"Lucy is missing?"
Newton felt a twinge of surprise, but then he looked at the frantic Natsu.
"Are you sure about that?"
After all, a disappearance was a serious matter. If it turned out to be false, things could get complicated.
"I don't know."
Natsu tilted his head, looking puzzled, and then pulled out a note that read:
"I've gone home."
"Come on, it's obvious she just went home."
Newton rolled his eyes in annoyance. He had been worried for nothing, thinking something serious had happened when Lucy simply returned home.
"That's true, but we found a lot of letters at Lucy's house that were never sent. I'm still a bit concerned."
Natsu rarely showed his caring side, and seeing him like this made Newton reminisce about the clever Gray, who used to be a reckless kid always shouting about finding dragons. Although he still shouted about dragons now, he had grown up and learned to care about girls.
Newton looked at Natsu with appreciation, but Natsu's next statement left him utterly speechless.
"If Lucy doesn't come back, won't our team be one person short?"
"You’re only worried because you’d be down a member. Lucy would be upset about this," Newton shook his head helplessly.
"Then why don’t you go find her? The note says she went home. I’ll help you check on Lucy’s family later."
With that, Newton headed straight to Gildarts.
"Boss, what's going on? Is there something happening lately?"
Jin felt a bit strange, as Newton usually wouldn't come over unless there was something important or if he was asked directly.
"Um, there's a bit of a situation. Do you have any information about Lucy who recently joined our Guild?"
"Of course."
Jin smiled confidently.
"What you need to be concerned about is the level of detail in my information, that's all."
He handed Newton a report detailing Lucy's family background. It mentioned her father, a wealthy businessman, but what caught Newton's attention was the brief mention of Lucy's mother, who was identified simply as a Celestial Spirit Mage. There were no further details, but that didn't matter much; after all, this was Lucy's family and not something that directly concerned Newton or Fairy Tail. What truly mattered was how Lucy herself was doing.
"It's just a visit home; it seems like there shouldn't be any issues."
After analyzing the information, Newton lost interest in the matter. If visiting family required constant attention, it would be too troublesome—Newton didn't have that kind of time.
Upon returning to the Guild, he quickly reviewed the information related to Lucy before Natsu and Erza decided to go find her.
"Aren't you going with them this time?"
Miraj asked Newton with a cheerful smile.
"I don't plan on it; I'm not their babysitter."
Newton shook his head. He could help them once, but he couldn't always be there for them. It's essential for people to grow strong on their own.
"Newton, come here; I need to talk to you about something."
Makarov suddenly approached Newton.
"Another matter?"
Newton felt utterly helpless; it seemed like there were so many things happening lately.
"It seems there is some trouble."
Upon entering Makarov's room, Newton was informed of some bad news: Joseph was missing. Although Joseph, a member of the Holy Ten, was not as powerful as Makarov, he was certainly not someone to be underestimated. Even though Joseph had been stripped of his title and the powers of Guild President, he had not been captured. This meant that Joseph was still out there, and the potential danger he posed was significant. Moreover, it wasn't just Joseph; the Four Elements were also unaccounted for. If Joseph decided to play tricks on them, it could lead to serious complications.
"Playing tricks..."
Newton immediately thought of Lucy. The timing was too coincidental, and he quickly shared his concerns about Lucy with Makarov.
"Lucy... she should be fine, right?"
Makarov had his doubts but hoped everything would be alright.
"It’s best if nothing is wrong."
Newton was always inclined to consider the worst-case scenario, so he sighed deeply. It truly had been a tumultuous time lately, and he even began to contemplate whether he should visit a church or something to ward off any bad luck.
"Mira, how about we go out for a bit?"
Thinking on impulse, Newton invited Miraj to join him, treating it as a sort of date.
"Oh? What’s this? Suddenly wanting to go out with me? Could it be that my previous flirtations have finally made you realize you should cherish those around you?"
"When have I ever failed to appreciate those close to me?"
Newton feigned a pained expression.
"Please spare me, Lady Queen. I know I was wrong."
"Who is this Queen?"
Though Miraj said this, her eyes narrowed into slits, revealing that she was genuinely happy.
Miraj looked incredulously at the statue before her. Who goes on a date with their girlfriend to a church? And this guy even went straight for holy water and statues upon entering! While Miraj didn’t look down on churches too much, her own magical affinity lay with demons, which didn’t exactly align well with the church's values.
As Newton approached with his backpack, Miraj wore a smile that was almost teasing, tilting her head to look at him.
"Um... well..."
Newton felt genuinely awkward. It was his idea to go on a date, but choosing to meet at the church with his demon girlfriend was a risky move. Even he found it hard to bear.
"What’s up? Buying so much holy water? You’re not planning to exorcise your wife, are you?"
Miraj remained gentle, fully aware that Newton likely had some serious thoughts behind his desire for holy water. However, if he dared to splash it on her, he could forget about sleeping with her for at least a month—if not six.
"Yeah, I feel like I've been a bit unlucky lately, so I thought I’d buy something to change my luck."
Newton was quite earnest, but seeing him like this left Miraj utterly speechless.
"You actually believe in luck..."
She rolled her eyes, feeling exasperated with her boyfriend.
Fortunately, Newton kept his promise and they strolled around the streets, enjoying food and drinks before catching a play. It was a rather cliché date routine, but for the two of them, it was more than enough. However, upon returning to the Guild, they noticed an unusual atmosphere inside.
