Eva said, "After all this, you still haven't given me an answer."
Cui Ming shook his head. "I can't understand. Mi Xiaonan is very innocent. She left the York Clan and went to Sakura Island, then returned to the York Clan, and then she met me... No, it can't be Mi Xiaonan, and it definitely isn't me. Beiyue? Are you saying you want to kill Beiyue?"
Eva didn't respond immediately. After a long pause, she said, "It's not about killing; it's about capturing alive. I don't have any other information. Someone has contacted Regis, willing to exchange the Spectral Cloak for hiring the Evil Squad to capture Beiyue alive. Unfortunately, the employer is out of the loop and doesn't know that we've disbanded. He sent Wraith to our street." This was Eva's story; Regis had formed the Evil Squad years ago, consisting of five notorious practitioners. Regis was the captain responsible for taking various commissions. The Evil Squad was quite famous in the Dawn Empire. A year ago, it disbanded because Eva and Regis were going to participate in the Alliance Assessment.
Cui Ming pondered for a long time before saying, "Thank you."
"Thank you for what?"
"You know." Cui Ming asked, "Does Regis know?"
Eva sighed. "This is our biggest failure. Once we saw Wraith, we knew we couldn't take this job. But deep down, I had immense hope for the Spectral Cloak. We needed to do something that required the Spectral Cloak. Regis couldn't convince me otherwise, so we came with a sense of luck. Since you dared to come alone today, I can tell you the truth: someone in Silent City has their eyes on Beiyue."
Cui Ming asked, "I don't understand; why tell me?" He seemed skeptical, speaking half-truths, but he wouldn't call her out on it.
Eva replied, "After Wraith died and I was injured, the Silent City Envoy contacted us. You might not know this, but we Evil Squad have a deadly feud with Silent City. Once we learned that the employer was from Silent City, how could we possibly help them? Of course, if you hadn't dared to come, I wouldn't have said anything; consider it a reward for your courage. Be careful; if Silent City is looking for trouble with Beiyue, that's not something easy to deal with."
"You just mentioned capturing alive?" Cui Ming asked. "How determined are they about capturing?"
"Absolutely do not harm her; she must stay alive and cannot be missing any body parts," Eva said with a smile. "To understand you, it's only natural to know about Beiyue's background. The answer is quite simple, isn't it? It's highly likely that it's Beiyue's missing father."
"Simple my foot! If it's Beiyue's dad, why hire you? He could just meet Beiyue directly," Cui Ming shook his head. "It's not that simple. Hey, Eva, you guys are really something. Do you and Regis have confidence in capturing Beiyue alive?"
Eva paused for a moment. "Did I say two people? There are three of us."
"Haha." Cui Ming laughed, clearly not believing her. It seemed that this cloak was indeed very important to them. Cui Ming asked, "What is Joker Jack's purpose?"
Eva turned to leave, brushing her fingers across Cui Ming's face as she passed him. "We don't even know what he really wants. Goodbye, and next time we meet, I might just kill you. Be careful."
"Got it."
Eva walked more than ten meters before stopping. "Hey, Cui Ming, don't be polite to the people from Silent City. They are a bunch of lunatics researching all kinds of perverse magic."
"If you're not going to kill me and still tell me this, are you trying to get us to fight against Silent City?"
"Pfft, with your capabilities?" Eva turned around and walked away with flair.
...
Silent City is a place devoid of justice, darkness, order, or chaos. It was established hundreds of years ago by a master of the Magic System who left the alliance in anger due to their discrimination against mages. In Silent City, there are only ranks: the city lord is level one, the council of elders is level one, the deputy city lord is level two, responsible for daily operations such as waste management, food provision, sanitation, and library maintenance. The workers doing these tasks are level three. Following them are practitioners of the Magic System. There is only one rule in Silent City: no fighting allowed.
The Magic System can be simply described as magic users. Mages have a clear distinction between good and evil: one type is white magic and nature magic, belonging to the righteous side; dark magic and Blood Magic belong to the evil side. This distinction is strict because practicing either type of magic has a lasting impact on one's mind and heart. Spell magic, summoning magic, and magical circle magic are processes of using magic and do not have a moral alignment. For instance, summoning magic can bring forth angels or spirits with white magic while dark magic can summon demons or goblins.
Non-magic practitioners are not allowed to enter the realm of Silent City unless invited by the city lord or elders. For those who practice the Magic System, Silent City is a sacred place. Regardless of whether one is on the light or dark side, reaching Silent City after mastering the Six Elements and gaining insights from its vast knowledge is crucial. However, there are too many madmen here. Some capture living people for magical experiments, others kill to test soul summoning techniques, and some feed various herbs to the living. Regular magicians obviously cannot tolerate such behavior, but in Silent City, aside from the prohibition against violence, there are no other restrictions.
As time passed and the alliance changed its stance to treat Magic System practitioners fairly, only villains remained in Silent City. It is said that some wanted criminals from the alliance also hide within its walls. Silent City, Shadow Island, the far south, and the far north are places where Alliance Hunters find it difficult to tread.
Returning from the stone bridge, Cui Ming knocked on Beiyue's door. Beiyue opened it; she had bathed and changed into a new outfit last night, but it was not sleepwear—she never wore pajamas. Beiyue was momentarily taken aback upon seeing Cui Ming, but he boldly stepped forward. Beiyue instinctively took a step back, panic flashing across her face as Cui Ming casually closed the door behind him.
Cui Ming was unsure of what abilities that envoy from Silent City possessed or if there were any listening devices around. He turned off the lights and leaned closer to Beiyue when suddenly he felt an excruciating pain in his lower body. Looking down, he realized it was due to Beiyue's knee strike. His Force shield was indeed effective, but her Force was powerful enough to break through it. Under normal circumstances, Force could not concentrate on a specific part of the body; after all, that thing didn’t always respond as its master wished.
Cui Ming groaned in pain, half-kneeling on the floor while grabbing Beiyue's arm with a look of grievance. He whispered, "Could you just use a knife instead? Seriously, with your skills, how likely do you think I am to overpower you?" Damn it! Using a knife would be more straightforward; using a hammer was pure torture.
Beiyue cautiously asked, "Did you need something?"
Cui Ming retorted, "Why else would I come to your room in the middle of the night?"
"Oh..." Beiyue was at a loss for words. Cui Ming forced himself to stand up and leaned closer to her while she struggled to restrain herself from kicking him away.
Cui Ming recognized the awkwardness of the situation and quickly shifted gears. Not wanting to suffer alone, he got straight to the point: "Eva came looking for me just now..." He recounted his meeting with Eva and everything that transpired. Finally, Cui Ming added, "From how cautious Eva seemed, I think she believes that the envoy from Silent City is watching us."
