Yun's father-in-law is a key leader in my City Health Bureau."
At this point, Dai Liu paused and scanned everyone's faces. "During my questioning, Ling Yun deliberately avoided discussing personal matters when I asked him about them. What does that imply?"
"…"
Everyone was clearly still pondering Dai Liu's words when he turned to me. "There's a crucial piece of information I need to share." Dai Liu pulled out a plastic bag from his notebook containing a hospital examination report. "Take a look at this; I found it inside the cover of the deceased's notebook. This is an examination result from just before Qi's death—a blood hg test—and the result is positive, meaning Qi was pregnant at the time of her death!"
My heart raced; this detail wasn't mentioned in the autopsy report. Dai Liu shot me a glance and continued, "According to medical experts I've consulted, a blood hg test can confirm early pregnancy ten days after sexual activity; it's currently the earliest and most accurate method of testing. Perhaps it was too early for the forensic expert and the responsible comrade to catch this detail; I've already instructed them to recheck this."
"From previous inquiries, Xiao Ye has admitted that due to his inability to have children, they have not had any kids together. Interestingly enough, this examination took place at the First People's Hospital in the city around the same time that communication between Ling Yun and Qi suddenly intensified. At the same time, hospital records indicate that Qi began visiting Ling Yun more frequently. What can we infer from this? Whose child could it be? The answer seems clear."
"When we connect these three points, we can draw the following conclusion: Due to their lack of children and a dull marriage life, Qi gradually became attracted to Ling Yun after meeting him. Since Ling Yun studies psychology, he had his own methods for dealing with Qi's introverted nature. Additionally, having faced similar experiences, Qi slowly realized she had fallen for this doctor. A woman may initially seek emotional connection without wanting marriage when she submits herself to a man she admires; however, as feelings develop further, what she desires most—while being what men least want to give—is actually a title: not as a lover but as a wife. Moreover, since Qi was pregnant with Ling Yun's child, she ultimately decided to eliminate Xiao Ye. The best opportunity arose when Xiao Ye was sleepwalking; she could place the hidden knife in his hand and create the illusion that he would kill her during one of his episodes. Then she could claim self-defense for killing Xiao Ye without facing any criminal responsibility while gaining access to his assets and freedom—allowing her to live openly with Ling Yun afterward. In the worst-case scenario, she could feign injury or other circumstances to buy time by sending Xiao Ye into psychiatric care under the pretext of severe mental illness. This explains why Qi has been urging Xiao Ye to take sleeping pills prescribed by the hospital before bed; it could stimulate sleepwalking episodes."
I felt like I was beginning to understand when Dai Liu continued: "So that knife was also prepared by Qi in advance; however, she never expected that she would accidentally be killed by Xiao Ye while he was sleepwalking."
Dai Liu smiled ambiguously and fell silent.
Old Li suddenly interjected, "So what role does Ling Yun play in all of this?"
Dai Liu replied, "Good question! Ling Yun is very cautious and calculating; you can see that from his call records and personal behavior. I don't believe he was completely unaware of what happened; it's highly likely he was waiting for things to unfold. If Xiao Ye were killed by Qi under self-defense claims, he could wait for Qi to go through legal proceedings and receive a large sum of money before confidently divorcing his wife and eloping with Qi. Even if Qi failed in her plan, he could still have Xiao Ye committed under treatment for mental illness—buying time for future plans."
"But these are just inferences; we don't have concrete evidence," I chimed in.
"Now we need to see how Xiao Ye and Ling Yun perform," Dai Liu said with an enigmatic smile as he prepared for their interrogation.
This situation just keeps getting more complicated, I heard Old Li mutter.
During Xiao Ye's interrogation, aside from written records, audio recording was also initiated for evidence collection; this time Dai Liu was leading the questioning while asking me to take notes.
Xiao Ye's expression remained weary and despondent. When he looked up at us, there was no spark in his eyes. Before I could ask him anything, he bitterly said, "Officer, I killed Qi. I confess; you don't need to interrogate me anymore. Just take me to be sentenced."
I replied, "Even if we are going to convict you, there are still some questions that need to be clarified; otherwise, the procedure won't hold up."
Dai Liu ignored this and directly asked, "Xiao Ye, did you know your wife is pregnant?"
Xiao Ye's head shot up, shock written all over his face. "How could that be?" he blurted out.
"The examination confirmed it. Do we need to show you the evidence? Currently, we have reason to suspect that your wife wanted to use your sleepwalking as a cover to eliminate you and start a new life."
I noticed Xiao Ye's eyes lit up for a moment before returning to normal. After a while, he said, "I knew she was having an affair, but I couldn't believe she was that kind of person who would do something like this." He lowered his gaze.
"How much do you know about the affair?"
"I loved her very much and listened to her. So when she asked me to undergo therapy a year ago, I went with her. I never expected that it would change her life; I regret it so much."
Xiao Ye gritted his teeth. "Actually, I didn't know at first. But then an anonymous letter arrived in my hands with photos of Qi and that man caught in compromising situations. It looked like they were taken from a video. The background was blurry, but Qi's image was very clear. The letter also mentioned that the person was a private investigator and that my wife was seducing other men. If I wanted to know more, I could contact them. But when I called the number provided, it turned out to be disconnected."
"Did you find out who this person was?"
"At first, I couldn't find any leads. Qi lived a simple life; apart from accompanying me to therapy, she stayed at home. Later, during one session, for some reason after hypnosis, I didn't fall asleep completely and vaguely heard some conversations between Qi and Ling Yun. That’s when I realized that man was Ling Yun!" Xiao Ye said bitterly.
