Beiyue assigned roles to each team member and said, "Li Qing, you are a combat support type. You have combat strength and specialize in enhancement. With your flying kick's speed, you can easily break through the enemy's formation, making you particularly suitable for battles involving two or more opponents. In one-on-one situations, it depends on the opponent; you might be at a disadvantage."
Li Qing nodded, "When I encounter enhancement types, I can hold my own. But against those from the Magic System, I can easily be restrained."
Beiyue continued, "Mi Xiaonan, you are agile. Wherever Mi Xiaonan appears, people become tense because you deal significant damage and have quick escape and pursuit speeds. Your survival ability is strong; you can move freely and assist teammates under pressure."
In a meditative state, Mi Xiaonan made a V sign with her fingers. For the past week, she had been in a trance-like meditation. Today, Li Qing had brought her to the meeting to get some fresh air and check on her condition.
Beiyue added, "I am an infiltrator type. In battles involving two or more opponents, my goal is to penetrate the enemy's formation and attack powerful opponents like Ding Ze. Ding Ze is definitely a main attacker and will surely be the primary target for the enemy. Therefore, Mi Xiaonan should prioritize helping Ding Ze stay alert."
Ding Ze remarked, "I've watched some arbitration matches, and that's true. Opponents like Beiyue have high endurance; once engaged, both their backline and frontline will primarily target players like me. Beiyue and Li Qing are not primary targets in multi-player battles; if the enemy chooses to attack them first, they are essentially asking for trouble. So when we have the initiative, we must penetrate their backline while also protecting our own."
Beiyue looked at Cui Ming and pondered for a while before saying, "I don't know how to position you; just be Freeman and move freely."
"I like moving freely," Cui Ming replied.
Li Qing addressed the group, "Brothers, our main goal this time isn't to place in the top three. Many haven't realized that Silent City and Fire Cult are well-prepared. Pirate City is another story; while they claim independence as kings, their strength isn't formidable. Our objective is to contend with them. Even if we face total defeat, we can gain more understanding of them."
Cui Ming asked, "Are all Fire Cultists masked?"
"Yes," Li Qing confirmed. "But we can glean some information from their appearances; four of them still retain standard orc features—horses, snakes, Lion Dogs, bulls—and one seems to be female. They don't appear much different from humans. This indicates that not all members of Fire Cult have fully evolved; they still exhibit significant animal traits. However, if it comes down to a fight, I believe only Silent City might stand a chance against them."
Cui Ming disagreed: "The Lion Dog is strong and arrogant, but in the end? It was still driven away and faced potential death. I admit that in one-on-one scenarios, we humans might not match up against Fire Cult Practitioners. However, if we employ tactics effectively and use superior numbers to eliminate their weaker forces, there is still hope."
Li Qing countered: "Brother, Competition Matches progress very quickly. For example, if you have a tactical idea and start laying it out—before you finish speaking, the opponent may already be making new moves. The Competition Match begins with three lanes that must be defended; otherwise, they will breach our defenses. Overall it's a three-on-three situation where the other two must adapt flexibly. If four or five opponents head toward the Bottom Lane, those defending can retreat without fighting to the death since it would exhaust their manpower significantly—that's a gain for us. Such tactics are hard to generalize; they usually require on-the-spot execution. For instance, if Ding Ze is targeted by two opponents and starts fleeing, teammates can ambush along his retreat path for a counterattack. But if you deliberately set up such tactics by having someone lie in wait along his escape route—it consumes manpower because you can't predict whether the enemy will pursue or not—and with only two people against two others, there's no advantage gained there. Brother, trust me; you're smart enough to make small collaborations work but coordinating larger strategies is quite challenging."
Cui Ming nodded slowly in agreement: "Hmm." He accepted others' suggestions and recognized that Li Qing's advice held some merit.
"According to what I heard, Bufon has prepared some videotapes and documentation from previous arbitration competitions. There are only a few tapes, mostly detailed records. These are not aimed at the Alliance but at the Fire Cult and Silent City, which could be considered cheating. Bufon mentioned in the last meeting that it would be sufficient for two of the top three teams to be from the Alliance. The Ding Family and Ye Family take this very seriously and have put forth their strongest lineups. However, it seems Bufon is not very optimistic about our team and hasn't provided us with the tapes or documentation."
Cui Ming said, "Just ask him for it."
Beiyue was taken aback. "This information was given to me by Wei Wei. It wouldn't be appropriate for me to just ask him directly."
Cui Ming picked up the phone. "Hello... this is Cui Ming. I'm looking for Wandering... Hello, senior, we need the videotapes... Hehe, which kind of senior do you know..."
