“Did you just let him escape?!” Tastandin roared with fury.
Rebia and Angry Beasts exchanged glances, and the latter immediately sat down, while the dog promptly brought over a healing scroll.
“Is this your attitude towards the deal?!” Tastandin, feeling ignored, became even angrier. “Go catch him right now! If that warrior gets away, none of you will receive Eternity's protection!”
“Mundo... Mundo is going to explode!” Not far away, Mundo scanned the surroundings anxiously, unable to find any trace of Garen.
“And you! Why didn’t you chase after him just now?” Tastandin shouted at Mundo again. “Stop calling yourself that ridiculous name!”
“Um... ahhh!” Mundo froze for a moment when Tastandin pointed at him, then suddenly began shouting nonsensically before abruptly falling silent. “Mundo has to say his name all day long, or he’ll forget it! It happened before!”
“You idiot!” Tastandin glared, his anger intensifying.
His purpose for coming to Dead Man's Gorge was primarily to kill Garen, aside from acquiring the Arcane Crystal. He couldn’t deny the immense shadow Garen cast over him. However, he had lured in two world-class powerhouses like Angry Beasts and Rebia with the promise of Eternity, and even picked up the oddball Mundo along the way, who had actively requested to join. He thought victory was assured, but who would have guessed that he would be nearly beaten to death by Garen right from the start?
And in the end, Garen had managed to escape!
“Shut up,” Rebia said with narrowed eyes. He held a deep disdain for this former subordinate of the blood clan; if it weren't for his possession of some special power, Rebia wouldn’t stoop to associating with him.
“Since they’ve run into the barrier, we won’t be able to kill them anytime soon,” Rebia said calmly.
In Lost Land, barriers were destined to be the most dangerous existence. Even for Rebia and Angry Beasts, it was difficult to break through quickly when their powers were suppressed.
“What should we do then?” Tastandin gritted his teeth; just thinking about how far Garen might have already run made his blood boil.
“Wait.”
“Wait?” Tastandin was taken aback and shouted angrily, “Are we just going to wait for them to come back?!”
Rebia ignored Tastandin and walked over to examine a relatively intact piece of Magic Pattern Armor from a distance.
Finally, a dog-like creature stepped forward and explained, “Angry Beasts not only possess top-notch physical strength but also have unparalleled skills in breaking barriers.”
Tastandin glanced at the injured Angry Beasts, hesitated for a moment, and ultimately decided to remain silent.
...
Walking within the barrier was a dangerous endeavor, yet it was the unique choice of Tifet at that time. Garen's injuries were severe, particularly from that initial strike by the strange man; it was evident that the large blade had been coated with Venom. Tifet knew he could not contend with two world-class powerhouses, let alone carry the heavily injured Garen.
Before losing consciousness, Garen had handed the Heart of Agou to Tifet.
Tifet found it hard to believe that the lost Heart of Agou was in Garen's possession, but when he tried to ask about it, Garen had already passed out.
Using the Heart of Agou, Tifet managed to break through two barriers in succession, yet he still did not dare to let his guard down. He understood very well how profound Wolf Emperor's mastery over barriers was; if it came down to it, he probably wouldn't be much slower than the Heart of Agou.
...
When Garen woke up, he found himself leaning against a low slope.
“Remarkable recovery ability,” Tifet's voice came from behind him.
“We escaped?” Garen's voice sounded weak.
“Yeah, at least for now they won't catch up,” Tifet replied, his voice also somewhat weak, perhaps due to the exhaustion from their escape.
"Is it safe to say so?" Garen snapped a piece of grass and tasted its bitterness at the corner of his mouth.
At that moment, Tifet fell into silence.
Garen turned around, only to be met with a horrifying sight—Tifet was leaning on his sword, blood streaming down his face from a wound on his head, his silver armor shattered and revealing deep gashes that exposed bone. He had his eyes closed, as the blood had blurred his vision, leaving nothing but red in sight.
The blood-stained face managed a smile. "Not very lucky; I passed through three offensive barriers."
Although the Heart of Agou had cleared the way, the power of the barriers themselves was not to be underestimated. Tifet's skills like "Mountain Spirit" were not as formidable as Garen's physique, and making it through three layers of barriers was already quite impressive.
He must have reached his limit.
It was only then that the bitterness of the grass truly registered in his mouth.
Garen took a deep breath. "It seems it's not very safe after all."
"Indeed," Tifet nodded.
Garen suddenly asked, "How soon will they arrive?"
Tifet knew what Garen was thinking and shook his head. "The Angry Beasts have a high achievement in barrier-related matters. If they haven't caught up yet, it's likely they're recovering from their injuries. Based on timing, their speed in breaking through the barriers won't be slower than ours."
"Is that so..." Garen lowered his head in silence.
The last glimmer of hope had vanished.
After all, there were two world-class opponents and one top-tier rune master, Mundo, on the other side. If he was also skilled in barriers, Garen wouldn't have any time left to recover his strength.
The blade from Mundo had nearly seeped its poison into his internal organs. Although most of the toxins had been dealt with by the Resilience talent, the paralysis effect had yet to take hold, leaving him unable to move for the time being, let alone continue breaking through the barrier.
Tifet, it seemed, was also at the end of his strength.
The two of them were like lambs waiting to be slaughtered, unable to act and unable to evade the hungry wolves pursuing them.
A long silence passed over the gentle slope.
Tifet suddenly asked, "No wonder your speed in breaking the barrier is so fast; it turns out the Heart of Agou is with you."
Clearly, at this point, Tifet no longer had the energy to question Garen about how he came to possess the Heart of Agou. Thus, this statement was not a question but rather an expression of realization.
Moreover, his voice was growing weaker by the moment.
Garen broke another blade of grass and smiled. "So you can't die this quickly; otherwise, there will be no one to catch the thief."
Tifet recognized that Garen was joking and couldn't help but chuckle in response. He recalled their first encounter in Blackstone Town when he had brought the Deer Lion Dog to meet Yasthia, only to have a warrior emerge from the neighboring door.
Little did Tifet know back then that one day he would find himself trapped in the same place as that warrior, silently awaiting the arrival of death.
To be honest, those days in Blackstone Town were probably the most carefree moments for Tifet after graduation. There were no intrigues, no killings, no wars... It felt like watching that group of Newbies complain during training was already the most enjoyable thing.
If given another chance, Tifet would want to be a mentor for once.
Gradually, Tifet's smile faded away.
He sighed softly, "What difference does it make when one dies?"
Garen paused for a moment and said, "Living another moment can't be wrong."
Tifet was taken aback, thinking to himself that this guy truly had a charm that could infect others no matter where he went!
Just then, a tear appeared in the barrier not far away, and a pair of sharp wolf claws reached out…
Watching the five figures approaching from the distance, Tifet let out a soft sigh.
Even Garen, who was usually so defiant, rarely showed any signs of resistance now.
It wasn't that he didn't want to; it was just that his current physical condition allowed him to do little more than reach out and snap some grass blades.
The situation had truly become a deadlock.
Was this it?
Garen thought to himself.
At that moment, a massive shadow loomed over Garen.
From the low slope came a voice filled with surprise and disdain.
"Uh… you look like you're having a rough time?"
