As the campfire blazed to life, Zhao Jun initially worried that the thick smoke rising from it would drift out of the cave and attract bandits. After observing for a while, he finally felt at ease.
The cave's ceiling formed a vast dome, with several openings leading outside positioned far from the apex. The smoke from the fire swirled up to the dome before gradually dissipating.
Zhao Jun confidently opened his backpack and poured out the seafood he had gathered from the sea onto the ground. Using a sharpened stick, he skewered the seafood and placed it over the fire to roast. In no time, a rich aroma began to waft through the air.
“Wow, authentic grilled seafood! Absolutely genuine,” exclaimed Li Wei, who was squatting nearby helping Zhao Jun, unable to contain his drool.
Tang Hao'er approached with a piece of clean gauze in hand, unable to resist sniffing the delicious scent greedily.
Zhao Jun smiled at Tang Hao'er and said, “Hao'er, sit down. It’ll be ready to eat soon.”
Tang Hao'er huffed and extended her hand toward Zhao Jun. “Take off your clothes; I’ll help you wash them.”
Zhao Jun paused for a moment, glancing down at his damp pants, and grinned awkwardly. “Is that really necessary?”
Moving in and out of the cave required wading through water. Zhao Jun had made three trips back and forth, and during his last trip to gather firewood, he had encountered rising tides, leaving only his shoulders and collar dry.
Tang Hao'er glared at Zhao Jun and mimicked his tone. “Stop talking nonsense and hurry up! You two can use some branches to make a rack by the fire to dry your clothes.”
Zhao Jun grinned as he stood up. “Alright, just wait a moment.”
He walked over to his scattered belongings and pulled out the camouflage outfit he had stripped off earlier. Finding a corner, he changed out of his wet clothes and sheepishly stepped back out. “How about I just handle this myself?”
Tang Hao'er stared wide-eyed as she snatched the wet clothes from Zhao Jun's hands. Zhao Jun grinned; he could hardly imagine that a wealthy young lady like Tang Hao'er would actually do laundry.
Li Wei, who was setting up a frame, chuckled and said, "Sister Tang, my clothes are wet too. Why don't you wash mine while you're at it?"
"Not a chance, do it yourself," Tang Hao'er replied, shaking her head as she walked away.
Li Wei laughed heartily and gave Zhao Jun a thumbs-up, teasingly saying, "Man, you might not bow to anyone else, but you definitely bow to her."
Zhao Jun let out a dry laugh and sat down on a rock by the campfire. His relationship with Tang Hao'er was purely accidental, and he couldn't help but wonder what their connection would be like if they managed to escape this place. From Li Wei and Tang Hao'er, he had learned a lot about her and the Tang family. The thought of being associated with such a colossal family was daunting. Perhaps everything would change once they got out; who knew? Zhao Jun didn't have time to dwell on these thoughts now.
Tang Hao'er finished washing Zhao Jun's clothes, and both he and Li Wei prepared the food.
It was an incredibly lavish breakfast: grilled crab, grilled abalone, grilled sea cucumber, and grilled fish. The sight of the food made everyone's eyes light up. Zhao Jun initially thought there was enough food for everyone, but to his surprise, they devoured everything in one sitting.
It made sense; they hadn't eaten much the day before and were starving. Now that food was in front of them, they attacked it like wolves. Thankfully, the sea was generous; when the tide went out again, they could gather more food. Next time, they should prepare even more to satisfy everyone's appetites.
While Zhao Jun and the others were fine, Cheng Zhengxiong had it worse. Still dazed from the heat of the fire, he was drawn by the aroma of food and got up. However, Zhao Jun worried that seafood might irritate his wounds, so he only advised Cheng Zhengxiong to drink some coconut water and eat a bit of coconut meat.
There were plenty of coconut trees near the coast of the island, but harvesting coconuts was quite labor-intensive. Zhao Jun exerted considerable effort to bring down a few coconuts. They were excellent resources: coconut water quenched thirst, coconut meat staved off hunger, and they were easy to store. Zhao Jun planned to call Li Wei later that night to go out and gather more for their supplies.
After everyone had eaten their fill, the sea had already risen to its peak. The entrance of the cave where they had entered was completely submerged in seawater. Even if someone outside knew they were hiding here, it would be difficult for them to get in. Moreover, such a hidden place would likely go unnoticed if not for Zhao Jun's chance discovery during low tide.
After surveying their surroundings, Zhao Jun confirmed that they were absolutely safe hiding here. He turned back to sit by the campfire and said to Tang Hao'er, Li Wei, and Su Mei—who were drying their wet clothes—"We should be safe here; I bet that gang of bandits has turned this island upside down by now."
Li Wei chuckled, "Even if they rack their brains, they won't guess that we've hidden inside the belly of the sea. I think this place is pretty good. Let's stay here until those bandits leave before we go out."
Zhao Jun frowned and said, "Whether you want to go out or not is your choice. I need to go out and rescue Brother Yang and the others."
Tang Hao'er shifted her position, sitting next to Zhao Jun. Supporting herself with the clothes Zhao Jun had changed out of, she looked at him firmly and said, "I want to save Brother Yang too. Without Brother Yang, we won't be able to escape."
Li Wei's face turned slightly red as he awkwardly said, "I never said I wouldn't save Brother Yang. It's just that we only have these two guns, and there are so many bandits. They have helicopters and boats..."
Zhao Jun glanced at Li Wei, who quickly closed his mouth in embarrassment.
Zhao Jun reached for the magazine of his AK and removed it, counting the bullets as he spoke in a low voice, "I still have eighteen bullets left. Hao'er, how many rounds do you have in your AUG?"
Tang Hao'er hurriedly placed Zhao Jun's clothes on her lap and grabbed the AUG beside her. She swiftly removed the magazine and counted the bullets before looking up at Zhao Jun. "I have nine rounds left."
When Zhao Jun had given the AUG to Li Wei initially, it was fully loaded. Tang Hao'er had fired one shot, but Li Wei had wasted twenty rounds while shooting at the helicopter. Given their current supplies, it was quite a waste.
Zhao Jun said to Tang Hao'er, "I still have two full 5.56mm magazines. Hao'er, hand me that gun. I'll leave this AK in the cave; it doesn't have many bullets left. Whoever goes out should take it for self-defense."
Tang Hao'er let out a small sound of reluctance as she handed over the AUG to Zhao Jun, her lips slightly pouting in a way that suggested she felt wronged.
