“Then what should we do about the Witch's Sin?”
The final question circled back, one that could not be avoided no matter how hard they tried.
“How about we jointly protect them?” One Night suggested.
“Uncle, I’m already planning to take the blame myself. Do you think it’s not enough for me to bear it alone?” Newton felt a headache coming on. This situation was similar to his own; once discovered, it would be a significant blow to the reputation of various Guilds. It wasn't just ordinary people; even many Mages had grudges against those involved with the Witch's Sin. If they were to directly shelter them, it would cause considerable turmoil within the Mage community as well.
“Then should we just let them escape?”
That was also a good option. Although anyone with a discerning eye would see through it, the principle of "the law does not punish the many" applied here since so many Guilds were involved.
“It seems we have no choice but to do that.”
Newton nodded; this was indeed what he had been thinking as well. It was the best outcome they could hope for.
“I’ll go talk to the people from the kingdom to avoid any conflict between us.”
“Wait.”
As Newton prepared to leave, the President of Serpent Empress's Scale called out to him.
“Mr. Newton, although it may not be appropriate to ask this now, I still want to know what your relationship is with the Dark Guild?”
It was important to note that those involved with the Witch's Sin were all part of the Dark Guild, and many members had come to help this time. Without a mediator, who would believe them? Moreover, it seemed that there wasn’t a mediator from the Witch's Sin; thus, who had contributed the most in this war? Undoubtedly, it was the person standing before them.
Everyone else looked at Newton as well. The Dark Guild was a taboo; while encountering them didn’t guarantee death, their influence was immense.
Newton was contemplating whether to reveal his connections. Although the individuals before him could be considered allies, it was always wise to keep some cards close to his chest.
"I know Ugly."
The armor had already been exposed, and rather than refuting it, it was better to admit it openly; otherwise, it would only draw more suspicion. However, this admission required some finesse. For instance, knowing Ugly was one thing, but being Ugly himself was an entirely different concept. Knowing someone could imply they were merely acquaintances, but if a member of the Regular Guild were to lead the Dark Guild, what would that mean? Was he planning to use the Dark Guild to undermine them? Could it be that a previous battle had been lost because Newton had leaked information? These were all valid concerns.
Although Newton knew Ugly now, everyone instinctively believed that he only had business dealings with him and had not betrayed anyone's secrets. Even if there were suspicions, the group shifted their focus elsewhere. Moreover, if communication with the Dark Guild was possible, it could serve as a valuable asset for them.
"Then, Newton, can you talk to Ugly?"
Immediately, someone wondered if they could gain any advantages from the Dark Guild.
"I can, but I advise you not to think too much about it. That guy Ugly is dangerous—not in a lethal sense—but you can never really understand what he's thinking. Collaborating with him is like trying to skin a tiger; be prepared for betrayal."
Newton tried to demonize Ugly as much as possible since Ugly was essentially himself. He worried about whether some magical means could directly reveal his identity. If exposed and combined with his earlier denial, these individuals might speculate even more.
"How could that be? We were thinking if we could have Ugly lead the Dark Guild to cause less trouble. Although the Dark Guild's threat has diminished, our economic losses and reputational damage each year are significant."
They didn't expect Ugly or the Dark Guild members to change their ways entirely; they simply hoped for a reduction in their workload.
"Alright, I will talk to Ugly."
Newton was well aware of Ugly's actions over the years; after all, he had orchestrated them. While he didn't intend to completely destroy the Regular Guild, causing some losses and profiting from both sides during conflicts was something Newton welcomed. However, having this brought up made him feel somewhat awkward.
It seemed there were no issues on the Dark Guild's side; now the pressing concern was the casualties within his own guild.
"So, how are your guild's casualties?"
As soon as Newton spoke, all the guild presidents turned their attention toward him. They had hoped to bypass this issue, but Newton appeared determined to shoulder this burden as well.
"Newton, we appreciate your willingness to help us, but how much can one guild contribute? This is our guild's matter; we don't need your assistance."
One Night interrupted Newton, but then he caught One Night's gaze.
"Ah, how much money do you have? I could probably buy out several Guilds present here without any issue."
Newton's words immediately silenced everyone. Even Makarov was taken aback by the revelation of Newton's wealth; the idea of buying multiple Guilds was simply outrageous.
"Wait, how can you be this rich?"
Minerva suddenly felt a strong urge to cling to this wealthy individual.
"Do you have any idea how much profit a Guild can bring me in a year? No, the cash I currently have on hand, along with some rare metal materials and the armor I've crafted, which can't be converted into cash, could probably cover the cost of a few Guilds. Moreover, anything that money can solve isn't a problem for me. In fact, if I could gather enough materials to create more Gundams—those Puppets that can fight against dragons—I could even single-handedly form an army capable of wiping out a dragon."
At this point, everyone truly understood just how wealthy this person was, and the fact that he had the strength to protect that wealth made him even more intimidating.
With that realization, no one had any objections left. They all accepted Newton's generous offer; after all, free money is free money.
With those matters settled, Newton headed toward the palace. The issues with the Guilds were resolved, but there was still a mountain of problems waiting for him at the palace. He needed to discuss how to take responsibility with the kingdom.
"Tsk, what a pile of troublesome matters," Newton muttered as he scratched his head and walked into what was almost a ruin of a palace.
