“Is everything alright, Wendy?”
Newton had already changed back to his own face in the underground cavern, as per Miraj's request, since this face was indeed more pleasing to the eye.
He never expected to find such a place beneath the arena. The numerous Dragon Bones resembled the legendary elephant graveyards of his world; a single rib was almost as long as a spear, and there was that massive dragon head. As soon as Newton entered, he began to look around. This was undoubtedly the Dragon Tomb, and the bones of the dragons appeared to be ancient.
“At least these bones have been here for several hundred years, Wendy. Is everything okay?”
Newton looked at Wendy. Although he could communicate with the souls of the deceased through the essence of the Dragon Slayer Magic known as Galaxy, it had been hundreds of years. Could there really be any remnants of souls left?
“I'll give it a try…”
Wendy wasn't entirely sure either. Although mastering Galaxy was much faster for her than breaking through space due to its high difficulty compared to other attack spells, she shared Newton's concern about the passage of time. Even Wendy couldn't be certain if any souls remained.
But despite her worries, they had to proceed. Newton and the others stood guard around Wendy while she activated the magic of Galaxy within the cavern. A gentle light illuminated the area, and everyone present felt as if their souls were being healed.
A phantom gradually became more solid, revealing a body with a fierce visage and emerald-like Dragon Scales. However, its eyes were devoid of life. Just a moment later, a roar echoed from ancient times, sending tremors through everyone present—a sensation deep within their souls, a feeling suppressed and hunted from their very bloodline.
“Is scaring people really that fun?”
Newton felt little impact from the spectacle. If given a choice, he preferred the elegance of Chinese dragons; those graceful beings deserved his respect. After all, the giant dragon before him was merely a soul.
“I find it quite interesting! But you surprise me; I truly didn't know when humans grew so bold as to converse with me without fear. Ah, though it's not exactly face-to-face; I am but a soul now. So where is that human?”
To Newton's surprise, the dragon was quite talkative. Its opening words made him feel that this dragon seemed rather amiable.
“Is this girl here? She’s quite adorable! One would never guess she could slay dragons like me—though it has always been like this with dragons…”
The dragon squinted at Wendy.
“We sincerely apologize for summoning you this time; however, we do have some questions we wish to ask you.”
Natsu originally wanted to prevent that dragon from getting too close to Wendy, but he was stopped by Newton. After all, the entity summoned was merely a soul; even if it wanted to do something, it couldn't. Moreover, its soul was summoned by Wendy's magic, so if it could truly harm anyone, Wendy would likely be the safest among them.
"Why should I tell humans anything? I really dislike humans."
The dragon turned its head away in annoyance.
"But we're cats, so it's fine, right?"
Haru instinctively made a sarcastic remark, but unexpectedly, the dragon turned its head back around.
"That's true. So what do you want to ask?"
Everyone suddenly felt that their image of dragons had been shattered because of Acnologia. Even though Natsu and the others were raised by dragons, this was their first encounter with such an unreliable dragon.
"Hello, my first question is: what exactly is Acnologia?"
"Child, where did you hear that name…"
The dragon's expression suddenly turned extremely grim.
"Is that guy still alive? But then again, how could someone like him die so easily…"
Then, as if recalling some unpleasant memories, the dragon slowly began to speak.
"I will tell you everything. My name is Gildarts, known as the Emerald Dragon. Your Acnologia was recognized as the Dragon King four hundred years ago, but he was originally a human…"
Everyone was astonished; only Newton seemed unsurprised, as this merely confirmed something for him.
"So using Dragon Slayer Magic too much really does turn one into a dragon?"
Gildarts looked at Newton with some surprise.
"That's right. Back then, dragons ruled this world, but some dragons wanted to coexist peacefully with humans and handed Dragon Slayer Magic over to them. Who could have imagined that humans would betray us and start slaughtering dragons? One of them became tainted with too much dragon blood; his skin began to grow scales… dull teeth turned into sharp fangs… he transformed into a dragon. Though he was human, he became the Dragon King—he is Acnologia… and this Dragon Tomb is where the slain dragons once lay…"
However, as the conversation continued, Gildarts' soul began to fade, and Newton sensed that something was wrong.
"Alchemy! Transmute the body!"
A Philosopher's Stone in Newton's hand emitted an eerie red glow. He felt the Gate of Truth within him start to draw a significant amount of energy from the Philosopher's Stone. If it were just a human body, it would have been simple, but this time, even for a dragon, it was not so easy. Moreover, this soul had endured four hundred years of history; time had taken its toll, and the soul was already quite weak. Newton also needed to use Alchemy to repair the other’s soul.
However, souls were always a taboo in Alchemy, and the most critical issue was that the conversion rate during soul repair was too low. The single portion of Philosopher's Stone in Newton's hand quickly shattered. In the end, he used one single portion, one ten-person portion, and one hundred-person portion of Philosopher's Stone before he finally stabilized the dragon's soul.
"Child, what kind of technique is this?"
Gildarts was somewhat astonished; this was akin to resurrecting the dead, which seemed incredibly unbelievable. Even back in their day, the dragon clan had never managed to create such terrifying magic.
"Alchemy..."
Newton looked at the dragon in his hands. Although it appeared no different from a dragon, there were still differences. After all, Newton himself did not know what constituted a dragon's body. The bones were straightforward; he could simply use Dragon Bone nearby. However, for the body—whether flesh or scales—Newton could only manage to create something barely passable, which would certainly differ from the legendary Dragon Scales.
Although he had consumed three Philosopher's Stones, Newton felt he had gained immensely.
"Alright, now we can slowly return and have a good talk with this Emerald Dragon..."
