A letter arrived at Fairy Tail, its brevity belied the shocking content within. It stated that Lucy had been kidnapped and included a location, instructing Newton to go alone.
"Who do you think it could be?"
Makarov looked at Newton, the tension palpable among the guild members, as one of their own had been taken.
"Who knows? I have plenty of enemies."
Newton was not exaggerating; the business world was as fierce as a battlefield. In his quest to expand his empire, he had made many foes, and recently he had angered a rather unstable group known as the Holy Ten. Indeed, Newton had a considerable number of adversaries.
"But it’s probably that guy Joseph," he added with a smirk. Although he had many enemies, few truly understood who he was. The clarity of this threat pointed to only two possibilities. As for why Joseph was the prime suspect, it was simply because he was the most troublesome.
"Don't go. I'll contact the Magic Council or someone from the kingdom for help."
Makarov was worried about Newton facing Joseph alone; if it really was Joseph, then Newton would certainly be outmatched.
"Don't worry; I won't be foolish enough to go by myself."
Newton wasn't naive enough to walk into danger alone.
"President, you should inform the Magic Council. Joseph is no longer President; even if we take action against him, it wouldn't be a big deal," Newton suggested. He wasn't looking to play the hero alone; instead, he wanted to bring the entire guild along to confront their enemy directly. Why should he risk everything by himself?
"Alright, then you..."
Makarov looked at Newton, contemplating his next move.
"I'll go ahead and see who it is. It's best to stabilize the situation first. You all just hurry up and follow me."
Newton waved his hand dismissively.
"Isaac..."
Miraj expressed some concern, fearing that something might happen to Newton.
"Don't worry."
Newton smiled at them.
"I'm quite lucky, but you all need to come find me quickly."
He hopped on his motorcycle and sped away.
Arriving at the location mentioned in the letter, he parked his bike and set down his bag.
"I'm here. Aren't you going to come out and meet me? Let me see who it is that wants to meet me and has kidnapped our Guild members."
"Get out of your car! Throw away your bag!"
The voice came from an unknown direction, and Newton shook his head, realizing that the other party was being very cautious.
He could only toss his bag aside, get out of the car, and move a distance away while raising his hands to lower their guard.
"Is this okay?"
"Bang!"
A black, ghostly figure struck Newton squarely in the chest, causing him to spit out a mouthful of blood before collapsing to the ground.
"Hahaha, Newton, oh Newton! Did you ever think this day would come?"
It was Joseph. His once pristine robe was now tattered and torn, his face unkempt and wild, giving him a deranged appearance.
"Where is Lucy?"
Newton crouched on the ground, emotionlessly wiping the blood from the corner of his mouth.
"Hmph."
Joseph seemed quite displeased with Newton's attitude and launched another attack. However, this time several earthen walls rose from the ground to block Joseph's assault.
But then four figures emerged behind Joseph—The Four Elements. Lucy was being held captive by Bunny Maru, and another person, an elderly man whom Newton recognized from his research as Lucy's Father, was also captured. Both were tightly bound and had cloth stuffed in their mouths.
Seeing the flames threatening Lucy's neck, Newton chose to dispel his earthen walls, allowing Joseph's magic to strike him directly.
"Haha, truly worthy of Sir Newton! You're so clever."
As Newton coughed up more blood, Joseph laughed triumphantly.
"Not as clever as you, President Joseph."
Newton simply sat on the ground, gasping for breath.
"How can he make his subordinates so obedient even when he's no longer the President? What about that Iron Dragon?"
Newton certainly knew where Gajeel was; this was merely to provoke Joseph.
"Hah, who cares about that fool?"
Although Joseph pretended to be indifferent, the mocking smile on Newton's face only fueled his anger, leading him to attack Newton once more.
"Cough, haven't you eaten? That attack was really weak; it didn't affect me at all."
Newton laughed maniacally, his smile deeply piercing Joseph's confidence.
"Hahahaha!"
Joseph laughed in rage as he glared at Newton.
"Very good, very good. You really have a sharp tongue. But don't worry, I will treat you well."
"Hey, Four Elements guys, why don't you leave? Following a President like this, you'll eventually become part of a Dark Guild. What will you do when you're hunted down? With your strength, you could easily join any Guild and receive decent treatment. How about joining us at Fairy Tail? Oh right, I almost forgot, that Iron Dragon I mentioned has already joined us too, Joseph's former President..."
Newton clearly saw the hesitation among the Four Elements. Although they acted recklessly, the Dark Guild had a notorious reputation; even becoming a bandit might be better than being part of a Dark Guild.
"Are you trying to betray me?"
To Newton's surprise, yet also in line with his expectations, Joseph's single statement made the Four Elements submit. However, it was clear that if he could resolve their leverage over Joseph, there would be no problem.
"Hey, hey, hey, tell me what kind of leverage Joseph has over you. Let me see if I can help you out. After all, none of you would want your lives to be controlled by someone else, right?"
Joseph looked at Newton with mockery.
"Useless, that's my Dark Curse Magic. Even you won't be able to solve it."
"I see, controlling through a curse?"
Newton nodded. Indeed, a curse was not something that could be resolved with potions or money. It seemed they would have to wait for the old man skilled in Light Magic to arrive.
"Don't worry, after I finish torturing you, I'll plant a curse on you as well. At that point, you'll be my toy. I hear Demon Miraj is your girlfriend? I wonder what she would do for you..."
Bang!
Newton had already appeared in front of Joseph, and with one punch, Joseph's face contorted before he was sent flying.
"I was hoping to have a chat with you, but those words of yours are truly remarkable."
Newton's smile remained, yet it was chillingly cold.
"So, are you ready to die?"