Wandering replied seriously, "Cui Ming, it's not that I don't want to give them to you; only the Ye Family and Ding Family have them. Even the Cao Liu Family doesn't have them. This is prohibited; it not only lacks fairness but also violates Alliance rules by leaking information about arbitration competitions. Additionally, you might be misunderstanding; this material was produced jointly by the Ye Family and Ding Family, with Bufon merely supplementing some data. If you want the tapes, asking me or Bufon won't help; you need to go to the Ding Family or Ye Family instead. Conversely, I am also curious about which team Ding Family and Ye Family will share their information with."
"Alright then, thank you for your help. Goodbye." Which team would they share with? That would depend on the ambitions of both teams since the opponents in the draw are uncertain and could potentially support your rivals. Moreover, if a weaker team obtains the information, it wouldn't help them much—who do they consider strong? But if a strong team gets the information, it could create trouble for them.
Ding Ze, who had been listening intently, lit a cigarette and asked, "Why does it seem like everything you say positions us as a weak team? Even if we aren't, we're still in the middle tier. We study others' tactics to formulate our own strategies. Why shouldn't we be the ones formulating tactics that others have to break?"
Everyone exchanged glances, and Cui Ming pointed at Ding Ze. "I like this idea."
Li Qing replied, "I don't like it because the risks are too high. Indeed, if we were truly a strong team, we could research the tactics we need while forcing our opponents into a passive defense until they understand our strategy before making their plans. But are we really a strong team?"
Cui Ming and Ding Ze said in unison, "We are."
Li Qing was left speechless.
Ding Ze continued, "Li Qing, you might think I've improved over these years and started boasting, but that's just how it is. When you're afraid of others, you forget that others might also fear you. We worry about tripping over weak teams while being cautious against strong ones. But when facing strong teams, does being cautious help? It's about taking risks and going all out."
Cui Ming nodded. "I believe we must have a macro strategy. When I came out of the desert, I met Mi Xiaomo; he said his role in his team is to be hated by everyone. In other words, he wants everyone to dislike him so he can vent personal emotions and disrupt their deployment. I was surprised at first, but now I realize it's a tactic—a strategic approach. We must formulate macro strategies based on our opponents' situations. I understand what my senior means: fast-paced tactics may not showcase grand strategies well; smaller coordinated tactics might be more suitable. However, I still believe that macro strategies are necessary—for instance, identifying who our opponent's weaknesses are so we can target them as bait and frequently move their teammates around."
Li Qing thought for a moment and said, "Formulating strategies is fine, but during Competition Matches, don't rigidly adhere to macro strategies."
"Ding Ze" added, "I believe all battles should revolve around a grand strategy. We only abandon the grand strategy if we can no longer achieve our tactical goals."
"Li Qing" thought for a moment. "Let's give it a try. What do you think, 'Beiyue'?"
"Beiyue" replied, "As I said, I'm just a figurehead for this team. 'Cui Ming', from now on, you are the vice-captain." The assessment match had already shown that "Cui Ming's" leadership skills far surpassed his own.
The greatest advantage of this team was its harmony. "Li Qing" said, "Junior brother, although I believe focusing too much on grand strategy is excessive, I still support you."
"Cui Ming" smiled and looked at "Mi Xiaonan." "What about you, 'Mi Xiaonan'?"
"Mi Xiaonan" held up two fingers in a V gesture.
"Cui Ming" nodded. He had loved military strategy books since childhood and always believed that whether in the Thieves Guild, the marketplace, on the battlefield, or in romance, strategy was everywhere. Some called such people schemers or petty individuals; others referred to them as advisors, and some even labeled them as manipulative. Yet, there were also those who respected them as successful individuals. Unless one was exceptionally lucky or had a fortunate rebirth, it was difficult for someone with virtues like integrity, kindness, bravery, fairness, and justice to succeed. Whether one called it trickery or strategy, the victor takes all.
Due to his personality, "Cui Ming" would never be the type to engage in a straightforward fight where one punches and then receives a punch back until someone falls. Even as a fighter, he would employ feints to deceive his opponent.
As the registration deadline approached, a total of twenty-four teams signed up. Among them were one team each from the Ding Family and Ye Family, one from the Cao Liu Family, one from Silent City, and one from Fire Cult—these five teams garnered the most attention. Next were the teams led by Pirate King Ronk; "Lank" quickly found "Romir" and "Fanxi," a couple who worked well together after some practice drills, thus finalizing their lineup.
These six teams were also considered seed teams. The remaining eighteen teams would undergo a draw for elimination matches. After the first round of eliminations, nine teams would emerge to join the seed teams for a total of fifteen advancing to the second round. Before the second round began, there would be a Heroic Battle where all fifteen teams would start from fifteen different passages; the team that reached their destination flag first would earn a bye. A total of eight teams would then move on to the third round. Following that would be another draw for elimination matches to determine the Final Four, culminating in the championship.
In front of the Alliance Headquarters, a two-story high sign had been erected displaying the advancement route: at the top was the champion, followed by the Final Four and Top Eight, along with indications for the second and first rounds. (To be continued.)
