The battle of the day had ended, but it was night that marked the beginning of Marlon's actions. At that moment, Wendy approached Marlon.
“Marlon, no, Mr. Newton…”
Wendy looked at Marlon.
“Am I really that useless?”
Marlon felt helpless. He was merely a doctor with a false identity, not a real physician. It was puzzling that someone with psychological issues would come to him for help. Nevertheless, he was part of a guild, and the gentle and adorable Wendy was someone everyone liked. Many took care of her as if she were a younger sister. Not to mention, Marlon was nearing thirty, which made him feel somewhat akin to Kildas and Kana in their dynamic.
“How could you think that?”
Marlon sighed helplessly.
“You're already doing great. Look at Gray and Lucy; they both lost. Even Natsu and Gajeel didn’t perform well. Together, they didn’t score as much as you did alone.”
“Ugh!”
A few members at the Fairy Tail base sneezed simultaneously and inexplicably felt annoyed.
“But Sherria and I didn’t win our battle, and I can sense that if Joan keeps fighting like this, I won’t have the upper hand. My magic isn’t stronger than Sherria’s; in fact, my recovery ability is even weaker than hers…”
Beside them, Sharlulu looked at Marlon with dissatisfaction, feeling equally helpless.
Marlon felt increasingly helpless. "Sharlulu, why are you glaring at me? I haven't bullied Girl."
"That's true, but Wendy, you've misunderstood something. In reality, there is no clear definition of strength among magic."
Marlon began his psychological guidance.
"When two mages have similar levels of magic, the nature of their magic can determine the outcome. However, when there is a significant gap in magical power, that becomes irrelevant. Besides that, another crucial factor in the strength of magic is the heart. A simple example is Natsu; he has fought many opponents, including Laxus and the Fire Dragon Slayer Mage. Logically, Natsu should only be able to consume flames, and he shouldn't be able to handle Laxus's lightning or the flames of the Dragon Slayer. Yet, in reality, Natsu perfectly absorbed those powers. Every Mage possesses immense potential; all we need is the inner strength to unleash that power."
At this point, Marlon smiled.
"And about your battle with Sherria, you were clearly at a disadvantage. You know that yourself. But have you ever thought about why you didn't lose despite being at a disadvantage? Instead, it ended in a draw?"
"That's because I held on..."
Wendy genuinely didn't want to tarnish Fairy Tail's reputation. She loved being here, and seeing Erza, Kana, and Laxus shine made her feel she couldn't let Fairy Tail down. So even though she was battered and bruised, Wendy persevered.
"Isn't that the point?"
Marlon patted Wendy's head; it felt nice.
"This is the power of the heart. You wanted to protect everyone in the Guild; your magic responded to your inner feelings and unleashed your potential. It's that simple. If you keep this up, you'll eventually become a powerful Mage—perhaps even stronger than Natsu and Gajeel."
Marlon wasn't joking; this had a lot in common with games. In games, you can lose; priests must die; team battles can fail; certain characters must fall—it's basically like that. Wendy's mastery of Empty Dragon Slayer Magic was more about supplementary magic—enhancing others' abilities—similar to enchantments. However, this was vastly different from alchemical enchantments; Newton's enchantments were long-lasting while Wendy's were short-term but significantly more potent for explosive combat power. Newton even fantasized about whether Wendy could grant someone resistance to lightning, rendering Laxus ineffective, or provide magical immunity—just imagining it was quite delightful. But for now, that was merely a thought; Wendy still had quite a way to go before reaching that level.
Wendy immediately blushed; she had no intention of comparing herself to Natsu or Gajeel. However, Marlon's words were quite grandiose. After his encouragement, Wendy's spirits lifted considerably.
After sending off Wendy, Marlon finally had the chance to focus on his own matters. In truth, there wasn't much to do; Ginger had given Marlon a tip that an unknown individual had entered the palace. This person caught Ginger's attention because she discovered that this individual looked exactly like Lucy.
There might be someone in this world who resembles another, but after Ginger's analysis, it became highly likely that this person was also Lucy from the future. Consequently, Marlon instructed Ginger to keep an eye on her until he was ready to make contact later that evening.
As he walked through the streets, the figure cloaked in a hood went unnoticed by those around her. In fact, such attire seemed unremarkable in the capital these days. With the influx of outsiders, not everyone wanted to expose themselves to public scrutiny. Additionally, Mages had their quirks; for instance, Mister Gung had once explained his disguises as just another eccentricity. Thus, people generally avoided provoking those who dressed unusually.
This time, Marlon was out to meet Future Lucy, hoping to gather information that differed from what he had learned about Future Rogge.
Future Lucy had been in this era for some time now. Observing the ongoing Great Magic Games around her, she couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief. However, she was also contemplating how to approach her former companions; after all, such matters from the future could be delicate. Just as she pulled out a notebook to review some notes, someone sat down beside her.
"Mind if I sit here?" Marlon smiled at Future Lucy.
"Sorry, I'm leaving soon..." Future Lucy replied, trying her best to avoid contact with anyone from this time period. Exposure could lead to complications.
"What's wrong? Don't you want to catch up with an old friend, Lucy...?"
