Soon, two meals had passed. My stomach ached from hunger as I curled up on the ground. Tong Ming was even more pleased with himself, urging me from the side.
"It's just a contract. If you sign it, it's over," he said. "Why do you have to make things difficult for yourself?"
I shot him a cold glance but remained silent. However, in my mind, I had already begun a countdown. Just as Tong Ming reached out toward me, a loud crash echoed through the air. The warehouse door was flung open, blinding light pouring in and making it hard for me to open my eyes.
Then, I heard Tong Ming's piercing scream. Suddenly, someone wrapped their arms around me.
"Liu Qianqian!"
I opened my eyes in surprise to find Lin Mingyuan standing before me.
"Lin Mingyuan, what are you doing here?"
He held me tightly, his eyes filled with concern.
"If I don't come, who will save you?"
"Are you hurt?"
I shook my head, feeling nothing but hunger gnawing at me.
"I'm so hungry."
"Is there anything to eat?"
Lin Mingyuan nodded quickly. "Yes, yes." He took out some pastries for me to nibble on. I couldn't care less about being polite and devoured them ravenously.
Lin Mingyuan watched me, a hint of pain flickering in his eyes.
"Slow down; don't choke."
I nodded and continued to eat with fervor. Once I was finally full, I felt like I had come back to life. I let out a sigh and looked at Lin Mingyuan.
"Thank you."
"If it weren't for you, I would have been in big trouble this time," he replied, shaking his head. "I came too late and let you suffer."
I waved my hand dismissively. "It has nothing to do with you."
"That Tong Ming is really twisted," Lin Mingyuan said, looking at me with a serious expression.
"He's so eager for money; there must be something wrong."
I was slightly taken aback.
That's true. Although Tong Ming used to be greedy, he had never gone this far. What on earth happened to him that made him so desperate? I decided I needed to get to the bottom of this. And this time, I wouldn't hold back. Tong Ming had crossed the line.
Amidst Tong Ming's mother's screams and curses, Lin Mingyuan and I left the warehouse.
By the time we returned to the city, it was already three in the morning. Lin Mingyuan was worried about my safety and planned to send someone to protect me. I knew he was concerned about Tong Ming going crazy again. After thinking it over, I didn't refuse. After all, I was worried about my own life too.
Lin Mingyuan took me to a porridge shop to fill our stomachs.
"You just had a stomach issue; you shouldn't eat greasy food," he said. "Drink some porridge to warm your stomach."
I felt a warmth in my heart as I looked at him and nodded slightly. "Thank you."
Lin Mingyuan shot me a glance. "Why are you being polite with me?"
I smiled and didn't say much more.
While waiting for our food, I couldn't help but laugh at Lin Mingyuan's still tense posture.
"Alright, I'm fine now," I reassured him. "Don't worry."
He glanced at me, his brow furrowed tightly.
"I didn't expect that after two years apart, your temper has gotten worse."
"Why are you still wasting time with someone like him?"
"If you had told me earlier, I would have helped you solve it."
I smiled but remained silent. In the past, I didn't want to trouble him; after all, he had already helped me so much. But after this incident, I thought maybe there were some things he should know.
"Let's go; I'll take you home."
"Lin Mingyuan, take me home," I said, and on the way, he helped me ask for leave.
"Make sure to rest well at home."
"If anything comes up, just call me."
I nodded, looking at the concern in his eyes, feeling a slight stir in my heart.
Perhaps it was because I had just gone through a dangerous experience; seeing someone who cared for me made me feel an undeniable sense of reliance.
After I finished showering, I thought that since I had taken leave, I might as well get a good sleep. However, as soon as I opened my phone, I was stunned by an overwhelming flood of messages.
"Lin Mingyuan is actually the heir of a Fortune 500 company!"
I stared at the messages, unable to process what I was reading for a long time. So when he said before that his family was similar to mine, this was what he meant? I scratched my head, feeling both amused and bewildered. So he had been afraid of startling me and hadn’t told me the truth?
I shook my head and didn’t dwell on it any longer. Regardless of whether he was the heir of a conglomerate or a beggar on the street, he was still that neighborly brother who had taken care of me for many years.
The next morning, I was awakened by the sound of moving. When I went outside to check, I was surprised to find Lin Mingyuan there.
"What are you doing?"
Lin Mingyuan turned to look at me with a serious expression.
"Moving."
"Huh?"
I was completely bewildered.
