When Igneel and the other dragons died, the news hit you hard. You sighed, realizing that these dragons could have been humanity's best companions, dedicating everything they had from birth to death without hesitation. The armor returned, storing nine pieces of Dragon Slayer Magic's Magic Crystals, eight from Celestia, and one from the Emerald Dragon. The other five seemed to have already perished long ago; they were merely souls attached to several Dragon Slayer Mages, hence lacking any Magic Crystals.
"I never expected that even they couldn't handle Acnologia..."
Newton sighed. The truth was, their strength was already very close; Acnologia had been severely beaten.
"If only we had one more dragon..."
"That's impossible."
A figure who should not have been there at all, Jelf, sat before Newton, gazing nostalgically at Mavis.
"It’s been a long time, Mavis."
"I didn't expect to see you again under these circumstances."
Mavis felt quite complicated about their past... and now...
"Did you come here to ambush us directly?"
Newton was already prepared for battle, aware that he might not stand a chance against this emperor.
"Yes, that was my intention."
Jelf waved his hand, and dark magic shattered the armor Newton had just donned.
"Stop with these useless tricks. Under absolute power, any of your methods are futile."
Jelf settled back in his seat.
"I think you’ve seen Acnologia's strength. That level is not something we can deal with alone; a single nation cannot..."
"So what can you do?"
Newton scoffed.
"I can't either..."
Jelf shook his head, stopping Newton from continuing. He revealed a shocking piece of information that left Newton stunned.
"But there are two of me?"
"What... do you mean?"
Newton looked at Mavis.
"Let me tell you our story. I once had a brother, but he was very weak and passed away shortly after birth. In order to bring him back to life, I chose to explore the nature of life itself. The result was that my research angered the gods, leading to a curse. The essence of this curse is that the more I cherish life, the faster those around me will perish."
"The demons are merely creations you made in an attempt to resurrect your brother. Natsu... he must be your brother, right? But what does this have to do with Mavis?"
Newton was beginning to connect more and more dots, but the more he learned, the more questions arose.
"What does this have to do with the Dragon Slayer Mage?"
"Well, you sure have a lot of questions. Could you get me a glass of water? I'm feeling a bit thirsty."
Newton paused for a moment before asking Ginger to pour a glass of water. After Jelf drank it, he let out a long sigh and began to share his story.
"Let me start by answering your first question. I came to this continent in hopes of lifting my curse, and it was here that I met Mavis. We fell in love, but I never expected that this would mark the beginning of our tragedy. I thought that being with Mavis meant that nothing would go wrong and that the curse had been lifted..."
"But it was merely a transfer or an expansion of the curse..."
This also explained why Mavis was immortal as well; two immortals together might truly be able to defeat Acnologia.
"Wait a minute, how do you plan to utilize the power of the First Generation?"
Newton couldn't believe that Jelf simply intended to resurrect the First Generation and fight together. If it were that simple, then why had the First Generation ended up in such a state?
"It's simple. I will absorb this power and then use it to fight Acnologia to the death."
"So First Generation will die as well, right?" Newton said with a grim expression.
"Then why don't you contribute your own power?"
"Because only I can absorb it most appropriately. This power has spread because of me. Even so, I don't know if I can defeat Acnologia. If Mavis absorbs it, the odds will be even lower."
It made sense, but Newton was not the kind of person who could watch his elder sacrifice themselves. However, he still wanted to understand more.
"What about the Dragon Clan? What does that have to do with this?"
You wouldn't believe it was just because Natsu is Jelf's brother.
"When I discussed magic with Igneel, we already speculated that Acnologia was a threat. His existence poses a danger to this world. At that time, no one could stand against Acnologia. You might think he seems strong now, but compared to hundreds of years ago, he is much stronger. The Demon Dragon cannot consume just any magic; it is specifically the Dragon Slayer magic that can increase Acnologia's power. The dragons from hundreds of years ago were the best remedy for him. We anticipated the extinction of the Dragon Clan, so we used the Eclipse Gate to send five Dragon Slayer Mages to this era, and the dragons also left behind contingency plans."
Jelf sighed.
"Acnologia's almost pathological desire to kill dragons stems from this fact. However, the more he kills, the more he becomes a being that knows only destruction and slaughter. This time, I must kill him."
"Why didn't you go back then? A few dragons could have fought Acnologia. If you had gone, you might have been able to keep Acnologia there!"
Newton was quite displeased; this guy didn't join in the fight earlier but now came back for a battle—what kind of logic was that?
"It would have been useless. Only by merging with Mavis's power do I have a guaranteed chance of victory."
"If every fight had to be a guaranteed win, then what's the point of fighting? Just make the opponent surrender directly! I think you're just scared stiff by Acnologia."
"I don't care what you think; I will definitely take Mavis with me."
A massive surge of magic power emanated from Jelf.
"Dammit, if we can't win, we have to fight anyway."
The surrounding environment began to pulse irregularly, as if it had a life of its own.
"Enough!"
Mavis suddenly shouted at the two.
"I'm going with you."
Mavis directed her words at Jelf.
"First Generation!?"
Newton felt a bit flustered, but Mavis shook her head.
"I've thought it through. I was already dead; what does it matter if I sacrifice myself for you guys? Alright, I'll take him to my body, and you don't need to follow."
Newton felt a slight itch in his teeth as he watched Jelf take Mavis away from here.
