Late at night.
I stared at the ceiling, feeling colder than ever.
Buzz buzz buzz—
My phone rang, and I quickly answered it.
"Guo Fang, I've transferred the money, but because the amount is so large, it might not arrive until tomorrow."
"Zhao Xiangchun, thank you."
"You're welcome, but I hope you can treat me like your brother and not be so formal."
"Okay..."
I kept thanking him, but Zhao Xiangchun interrupted me, urging me to go to sleep.
I shook my head and told him that the debt between me and Ma San was settled, so he shouldn't worry about it anymore.
"What?"
Zhao Xiangchun exclaimed. I explained briefly, and he finally sighed in relief, reminding me a few more times before hanging up.
The next day.
I went to Guo Huai's hometown.
It was an old house that had only been partially renovated.
Originally, Guo Huai intended to finish the new house for his parents.
But because we were paying off debts together, he had never been able to complete it for them.
As I walked into the yard, a few chickens were running around chaotically.
The door was open, and I could hear the voices of Mom Xiao and Dad Xiao coming from inside.
I hesitated for a moment and sat down beside a dry well behind the house.
I couldn't face them.
Suddenly, I heard footsteps behind me.
My body stiffened as I quickly hid behind a large tree.
The footsteps grew closer and closer.
Through the gaps in the leaves, I saw Guo Huai walking over while talking on the phone. He looked thinner, his figure more gaunt. I covered my mouth as tears streamed down my face.
"Ma San, I've paid off all my debts..."
"After I'm gone, please take care of Guo Fang. Don't let those bastards looking for revenge on her father trouble her."
"Dong Guofang, where did you get the money?"
"Brother Ma, thank you. I'll prepare a generous gift for you later."
"Alright, goodbye."
Guo Huai hung up the phone. He stood in the wind, silent for a long while. Then, he slowly opened his hand. In his palm lay a heart-shaped candy.
"Guo Fang, you need to be well."
His soft whisper faded gently into the air with the breeze. I covered my face, desperately trying to stifle my sobs. But my heart ached so much. Guo Huai, why are you so foolish? Why do I deserve such kindness from you? Why do I deserve it?
I knew I couldn't go on like this. I dialed Chu Lanping's number.
"Guo Huai has liver cancer and needs surgery. Please talk to him."
"What did you say?"
Chu Lanping exclaimed, and I briefly explained the situation, but she fell silent.
"Miss Chu, I'm begging you, help him. I'm pleading with you."
"Why should I help you?"
Chu Lanping's voice was cold. I opened my mouth but couldn't find the words.
"Dong Guofang, you've already divorced him. Stop clinging to him; otherwise, don't blame me for being rude."
"I..."
I took a deep breath.
"I just want to give the money to his parents. I won't have any more ties with him."
"Hah, who would believe that?"
Chu Lanping scoffed and hung up the phone.
But I saw Guo Huai answer another call; it seemed his parents were calling him away.
I let out a sigh of relief.
Yet, thinking about what I had to face next, I felt a pang of reluctance.
The two elderly people were already advanced in age, and I truly didn't want to bear the news to them.
But I had no choice but to do so.
"Mom, Guo Huai..."
"What happened to Huai'er?"
My mother grabbed my hand tightly, her face filled with anxiety.
I gritted my teeth and told them everything.
The expressions on the elderly couple's faces instantly darkened with sorrow.
"Dad, Mom..."
"Oh dear, why is Huai'er so foolish?"
My mother began to cry, and my father's eyes turned red as well.
He sighed softly, gently patting my mother's back.
"Huai'er is a good child; he will be fine. Let's call him right now."
I nodded, leaving the money with them, and returned home in a daze.
