"Unless there's someone more suitable than me, I'll gladly give up my position as captain!" Yu Tian glared at the director's elongated face, his chest adorned with shiny medals seeming to cheer him on.
Yu Tian was throwing a fit in the military headquarters of Jupiter, and the reason was clear: the bald director had snatched away a mission he was halfway through. Claiming it was to train newcomers, he was really just trying to take credit for himself, especially since such significant cases were rare.
Although the death penalty had been removed from the Galactic Constitution in this era, life imprisonment or lifelong detention might be the best punishment for criminals who were always scheming to disrupt peace and stability. This extraordinary prison break involved several notorious villains who were supposed to be locked away for life, escaping from a heavily guarded prison. Who knew what kind of crimes they would commit during their time on the run?
Yet this bald "monk" just didn't understand the danger involved—perhaps he did but chose to act contrary! Every time Yu Tian saw him, they ended up in a verbal sparring match, parting ways feeling unsatisfied. This time was no different; unwilling to dwell on these bothersome matters, Yu Tian shifted his gaze to an ashtray nearby.
"This is the directive from the Galactic Squad! A new batch of freshly graduated Galactic Warrior-level recruits has just arrived and urgently needs practical training!" The director buried his head in a pile of thick documents that seemed never-ending.
Yu Tian pulled out his Atomic Beam Gun and slammed it on the table. The titanium-cadmium alloy table was sturdy enough; the sharp sound echoed outside, causing the tea in the cup to ripple.
"That's fine! I’ll apply for a six-month leave, is that okay?!" Yu Tian completely ignored the director's face turning into a bitter green.
"Yu Tian, don't get too arrogant! Do you think this is your home? You can't slack off! Recently, there have been several missing persons cases on Earth; this is also a major case. Go investigate this matter! It will definitely give you enough exposure..." The "monk" didn't lift his head again, perhaps intimidated by Yu Tian's murderous glare.
"Fine! Go ahead and send me off! I want to see how those little lambs are devoured by those wolves. When you come begging me later, I might not help you clean up the mess! After all, this isn't the first time..." Yu Tian left that suffocating office with a belly full of grievances, taking his Atomic Beam Gun with him. The director's previously bitter expression now turned into a terrifying deep green, like a monster burning with anger but having no outlet for it.
"Just because you're a director, you think you're so impressive? If it weren't for the commander telling me to stick around for a few years, who would care about you..." Yu Tian muttered as he closed the door tightly, his frown easing as he greeted the staff.
Due to Yu Tian's fame and being a frequent visitor here, along with his handsome looks and physique, he got along well with the employees. Perhaps hearing the commotion inside, a lean agent approached him and comforted him: "You should let the director off this time; he's been going through some tough times lately (you can guess what kind of places he’s been visiting! A philosopher once said: no matter how society progresses, three types of people will never disappear: whores, gamblers, and gangsters). His wife caught him at one of those places and gave him quite a scolding. Seeing him like a wilted old plant probably means he hasn't shaken off that family shadow yet. Just spare him this once!"
Hearing him say that, Yu Tian suddenly remembered that this "monk" director was quite strict with his wife, and there were countless anecdotes about him. He thought that perhaps this time it was a relative of his wife trying to gain some merit by deliberately transferring him away. He chuckled lightly and said, "I was just joking; who wants to get angry and start a fight? Right? But when I see his shiny bald head, I just can't help it! A director can wear a hat, but why does he refuse to maintain his image? Am I right?"
"Yes, yes, yes..." the others chimed in joyfully. After chatting for a while, Yu Tian waved goodbye, exited the military building, and boarded his private spaceship heading to Sunshine Bar.
Military-related buildings occupied two-thirds of Jupiter's residential area, including testing zones, living quarters, and office areas. To collect solar energy as much as possible, the buildings were designed as castle-like structures with solar film exteriors. This also helped reduce the damage caused by interstellar storms since Jupiter's atmosphere is thin and the hazards from such storms can be significant. The greenery on Jupiter was relatively high compared to its surroundings, with trees and grass providing an excellent place for military training.
Europa's Sunshine Bar could be considered a top-tier bar. In this era, although the population was large, most people lived in specific areas on Mars. The shopping malls and entertainment venues scattered throughout space were all upscale, with most shopping done at small shops opened in private homes.
"That 'monk' actually eats meat; he has a fierce tiger at home but wants to pluck its whiskers. Truly a case of not shedding tears until seeing the coffin!" joked his friend Reynold, who had heard about the incident and teased him upon meeting.
Reynold was the vice-captain and a close friend of Yu Tian.
"Hey... you didn't call me when you came here; what have you been chatting about?" A familiar voice rang in Yu Tian's ear as he turned his head. It was Jason, another good buddy of Yu Tian. The three of them were known as the Iron Triangle because of their unbreakable friendship. No one knew why their bond was so strong; it just was.
"Kid! Where did you get those clone glasses? They're new products, right? I've heard they can be controlled by brain waves and have zero radiation." Yu Tian touched his green jacket. "Nice material; how come you're getting all these good things lately?" Jason's father was the head of a military enterprise and came from a wealthy family, but he used to prefer ordinary attire, claiming he didn't want to waste his parents' money.
"My mom insisted that since I'm twenty-three and still single, she urged me to find a wife and bought me these things. I feel embarrassed wearing the other stuff; it's too flashy!" Jason said as he ordered a drink and sat down. "Captain, what brings you here dressed in military uniform with medals?"
Yu Tian then realized he had forgotten to change his clothes and felt a bit embarrassed. After downing several shots of strong liquor, a warm buzz spread from his throat throughout his body. "Then I'll follow Reynold's lead and wear a black shirt?"
"Enough about clothes! Let's toast to our friendship and future..." Reynold raised his heavy metal cup, and the three clinked their glasses together before tilting their heads back to drink it all.
After several rounds, the alcohol began to take effect; they felt tipsy and emboldened.
Jason suddenly widened his eyes, staring at Yu Tian, motionless like a wooden sculpture.
"I'm not a beauty, am I? At most, I’m just a handsome guy. Do you have that kind of preference?" Yu Tian said, feeling somewhat puzzled and jokingly.
But Jason remained serious, then raised his cup and declared loudly, "One day in the future, I will definitely surpass you!"
The loud declaration startled Yu Tian, but he quickly regained his composure and raised his glass with Reynold, responding as they clinked their cups, "Alright, alright! Congratulations in advance. When that time comes, you have to treat us to a meal..."
"Of course! We're all brothers. Let's drink well today; it's been a long time since I've enjoyed myself like this! Cheers..."