"It’s not true that I don’t hate Qi; but after thinking it over, I realized I still love her very much. Besides, I knew having our child would also hurt her, so I didn’t want to expose everything or tear our relationship apart. I wanted to keep her; after all, there was Miao at home too. So I tried talking to her several times, but she wouldn’t say anything and remained silent. The night before the incident, I told her that I wouldn’t go out to work for a while or continue therapy; I'd stay home with her instead. She agreed to my request, but unexpectedly this seemed to trigger her into taking such extreme measures."
Xiao Ye buried his head deep between his legs with his hands clasped over it. Dai Liu pondered for a long time before turning to Old Li beside him: "Next, I'll talk with Ling Yun. You take him to another interrogation room and wait for us there."
When Ling Yun entered the room, he appeared calm and composed as always. After he sat down, Dai Liu suddenly asked him, "How long have you been with Qi?"
Ling Yun slowly raised his head and smiled slightly. "Officer, I'm not sure what you're referring to."
"Stop pretending. Xiao Ye overheard your conversation during a treatment session and knows about your relationship."
"So what?" Ling Yun leaned back against the chair.
"Qi is pregnant with your child. She must have told you and confronted you about it. On one hand, you lack the ability and courage to break free from your current family; on the other hand, you know you can't escape Qi's entanglement. So, you deliberately told her this method. If Xiao Ye were to die or if Qi ended up in a mental hospital, you could choose to leave cleanly and be with Qi, having money, children, and the life you desire, right?"
Ling Yun remained silent, but his expression was clearly no longer as relaxed as before. "That's all speculation on your part. I admit I had an affair with Qi; at most, I am morally corrupt for developing feelings with a patient's family member, but I do not acknowledge the rest."
"Ling Yun Doctor, I'm not finished yet. You prepared another outcome for yourself, didn't you? You took photos and sent them to Xiao Ye, didn't you? The purpose was to provoke Xiao Ye into hating Qi. If Xiao Ye truly is sleepwalking, he might accidentally kill Qi. I even suspect that you incorporated psychological suggestions into Xiao Ye's hypnosis treatment. That way, if Qi dies, all your problems would be solved!"
Ling Yun visibly panicked. "These are just your assumptions! Do you have any evidence?"
Dai Liu slowly pulled a tape from the drawer and waved it. "This is what I found in your office suite. It contains footage from the surveillance you set up; your photos were screen-captured from here, weren't they?"
"You are very cautious; you never discussed anything deeply with Qi over the phone or through texts, so you could only talk to her in person. But this recorded all your plans."
Ling Yun suddenly became agitated. "Impossible! I took all the tapes to be erased! You won't have any evidence!"
I exchanged glances with my co-examiner; it seemed this was indeed the case! Ling Yun was far too cunning! Dai Liu continued, "Modern technology is advanced; recovering data isn't difficult at all. Ling Yun, do you want me to play the tape for you or will you confess yourself?"
Ling Yun's gaze flickered for a long time before finally dimming. "Fine, I will." Dai Liu immediately signaled me to take notes.
"When Xiao Ye came for treatment with his wife Qi, I knew then that an opportunity to change my fate had arrived. She was wealthy and beautiful, innocent and soft-hearted, emotionally fragile as well. Plus, her husband was infertile and their family life was unhappy. I tried my best to get close to her, using our similar experiences to touch her heart and make her fall in love with me."
"My initial plan was to send Xiao Ye to a mental hospital, then divorce both Qi and Xiao Ye before marrying her again. With Qi's money as my backing, I wouldn't have to fear my father-in-law's family influence."
"I never expected Qi would become pregnant. When she told me, I felt like there was no turning back; I might as well go all out and eliminate Xiao Ye. That way, everything he had would be mine!" Ling Yun's eyes were now filled with fervor.
"So I prepared sleeping pills for Qi to give him. I also knew that Xiao Ye had been taking medication for infertility treatment. The night before, I had Qi sleep with him—first to exhaust Xiao Ye so that Qi could easily take advantage of him; second, if the plan failed and Qi hesitated or if Xiao Ye resisted and she couldn't go through with it later on, we could align the pregnancy date so he wouldn't suspect the child's origins."
Everything was under Ling Yun's control. This Ling Yun was truly terrifying, and I felt a wave of sorrow for Qi.
"Is there anything else?" "No." "Take him down, and bring Xiao Ye back in!" Seizing this opportunity, I quietly asked Dai Liu, "If there's a videotape that can directly convict him, why ask more questions?" Dai Liu gritted his teeth and whispered, "That tape is blank. When I went to Ling Yun's office, all the tapes were empty!" Ah, Dai Liu was playing tricks! It was strange, though; why was Dai Liu still interrogating Xiao Ye?
Just as I was pondering this, Xiao Ye was brought in and sat down in front of us.
Dai Liu smiled at him. "The reason we've called you here is to tell you two things."
Xiao Ye asked, "What are they?"
Dai Liu replied, "The first thing is regarding Qi's death. The murderer who killed Qi is indeed you; we have confirmed this."
Xiao Ye's gaze flickered slightly but quickly returned to normal.
We all looked at Dai Liu in astonishment. Dai Liu's voice suddenly turned stern. "However, there is one point that differs from your claim: you did not kill in your sleep; it was a premeditated murder!"
(To be continued; look forward to more excitement tomorrow!)
