The charred body, the bloody cleaver, and the meticulously planned conspiracy.
If it weren't for the police, no one would believe that this was something that young girls, still in the bloom of youth, could do. And facing the cameras, the words spoken by one of the girls sent chills down spines.
“She said she wanted to stand there and watch her burn away, but suddenly that woman sat up. She got scared and ran away.”
“Life and death are determined by fate. I don’t know; I wouldn’t kill someone for no reason.”
Date of Incident: November 18, 2009.
Location of Incident: A village in Sanhe City, Langfang City, Hebei Province.
That morning, Old Man Niu took his shovel and headed along a small path at the edge of the village to dig up some soil to take home.
Old Man Niu hummed a little tune, feeling relaxed and carefree. Suddenly, he noticed what seemed to be a bald model lying on the ground ahead. Without thinking much of it, he walked over.
To avoid obstructing the path, Old Man Niu casually used his shovel to poke at the model, not expecting that this action would nearly scare him out of his wits.
What lay there was not a model at all; it was clearly a charred corpse. Upon realizing this, Old Man Niu dropped his shovel and ran home as fast as he could to call the police.
After receiving the report, the police quickly arrived at the scene. The site was adjacent to a road and located on the outskirts of the village, an area that was rarely visited.
As the police approached the scene, they were hit by a strong smell of gasoline. Upon entering, they discovered a body lying on the road, head facing south and feet pointing north. Beneath the body were two large pools of blood, and the surrounding hay had been completely burned away.
After a thorough examination by forensic technicians, the police determined that the victim was an extremely young woman. Her face had been severely burned, making identification impossible; however, there were three distinct stab wounds on her head, indicating a typical murder and corpse burning case.
The technicians noted that while the three stab wounds to the victim's head were not very deep, each had struck vital areas. Coupled with the act of cremation, it was clear that the suspect intended to kill the victim. This also posed significant challenges for the police investigation.
Initially, based on proximity to the case, the police suspected that either the victim or the murderer might be a villager from the nearby community.
Subsequently, officers conducted a sweep of the villagers, but after two days of investigation, they found no valuable leads; there were no missing persons reported in the village, nor any suspicious individuals.
Soon after, detailed autopsy results were released by the coroner, confirming that the victim was female and very young. The time of death was estimated to be about an hour after dinner; however, her fatal injury was not to her head but rather due to being burned alive.
This revelation shocked all officers involved in the case. Who could possibly commit such a heinous act against a young girl?
Based on this information, the police analyzed that there were only two possible motives for this crime: either a crime of passion or rape and murder.
Furthermore, they believed that there must be some clues left at the crime scene and decided to conduct a re-examination.
Finally, about 300 meters from the crime scene, an inconspicuous packaging bag caught their attention. It contained wrappers from two well-known knife brands; this particular kitchen knife was sold exclusively at the largest supermarket in town.
The police quickly headed to the supermarket to investigate and focused on identifying anyone who had purchased this knife prior to the incident.
Before long, they reviewed surveillance footage from the supermarket and discovered that on November 17, 2009, around 6 PM, two young women had bought two kitchen knives. The cashier confirmed that those were the only two knives sold that day.
The surveillance footage revealed that on November 17, 2009, at 6:25 PM, two young girls approached the checkout counter. One of them was holding two kitchen knives and mimicking chopping motions while waiting in line to pay. After completing their purchase, they left the supermarket.
After reviewing the footage multiple times, the police analyzed that the girls' actions were quite ordinary and relatable, making it difficult to associate them with any criminal behavior.
The crime scene investigation indicated that the method used was extremely brutal. Based on the timeline, the time of the crime occurred around 10 PM. Additionally, considering the stab wounds and signs of cremation, it seemed more likely that a male perpetrator was involved.
Subsequently, after thorough consideration, the police ruled out the two young girls as suspects. However, this led to a deadlock in the case, forcing the police to adjust their investigation approach and search for new evidence.
Just when the police were at a loss, a detail that had been overlooked by almost everyone came to light: the time of death for the victim was around 10 PM, and since the crime scene was relatively secluded, any suspect would have needed transportation to reach it.
If the suspect did not drive themselves, they would have had to take a taxi to arrive at the scene.
With this lead established, the police quickly began investigating taxi services.
Soon enough, they discovered that around 10:20 PM on November 17, a phone number had requested a taxi near the crime scene. The individual sounded very anxious when calling for the cab and made two consecutive requests.
However, when the taxi driver arrived, the caller did not answer their phone. It wasn't until half an hour later that they finally picked up but claimed they no longer needed a ride as they had already left. The taxi driver was understandably upset.
Notably, the time of death for the victim closely coincided with when this individual called for a taxi. The police promptly retrieved the caller's phone number for further investigation.
