The waiting time almost made Alan's heart jump to his throat. In this enclosed and quiet tree hollow, the sound of his heartbeat rang particularly clear, each beat reminding him of how dangerous it was outside. He furrowed his brow slightly, a sense of foreboding suddenly welling up in his heart. He noticed that the occasional soft light coming from outside the tree hollow was somewhat unusual, carrying a sense of flickering, as if it were firelight.
Alan silently counted his heartbeats and, based on his rough estimate, about fifteen minutes had passed. He took a deep breath, clenched his fists, and gathered the courage to slowly stick his head out of the tree hollow to observe.
He stood there, stunned by everything he saw, his heart sinking to the bottom of a valley.
The entire forest seemed to be surrounded by a massive ring of fire, not just at the base of the mountain, but even the treetops in some high places were being consumed by flames. The raging fire spread like a living thing, turning trees into torches in the intense heat. The firelight illuminated the night as bright as day, but this brightness brought with it endless fear.
Alan's heart was beating so fast that it felt like it was about to jump out of his chest, the smoke and burning smell had already made him suffocate. He quickly turned back and returned to the tree hollow.
"Eilena, hurry, we must go!" he shouted anxiously, his eyes revealing an unprecedented sense of urgency.
Eilena suddenly woke up and, seeing her brother's expression, she knew the situation was too serious to delay any longer.
With no time to explain, Alan grabbed Eilena's hand, and the two of them instantly left the tree hollow. The flames were already approaching, but they had no choice but to run in the opposite direction of the fire ring.
"Brother, how far can we go?" Eilena's voice was filled with tears, but also determination.
"I don't know, but we can't stop here."
The firelight flickered in Alan's eyes, and he felt a hint of danger. At the moment he clenched his fist, a faint "crackling" sound came from a distance. It was not the ordinary sound of branches rubbing or animals treading; it carried a cunning and evil implication.
Alan tightly held his sister Eilena's hand, running non-stop through the dense mountain forest. His steps were heavy and tense, each landing feeling like a race against fate. The sound of his heartbeat and his sister's short breaths intertwined, creating a tense and oppressive scene.
The flames and smoke rapidly approached, turning the mountains and forests into a lava-like red. It wasn't just them, Alan also saw other slaves in the same life-threatening situation. Their faces contorted between fear and despair, they fled from the fire in a panic.
"Hurry, Eilena!" Alan gritted his teeth and shouted.
The smoke began to fill the entire forest, making it increasingly difficult for Alan to breathe. This was no ordinary smoke, but a toxic smoke caused by the flames. The smoke seemed like invisible hands, tightly gripping his throat and making him feel suffocated.
Not far away, a group of persecuted slaves were also fleeing in all directions, their cries becoming particularly desperate amidst the thick smoke and flames. Alan felt a wave of sadness in his heart, knowing that all of this was part of the Black Flag Army's conspiracy. They had driven the slaves into the forest and then forced them out with the flames.
"Bang! Bang! Bang!" The scorching flames spewed out behind them, igniting the trees like enraged beasts, baring their fangs and claws as they lunged towards them. The crackling of the flames echoed incessantly in Alan's ears, a sound akin to the scythe of the Grim Reaper, shattering the tranquility of the night sky.
"Alan, I can't run anymore..." Eilena's face turned pale, tears welling up in her eyes.
Alan tightly held Eilena's hand, feeling the cold sweat in her palm. The flames around them were like the claws of a beast, voraciously devouring everything. The heat and thick smoke made it almost suffocating, every breath scorching the lungs as if inhaling fire.
"Eilena, you must hold on!" A hint of tears flashed in Alan's eyes, but more prominent was determination and courage. "If we stop, we will really die here!"
Alan's gaze quickly scanned the surroundings and finally found a small exit that had not been covered by flames and black smoke. That was their only hope.
"There!" Alan pointed forcefully in that direction and then tightened his grip on Eilena's hand. "We only have one chance, we must give it our all!"
Alan used all his strength to pull Eilena towards the exit. The flames roared behind them, as if trying to drag them back into the abyss. But Alan did not allow himself any hesitation or retreat, he could only keep moving forward, until he escaped the fire with his sister.
Alan and Eilena endured the heat and exhaustion, running through the raging burning forest. Alan tightly held his sister's hand, hoping to find a chance for survival. Finally, they arrived at an open land where the flames had not yet spread.
"We did it, Eilena, we escaped!" Alan's heart lightened, and a faint smile finally appeared on his face.
However, as they stood on this piece of land, Alan suddenly felt a sense of unease. This place was completely different from the surrounding mountains and forests, as if intentionally separated to form a clearly visible exit. He suddenly realized that all of this was too coincidental.
"Wait, there... there's a problem here..." Alan's intuition told him that this exit might have been intentionally left for them.
He was about to say something to Eilena when suddenly, dark figures emerged from all around, instantly surrounding them. These dark figures were soldiers wearing dark armor, wielding spears and blades, with a well-trained appearance. They were the Black Flag Army, known for their ruthlessness and cruelty, under the command of Baron Morgan.
"Very good, very good, someone else has escaped," a captain-like soldier walked out and said in an almost playful tone, "We're just two sacrifices short, it seems the gods are on our side."
Alan and Eilena were forcefully lifted by two soldiers, they tried to struggle, but their tightly bound hands left them unable to move.
