"Did you spend last night with Guo Huai?"
Chu Lanping was also furious.
"Why are you so nervous?"
"Guo Huai is mine!"
"If it weren't for you meddling back then, I would be the one standing by his side now!"
"The fact that he came to find me last night shows that he has already changed his heart!"
"Dong Guofang, be sensible and leave him sooner rather than later!"
Guo Huai was with Chu Lanping last night?
I stood there in shock, releasing my grip.
No wonder he was so distant last night.
Could it be that he really had changed?
"Dong Guofang, you don't deserve to hurt Guo Huai."
Chu Lanping looked at me coldly.
"Do you know how Guo Huai has been repaying the debts you owe?"
"He sold off the basic equipment of his research team just to help you pay your debts."
"You probably didn't know, but he's drowning in debt now; even eating has become a problem!"
"Dong Guofang, you don't deserve him!"
I stood there, stunned.
Chu Lanping's words struck my heart like a heavy hammer.
So, Guo Huai had sacrificed so much for me.
I truly am a burden.
"Guo Fang, what's wrong?"
Zhao Xiangchun walked over to me, concern etched on his face.
"It's nothing."
I shook my head and gently pushed his hand away.
"I have something to take care of; I need to go home."
"Are you sure you're okay?"
Zhao Xiangchun looked at me worriedly.
"Yeah."
I forced a smile and turned to leave.
Right now, I just wanted to be alone in silence.
When I got home...
Guo Huai sat quietly in a chair, engrossed in a book. His slender figure appeared so lonely under the soft glow of the lamp. I slowly approached him from behind, catching a glimpse of the scar on the back of his neck. That scar was a reminder of the time he took a knife for me, protecting me from Ma San. What reason did I have to continue dragging him down?
“Guo Huai,” I said softly.
“Let’s get a divorce.”
Guo Huai's body trembled slightly at my words. After a moment, he set the book down and turned to look at me.
“Guo Fang, you’ve finally come to your senses,” he replied calmly, without a hint of emotion.
“I’m sorry, Guo Huai. Thank you for everything these years.” My nose tinged with bitterness as tears began to fall.
“You don’t need to pay me back for that money,” Guo Huai interrupted gently. “Consider it a parting gift.”
“Alright, let’s go through with the divorce tomorrow,” I said.
Guo Huai stood up and walked into the bedroom. “Tonight, please help me pack my things.”
“Guo Huai, I…” I wanted to say something, but my throat felt constricted, and no words came out. Perhaps it was too late for anything now.
I followed Guo Huai’s request and meticulously packed his belongings.
“Guo Fang, you don’t need to feel guilty,” Guo Huai said as he stood in front of me, his expression serene. “This path was my choice from the beginning. No matter how difficult or exhausting it was, it was still my decision.”
“Now, I just want to let go.”
“It’s better for both of us this way. You’re capable of taking care of yourself now.”
I forced a smile and nodded in agreement.
"Where are you going?" I couldn't help but ask before Guo Huai left.
"I'm just going to hang out at an old classmate's place for a bit," he replied, picking up his phone.
"I booked a flight for tomorrow to go back home and get the household registration book. We'll get our marriage certificate sorted."
"Oh," I said, nodding numbly.
Guo Huai walked away.
I sat there in the room, lost in thought.
The air still held traces of Guo Huai's presence.
His essence faded little by little until it was completely gone.
What about my future?
I gazed blankly out the window.
I stood up and closed the window.
Then I saw a familiar figure sitting on a bench downstairs.
It was Guo Huai!
He hadn't left yet.
I hurried downstairs, only to find a vibrant woman chatting with him, her smile as warm as spring sunshine.
Guo Huai sat quietly on the bench, a smile on his face.
In that moment, I suddenly realized that someone else was already by Guo Huai's side.
