As the situation settled, Cui Ming noticed that people were dispersing. He and Sadin walked towards a nearby supply point for the messengers while speaking in hushed tones. "Today feels off. Look at the Fallen Alliance; they've already prepared firewood, built a fire, and gathered food. It seems they have no intention of leaving the crowd or even returning to their rooms." If that was the case, it would be impossible to lure out the Murderer. Cui Ming could only pinpoint where the trap was set but had no idea where the Murderer was lurking.
Sadin asked, "What if I send a messenger as bait?"
Cui Ming replied bluntly, "Then I can only think of you as a beast in my heart."
Sadin was taken aback by this remark and after a long pause said, "That's quite a powerful statement. The current situation isn't entirely bad; right now, the Murderer is fishing, and the fish haven't taken the bait. No matter what, he has to strike once every fifteen days. If the fish aren't biting, he'll be frustrated. If someone suddenly takes the bait, he'll be excited and reel it in immediately."
Cui Ming interjected, "Why are you saying all this? You haven't mentioned who the bait is."
Sadin replied leisurely, "I want to give it a try."
"What's this? Are you getting impatient with life? Or do you want to prove that practitioners of Eternal Sphere are superior to those of Toad Clan?" Cui Ming found it hard to believe.
"When you want to catch and tame a prey, you must show that you are stronger than it; this way, the prey will be easily tamed," Sadin explained. "Silent City has experienced multiple tremors; I need a professional digger to understand how much longer Silent City can survive."
It seemed that the city lord was still around. Sadin wouldn't overthink things; even if he did, he wouldn't act differently since his understanding of the Murderer came only from Toad's fragmented words. However, if there were orders from the city lord, that would be another matter entirely—Sadin needed to take risks.
Sadin still required Cui Ming's assistance.
...
The sun slowly moved towards the west, leaving only a faint glow behind. The fire of the Fallen Alliance had been lit; they were quietly conversing while preparing food. Some were cooking below while others were grilling. However, Cui Ming found it rather stiff. If it were in Three Continents with a dozen people gathered around a fire with food, the atmosphere would be joyful and lively rather than this lifelessness.
"That's enough," Sadin remarked as he watched the sun disappear and then walked towards the Fallen Alliance. The members of Fallen Alliance set down their food and looked up at Sadin and Cui Ming as they approached. Just as they were about to reach them, Sadin veered off towards a wooden cabin. The members of Fallen Alliance exchanged glances but remained silent, returning their attention to their food, except for one warrior who rolled over on his wheel closer to them.
"What do you need help with?" Cui Ming asked, extending a hand forward in a gesture to stop. "Please go back, thank you."
The War God glanced at Sadin, who had just entered the room, and stepped back.
At that moment, Sadin entered the room. Following Cui Ming's instructions, the Force trap was located in the studio on the right side. The studio was filled with numerous runes and books, a wizard's most private space. However, for Sadin, there was no privacy in Silent City except for the Lord. Sadin walked into the studio at a leisurely pace.
Suddenly, Sadin felt a halt in his body, as if his legs were ensnared by thick mud. While an ordinary person would look down at this moment, Sadin did not. With a wave of his right hand, he vanished into thin air. Almost simultaneously, an ugly beetle-like creature of similar size appeared, its pincers snapping at nothing. As Sadin disappeared, he left behind two black orbs—energy from Void Power—which exploded and created a large hole in the ground. The Beetle realized something was amiss and prepared to flee, only to find its exit blocked.
Just when the Beetle was panicking and lost, Sadin reappeared. He pulled over a chair and sat at the entrance of the studio, staring silently at the Beetle.
The commotion inside the room drew attention from about half of the Fallen Alliance members standing twenty meters away; they began to approach the house. Cui Ming maintained his blocking gesture. "Step back." Although it wasn't his concern, he had been entrusted with a task and would act loyally.
Rationally, these distressed individuals sensed something was wrong inside. What kind of problem? Was it treasure? Was it danger? They didn't know. Everyone else retreated except for the War God, who continued to advance. Cui Ming flipped his hand and revealed a Yellow Card; the War God ignored it. At a distance of ten meters, Cui Ming played his card. As it flew through the air, a halo appeared around the War God’s body—his mark of invincibility from Competition Matches. Naturally, Cui Ming's Yellow Card had no effect.
The Yellow Card was blocked; the ground beneath the War God exploded as he charged toward Cui Ming, a spinning wheel in his right hand ready to strike. Just then, Cui Ming produced another Yellow Card. They had both seen each other's abilities before; what could this card be? The War God hesitated, holding onto his boomerang wheel without throwing it as he watched Cui Ming step back slowly.
Minutes later, Sadin and the Beetle emerged from the house. The War God looked at the Beetle with a worried expression—not out of concern for the Beetle but for himself. The Beetle seemed not yet to have learned the language of Eternal Sphere; seeing the War God charge forward made Sadin draw forth a sword condensed from Void Power and slash downwards. The blade struck the Beetle's hard shell on its back and cut through five centimeters deep. The Beetle cried out in pain and collapsed to the ground. Sadin withdrew his sword and moved ahead while the Beetle struggled to follow along, using Force to mend its wounds.
