Zhao Jun exchanged a few polite words with Xue Peng, while Fang Jia Shen, feeling somewhat awkward, extended his hand towards Zhao Jun. "Teacher Zhao, I apologize for any offense caused earlier. Please don't take it to heart."
Before Zhao Jun and the others returned, Fang Jia Shen and his companions had already heard from Cheng Zhengxiong about Zhao Jun's 'heroic deeds,' particularly the embellished account of taking down the bandits' helicopter.
In the face of such a formidable person, it was best not to provoke him.
Zhao Jun shook Fang Jia Shen's hand and smiled. "Mr. Fang, you're being too polite. It was just child's play before; no one takes it seriously. We are all Mainland Chinese, and at times like this, we should set aside personal grievances and unite against a common enemy. That is the only way forward."
Fang Jia Shen nodded repeatedly, somewhat ingratiatingly addressing Zhao Jun. "Teacher Zhao, just call me Fang; that's what everyone else calls me."
Zhao Jun smiled back. "Alright, Fang. You can just call me Zhao Jun."
Fang Jia Shen responded with an affirmative sound, while Li Wei, standing behind Zhao Jun, smugly held his 16 and asked Fang Jia Shen, "Fang, where's your buddy Ye Tong? Why isn't he with you?"
Fang Jia Shen knew that there had been some unpleasantness between Li Wei and Ye Tong over their pursuit of Jiang Rui, and he had often sided with Ye Tong against Li Wei. Now, as Li Wei teased him, Fang Jia Shen felt a bit embarrassed and stammered, "Li Wei, we got separated when Ye Tong and I ran out. Um, I'm sorry about what happened before."
Li Wei chuckled. "I was looking forward to seeing him live-stream eating shit; what a pity."
Zhao Jun shot Li Wei a glance and gently shook his head with a sigh.
What time is it now? You still haven't forgotten about that.
Cheng Zhengxiong introduced the unfamiliar person beside them to Zhao Jun and his companions. "Zhao Jun, Sister Tang, Li Wei, this is Mr. Dule from Taiwan. The Dule Group belongs to his family."
Zhao Jun smiled and extended his hand to Dule. "Hello, Mr. Dule. I grew up eating your family's Master Du instant noodles."
Dule shook Zhao Jun's hand and smiled back. "Teacher Zhao, if we make it home safely, I'll cover your instant noodle supply for life."
Zhao Jun couldn't help but laugh. "Alright then, for a lifetime supply of noodles, I’ll have to make an effort."
The group burst into laughter as Dule greeted Tang Hao'er and Li Wei with handshakes.
Dule was perceptive; from Cheng Zhengxiong's introduction of Zhao Jun and the others, he had already guessed who was in charge of the group and naturally held Zhao Jun in higher regard.
From the moment Cheng Zhengxiong introduced Zhao Jun and his companions, Dule had learned that Zhao Jun was merely a teacher at a private school—someone without status or background. Yet when Cheng Zhengxiong spoke of Zhao Jun, he did so with great admiration. Dule understood that this teacher was certainly not an ordinary individual.
A few people exchanged polite words and settled back by the campfire. Su Mei handed some cooked food to Zhao Jun and the others.
Zhao Jun held the food and looked at Xue Peng and Fang Jia Shen, asking, "Did Brother Yang escape with you?"
Xue Peng and Fang Jia Shen's faces flushed slightly. They had been locked in the same 'cell' at that time, which was where the bandits kept those who had already paid their ransom. After Yang Bing took control of Shen Kun, he was the first to enter their room, not for any particular reason, but simply because it was closest to the room where Yang Bing was held, separated by just one wall. Xue Peng was the first person to rush out when he heard Yang Bing order everyone to leave.
Xue Peng exchanged a glance with Fang Jia Shen, then lightly cleared his throat and said, "At that time, Mr. Yang instructed us to open the other cells to let people out. When we ran out, Mr. Yang was still fighting with the bandits. Later, when the bandits' helicopter returned, Mr. Yang... I'm afraid he couldn't escape."
