It was somewhat unexpected, yet not entirely out of the question. This time, Makarov intended to recruit Iron Dragon Gajeel. The potential of a Dragon Slayer Mage indeed warranted such an action from Makarov, but could he truly trust the character of the person in question?
Gajeel felt a chill run down his spine under Newton's intense gaze, but soon Newton shook his head and walked toward the Guild.
"Don't worry, don't worry. It's fine. Although Newton may seem strict, he's actually a good person," Makarov reassured Gajeel.
"Though he does have a bit of a twisted sense of humor," he added.
"Is that what you call it?"
Gajeel could still vividly recall the fear he experienced that night, the terror of having chili sauce forced down his throat and mustard squeezed up his nose; it was enough to make him want to cry.
Meanwhile, Newton returned to the Guild, which was as noisy as ever. This familiar chaos brought him a sense of comfort.
"Did everything get resolved?"
Miraj approached Newton with a drink in hand, smiling brightly at him.
"Yeah," Newton nodded as he accepted the drink from Miraj.
"Everything alright here in the Guild?"
"Of course! Erza and I are here at the Guild; what could possibly go wrong?"
Miraj beamed confidently at Newton, exuding a sense of pride.
"Yes, yes, yes, our Mira is the strongest."
Newton smiled as he patted Miraj's head, and she squinted her eyes comfortably like a cat.
"By the way, you can't be a flirt!"
Miraj suddenly seemed to remember something and looked at Newton with her hands on her hips, slightly displeased.
"Flirt?"
Newton was taken aback, unsure why his partner would say such a thing. Even if he wanted to be a flirt, what could he do? In the Guild... wait? It seemed there were quite a few beautiful women in his Guild, but they were just friends, right?
"What kind of joke is that?"
Newton poked Miraj's forehead playfully.
"I'm not joking!"
Miraj stuck out her tongue and then ran back behind the counter.
"Honestly."
Newton shook his head, finished his drink, and walked into the Fairy Tail library. As soon as he entered, he saw Reby reading a book.
"Hey, Reby, how's your health?"
Newton greeted her.
"I'm almost fully recovered."
Reby looked at Newton with gratitude. If it weren't for his help, she might have been seriously injured.
"I heard you completely took down that Specter? That's quite impressive."
Reby admired Newton a bit; he didn't just teach that Iron Dragon a lesson, but also managed to dismantle their Guild, which truly relieved her.
"It's nothing. I just felt pity for that guy; playing with someone so lacking in intelligence isn't really interesting."
Newton had never regarded Joseph as a serious threat.
"By the way, to thank you, how about I treat you to dinner tomorrow night?"
Reby extended the invitation to Newton, whose expression turned peculiar. He wondered if this was somehow related to Miraj's flirtatious nature. However, he shook his head, dismissing the thought that she might actually like him—one of life's great illusions.
"Sure, but I won't eat anything that's not good."
Newton joked.
"Don't worry; I promise it will be satisfying!"
Reby was confident, which made Newton start to look forward to what she would serve him.
The next evening, Newton arrived as invited. He had asked earlier and learned that Reby could bring family, so he brought Miraj along.
The location was Reby's home. To Newton's surprise, he had expected her to take him out to a restaurant, but instead, he found himself at her house.
Reby's home was filled with a strong scholarly atmosphere; books were scattered on the floor and tables everywhere. There were glasses, pens, and notebooks around as well. The decorations were minimal, with only a few dolls adding a touch of youthful charm to the room.
Of course, Reby wasn't alone in the room; she was accompanied by Salusuk and Dolaire, two friends who often spent time with her—all three had been saved by Newton.
"Sister Mira!"
Salusuk was writhing with excitement, looking like a fan who had just spotted their idol.
"Hey, hey, our true love is Reby!"
Dolaire's words seemed more like a reminder to himself than a warning to Salusuk.
Newton tugged at the corner of his mouth. On one hand, he felt proud of how outstanding his girlfriend was; on the other hand, he was quite annoyed that these two idiots were staring at her so lecherously.
Miraj, however, showed no signs of anger. Instead, she covered her mouth and chuckled lightly.
"But if you keep praising other women like this, your Reby might get angry."
Although Reby was indeed a bit upset, it wasn't enough to cause a real outburst, so she immediately prepared to explain. But Newton quickly placed his hand on Reby's head and ruffled her hair, effectively silencing her.
"Reby is actually very cute."
"Is that so? Does that mean I'm not cute?"
Miraj then pinched Newton's waist playfully.
"Hiss."
Newton couldn't help but gasp in surprise and quickly smiled at Miraj.
"No, no, no! My wife is beautiful! My wife is beautiful!"
Miraj's face instantly flushed red, and her grip tightened even more.
"Who is your wife!"
"Damn it!"
Knowing where Salusuk and Dolaire got that handkerchief, she bit down hard on one corner, her entire being filled with jealousy as she glared at Newton.
"Alright, alright, you two can stop flaunting your love."
Reby quickly interjected, looking quite displeased at Newton and Miraj.
"The whole Guild knows you two are like an old married couple, so there's no need to show off in front of us single folks. It's burning us out here."
Reby began to write fiery letters in the air, looking as if she could throw them out at any moment.
Miraj and Newton exchanged a glance and then burst into laughter.
The meal was quite enjoyable, and Newton had to admit that Reby's cooking was indeed very good. The matter with Specter seemed to have passed just like that. Newton continued to spend every day in the library reading, but when Laxus returned, the conflict erupted.
"Sure enough, this Guild should kick out these weaklings!"
Laxus was quite dissatisfied, but after all, no one else had caused any problems; the key issue lay with Reby and her friends.
"Laxus!"
Erza directly threw a table at him.
"Heh heh, Erza, even you are nothing more than this in my eyes!"
Laxus stimulated his body with lightning, his speed becoming incredibly fast. However, he stumbled slightly and came to a halt right in front of Erza.
"Newton!"
Laxus turned to look at Newton, his anger palpable.
"This is my territory."
Newton remained indifferent.
"Hmph, you'd better not let me run into you outside!"
Laxus's expression shifted between anger and frustration before he turned and left.
"That bastard!"
Erza slammed her fist on the table. Newton was about to say something to calm her down when a panicked voice interrupted.
"Erza, Lucy is missing!"