Cui Ming pointed at the War God and beckoned him over; irritated, he walked closer. Cui Ming leaned in and whispered in his ear, "Did you kill its master?"
The War God smiled and replied, "They will only resent their master."
Cui Ming said, "That is usually true; however, if a new master takes it in and it witnesses that new master being killed, it will naturally harbor hatred."
"What do you want?"
Bingo! He guessed correctly. As Cui Ming and the War God walked side by side like old friends, he continued, "Mercenaries value reputation above all else; you are the last practitioner mercenary of Eternal Sphere. Right?"
"Yes."
"Then you owe me one."
"What do you need me to do?"
"I don't know yet."
The War God hesitated for a moment and said, "Unless it's about dying, I will agree to owe you one."
Cui Ming nodded and turned to follow Sadin's footsteps. "Congratulations on acquiring a new pet."
Sadin did not respond but asked in return, "Does the War God have anything to do with this?"
"No."
"She is a very powerful practitioner, but she is not a woman skilled in deception or lying," Sadin said. "I suspect she is related to the Burrowing Beasts, but I don't want to get involved too much. My business here is done. In three days, a cargo ship will set sail, and I will follow it out. You can wait for me at sea then."
Cui Ming hurriedly replied, "The ocean is vast; we might not even cross paths." He hated relying on luck.
Sadin said, "Alright then, let's meet in about ten days at a small town in the Three Continents. There's only one inn in that town."
"Okay," Cui Ming replied. "Then we'll take our leave for now."
Sadin smiled and asked, "Aren't you afraid I might go back on my word?"
"There’s no benefit in deceiving me. By the way, if it's convenient, please help me keep an eye on the Prophet. An envoy has been watching me all day today. The Prophet knows that killing will happen in fifteen days; if he hasn't shown himself, it means..."
Sardin Dynasty raised a hand sideways, indicating the supply point. The three envoys looked at Sadin, who pointed to one of them. Sadin said to the envoy, "Tell the Prophet not to make things difficult for my friend."
The envoy did not argue and replied, "Understood," before turning to leave.
Cui Ming chuckled, "I remember what we need to do; it seems rather unfavorable for the Prophet."
"I'm just doing my job; it's not personal," Sadin sighed lightly. "The Prophet's strength is on par with mine, but why does he trust Mage? It's clear that it's an evil energy entity." Sadin had more to say. As one of the two individuals who controlled Void Power within the Eternal Sphere, he had also been tempted by the idea of becoming a deity—a thought he dared not entertain. The Mage energy entity confirmed that humans could live for a long time. Faced with death, Sadin would rather his physical form perish and become an energy entity; this was humanity's instinctive fear of death. However, Sadin sensed evil—a dark temptation. He had not undergone training in dark magic, so his mind remained unaffected. The Prophet was different.
Last time, he had been a step too late; the Prophet had returned to Silent City first and activated the island protection array there to summon a Void Creature into the Eternal Sphere. Although the Prophet told him that he realized he had made a mistake and would not be swayed by Mage, Sadin did not believe him. If he could kill Mage, Sadin would be more than willing. On one hand, he genuinely did not want Mage to harm others; on the other hand, he hoped to maintain a harmonious relationship with the Prophet. In Silent City, the only person close enough to him whom he could consider a friend was the Prophet.
...
The three of them and a turtle left the jungle and after several days of walking, found their yacht. The yacht was still floating on the water, and the sound of Miss Fortune starting the engine lifted everyone's spirits.
During these days, Cui Ming and Miss Fortune had grown quite close, always whispering together. Feng couldn't help but eavesdrop on their conversation; it turned out they were discussing details of a plan to take down Jinjin. After returning to the mainland, Miss Fortune would first send the turtle to Twilight City before heading to Eastern Continent herself. Jinjin's idol was a vampire-like singer from Dawn City with pale skin and red lips covered in tattoos. Miss Fortune did not want outsiders involved in this matter, but Cui Ming still shared Zhao Wei's contact information with her.
The yacht had plenty of books, and Feng became the turtle's reading teacher. With nothing else to do, Feng took his role seriously.
The journey was smooth sailing; although they deviated slightly from their course, they managed to reach the small town where they were supposed to meet Sadin with guidance from fishing boats they encountered at sea. The town only had one hotel, which was quite upscale, with guest rooms meeting star hotel standards.
They booked three rooms: Feng and Cui Ming shared one, while Miss Fortune and the turtle shared another for supervision purposes. After enduring hardships in Silent City, Feng decided to unwind at a bar after arriving in town. Meanwhile, Cui Ming stayed in his room taking notes about his experiences in Silent City. Tomorrow Miss Fortune would leave, so he needed to finish his notes tonight. (To be continued.)