Zhao Jun stared at Xue Peng and Fang Jia Shen, his eyelids twitching slightly as he fell silent.
At that moment, Dule spoke up from the side: "When I ran out, I saw someone in the corner exchanging fire with the bandits. He seemed injured. I don't know if that person was Mr. Yang, but if he hadn't held off the bandits, I doubt many of us would have made it out. I estimate that person must be your Mr. Yang; I hope he manages to escape safely. I want to thank him in person."
Zhao Jun nervously focused on Dule and asked about what he had seen. However, in the chaos of that moment, Dule hadn't looked too closely; he only saw Yang Bing hiding in the corner while changing magazines with one hand.
Hearing Dule's description, Zhao Jun and the others were basically certain that person must have been Yang Bing.
Zhao Jun sighed and stood up, handing the food in his hand to Tang Hao'er with a blank expression. "You all rest for now; I'll sit outside the cave for a bit. Maybe I'll run into Brother Yang."
Tang Hao'er stood up alongside Zhao Jun. "I'll go with you; having another pair of eyes is better."
Cheng Zhengxiong also stood up and said, "Brother Yang is our savior; none of us can sit still without knowing his exact situation. Let's all go together."
Zhao Jun did not oppose Cheng Zhengxiong's suggestion; he nodded at everyone and led the way toward the cave entrance.
They hadn't spent much time inside the cave; the tide hadn't come in yet and had only submerged half of the entrance.
The group waded through the water as they exited the cave and gathered among some rocks near the entrance. Cheng Zhengxiong looked at Zhao Jun and said, "Zhao Jun, how should we proceed? You take charge."
Now that three more people had joined them, Cheng Zhengxiong's suggestion for Zhao Jun to take charge clearly established Zhao Jun's position within their group.
With thoughts of Yang Bing and those who had escaped weighing on his mind, Zhao Jun didn't waste time on pleasantries. After a moment of contemplation, he said, "It's not bright yet; searching everywhere seems unrealistic. Let's set up near here so we don't miss Brother Yang when he arrives."
Cheng Zhengxiong and the others nodded in agreement. The island was fraught with danger; waiting patiently before dawn might be their best option. Although the chance of encountering Yang Bing again was slim, it was better than nothing—if they missed him this time, they might not know when they would meet again.
Zhao Jun looked at Cheng Zhengxiong and directly assigned tasks: "Da Xiong, your injury isn't healed yet; stay here at the entrance to keep watch. Su Jie, you'll team up with Da Xiong to take care of him."
Zhao Jun turned to Li Wei and Fang Jia Shen and said, "Li Wei, Fang, you two will pair up. Go find a suitable spot on the cliff to hide. If you encounter anyone trying to escape, ask them about Brother Yang and the others. Remember, do not reveal that we have a hiding cave at the bottom of the cliff; this is our foundation, and we cannot afford any accidents."
Li Wei nodded and replied, "Don't worry, I'm not foolish."
With that, Li Wei drew his large Desert Eagle from his waist and handed it to Fang Jia Shen. "Here, Fang, take this gun for now. Just don't fire it recklessly."
Fang Jia Shen accepted the Desert Eagle with gratitude, surprised that Li Wei would generously give him a gun considering their relationship.
Zhao Jun then turned to Dule and said, "Dule, how about you team up with me and Hao'er? The three of us can search along the coastline for a while and gather some food as well."
Dule nodded without hesitation. "It’s an honor to be in a group with Mr. Zhao and Sister Tang."
Tang Hao'er smiled as she handed Dule the 9mm pistol that Zhao Jun had given her for protection. "Mr. Dule, here’s a weapon for your defense as well."
Dule hesitated for a moment, glancing at the AUG slung over Tang Hao'er's shoulder before accepting the 9mm with a grin. "Having a gun in hand gives me more confidence."
Zhao Jun looked at Cheng Zhengxiong and the others and said, "To make identification easier, we need to agree on a code word."
Cheng Zhengxiong nodded. "That makes sense; just one will do, and we'll all remember it."
Without further delay, Zhao Jun thought for a moment before stating, "The code word is: Survive. The response is: Victory."
