Newton did not bring Sting and Rogue back to his base; instead, he arrived at the Guild's laboratory. Although he had moved most of his belongings, he still left behind a portion of his equipment.
The experiments mainly involved having Sting and Rogue engage in various battles, with their opponents being armored figures. The goal was to collect a wide array of data, the most crucial of which was the gathering of Dragon Slayer Magic.
Magic is a product of the heart. It can generally be divided into self-awakening and learned forms. Among the most famous examples of self-awakening is Miraj, who accepted magic through her own awakening and absorbed demons. The other category, learned magic, encompasses a significant portion of magical practices. For instance, Makarov frequently uses light magic, and Newton's Alchemy also falls under this category. Dragon Slayer Magic belongs to the learned type as well.
However, most magic instructors are human, while the teachers of this particular magic are dragons. Therefore, theoretically, anyone should be able to learn Dragon Slayer Magic, suggesting that there should be many Dragon Slayer Mages. Yet so far, Newton only knew of seven Dragon Slayer Mages, indicating that their numbers were quite limited.
Through inquiries with Sting and Rogue, Newton discovered that neither of them understood how they had successfully trained in this magic. They described Dragon Slayer Magic more as a form of martial arts; they simply played around with their dragon fathers and learned it that way.
Newton found this puzzling until Sting and Rogue demonstrated a certain power to him.
Dragon Power.
A Dragon Slayer Mage can slay dragons by transforming their own physicality into that of a dragon. The battle between two similar physical forms leads to a significant enhancement in strength once Dragon Slayer Magic is developed to a certain level, resulting in the appearance of dragon-like physical traits on the Dragon Slayer Mage.
Newton was aware that Natsu seemed to have entered such a state as well; his skin had taken on scales resembling those of a dragon. Facing Natsu at that moment felt akin to confronting an actual dragon.
So would a Dragon Slayer Mage ultimately become a dragon?
To explore this question, Newton sought out Kebula. Fortunately, he had access to both a Mage raised by dragons and one who was merely infused with Magic Crystals. Comparing the two could yield valuable insights.
By contrasting Kebula's and Sting's Dragon Slayer Magic, Newton found that aside from differences in strength, there was no distinction in the nature of their powers. However, Kebula appeared unaware of what Dragon Power was; even when discussing it with him, Kebula seemed far from being able to utilize Dragon Power effectively.
Yet through examinations of Kebula and Sting's bodies, Newton discovered something unexpected: both were becoming stronger. If this trend continued, would it eventually lead to Dragon Slayer Mages truly transforming into dragons?
Suddenly struck by an idea, Newton instructed Jiang to research all materials related to Acnologia. Finally, he found an ancient text in the kingdom's library that recorded a specific term.
Dragon King Festival.
Dragons and dragons, humans and humans, dragons and humans—what is called a festival is, in reality, a shocking war.
The records in the books are scarce, with only a few lines mentioning why the war was initiated and what roles the dragons and humans played in it. However, this was enough to give Newton a direction.
He continued to have Jiang gather information on this matter, especially ancient texts and relics. It would be even better if they could find something to prove their theories.
However, Newton did not share these matters with Sting and Rogue. How could they possibly become like their fathers, with wings and claws, just because of the magic taught to them? That thought felt so lacking.
Nonetheless, Newton did appropriately remind them not to overuse Dragon Slayer Magic.
This also solidified Newton's own idea: to use Magic Crystal as a substitute for Mage to unleash Dragon Slayer Magic.
During this time, things were quite good for Sting and Rogue. The two of them were living happily because the treatment at the Guild was indeed excellent, and they could also learn some things related to Natsu and Gajeel from Newton.
Newton discovered that these two were indeed fans of Natsu and Gajeel. If he didn't know that Natsu and Gajeel weren't interested in each other romantically, he might have even considered playing matchmaker for them.
Time flew by rapidly as Newton conducted his research, and soon the Great Magic Games had reached its third edition.
In the first two editions, Fairy Tail had won the championship in the first round, while their performance in the second round was barely passable. The third edition saw some unexpected dark horses emerge.
First was the newly established but powerful Sword-Biting Tiger. The President was a robust elder resembling a Dark Sand Monk, with several formidable subordinates, including a Thunder God Slayer Mage, someone skilled in memory-altering magic, and the president's daughter who seemed to wield space manipulation magic. Fortunately, since direct combat was not allowed, some modifications were made to the competition rules. While Sword-Biting Tiger did not completely dominate, they still managed to secure first place by a wide margin.
What concerned Newton more was that these individuals seemed intent on stepping over Fairy Tail. They appeared overly arrogant; almost every Guild faced various tormenting tactics from them during battles. Especially that president's daughter—she acted like a sadist; every opponent who faced off against Sword-Biting Tiger left heavily injured without exception.
"Don't they fear inciting public wrath?"
Newton curled his lip as he looked at the message in his hand. The headline read about the Sword-Biting Tiger winning first place in the Great Magic Games, accompanied by a picture of their victory.
"Impressive!"
Sting and Rogue were astonished by this display of strength.
"Impressive, huh?"
Newton shook his head. In terms of raw magical power, these individuals weren't necessarily stronger, but their magic was indeed troublesome. It resembled the forbidden magic of Demon Heart. Everyone had suffered from a lack of information; if they had been prepared, it would have been much harder for these people to achieve victory.
"…"
Suddenly, Sting looked at Newton with a conflicted expression.
"If you want to go, then go."
It was perfectly normal for young people to admire the strong, and Newton had no intention of keeping Sting and Rogue. If they wanted to join Sword-Biting Tiger, that was their choice. Young eagles needed to fall a few times before they could fly. Moreover, Newton had embedded Surveillance Robots within them to gather internal intelligence on Sword-Biting Tiger through Zheng Hai. Therefore, he had no plans to stop them.
Seeing that Newton truly didn't care, Sting grabbed Rogue and prepared to head off to join Sword-Biting Tiger.
