As she tasted the sweetness of love for the first time, Tang Hao'er curled up like a happy cat in Zhao Jun's arms, drifting off to a sweet sleep.
Women often find it easy to feel satisfied in love; a lingering gaze, a sweet kiss—these are enough for a girl just beginning to experience the fruits of affection.
However, Zhao Jun, like dry tinder, had been ignited by Tang Hao'er. The flames surged high, yet at that moment, Tang Hao'er was contentedly nestled in Zhao Jun's embrace, softly snoring.
Zhao Jun was on the verge of breaking down. He stared wide-eyed, inhaling the scent of Tang Hao'er, longing to kiss her lips resting against his chest. But he feared waking her and disturbing her beautiful dreams.
Those in their first love often yearn for closer intimacy but are also afraid their actions might upset the other. That anxious mindset can only be understood by those who have passed through that age.
Zhao Jun had even thought about bolder moves. He had secretly spent over ten minutes gently lifting Tang Hao'er’s shirt with his fingers, feeling the smooth warmth of her skin on her waist.
As for going further… he shook his head. It wasn't the right time; not far away were Cheng Zhengxiong and Su Mei still asleep, and besides, the innkeeper wouldn’t allow it.
Finally making it to midnight, Zhao Jun gently lifted Tang Hao'er’s head and sat up. He pulled out a canvas backpack, flattened it, and tucked it under her head. With a sigh of relief, he withdrew his arm and climbed out from under the blanket, carefully covering Tang Hao'er again.
At that moment, moonlight streamed through the cracks in the rocks and illuminated Tang Hao'er’s face.
Zhao Jun felt his heart flutter and couldn’t resist leaning down to plant a soft kiss on her lips.
Tang Hao'er’s long eyelashes fluttered twice as if sensing Zhao Jun's absence. Unconsciously, she reached out toward where he had just been lying.
Zhao Jun quickly took her hand and waited until she stopped moving before gently tucking her hand back under the blanket. Filled with happiness, he tiptoed out of the cave.
Stepping outside, the sea breeze hit him like a jolt. He turned around but didn’t see Li Wei anywhere and couldn’t help but call softly, “Li Wei? Li Wei?”
In response to Zhao Jun’s call, faint snoring came from a nearby shadow.
Following the sound, Zhao Jun found Li Wei wedged between two rocks, wrapped in a blanket and sleeping soundly with an AK rifle in his arms.
Zhao Jun squatted down in front of Li Wei with an annoyed expression. He lifted Li Wei's head with one hand and blew into his palm before giving him a playful flick on the forehead with two fingers.
Li Wei jumped up suddenly, exclaiming, "Who, who hit me?"
Zhao Jun picked up the AK that had rolled out of Li Wei's arms, stood up, and kicked Li Wei with annoyance. "If I were the enemy, you'd already have your throat slit. Hurry back to the cave and get some sleep."
Li Wei smiled sheepishly. "Well, I'm just really tired."
Zhao Jun waved his hand at Li Wei. "Go on, get some rest."
Li Wei mumbled an acknowledgment and, still a bit dazed, wrapped himself tighter in his blanket as he walked toward the cave.
Zhao Jun hesitated for a moment, wanting to call out to Li Wei to ask for his blanket back, but then decided against it.
If he asked for the blanket back, would that mean letting Li Wei crawl into Tang Hao'er's blanket after entering the cave?
Zhao Jun would rather freeze than put himself in that awkward position.
He checked the AK in his hands; everything seemed fine. He raised his binoculars to survey the surroundings and noticed nothing unusual. Holding his gun, he wandered around nearby until he found a concealed spot with a good view. He sat down against a rock and sweetly reminisced about the feeling of sleeping next to Tang Hao'er.
Love is truly a mysterious thing. Zhao Jun hadn't closed his eyes yet and surprisingly felt no fatigue at all.
However, this love had come at such an inopportune time, suddenly appearing in this perilous environment where survival was uncertain.
But then again, if it weren't for Li Wei dragging him into this chicken dinner event, he would never have had the chance to meet Tang Hao'er.
Perhaps this is what people often refer to as fate.
As Zhao Jun was lost in thought, he suddenly heard rustling footsteps coming from the direction of the cave entrance.
His expression changed instantly as he quickly raised his gun.
“Zhao Jun? Zhao Jun?” A soft voice called from the cave entrance.
Zhao Jun sighed in relief and stepped out of the shadows, waving at the figure emerging from the cave. “Hao'er, I'm over here.”
Tang Hao'er spotted Zhao Jun and joyfully ran over, playfully wrapping her arms around his. “I’ll keep you company on watch. Look, I even brought my gun!”
As she spoke, Tang Hao'er proudly lifted the AUG in her hand.
Zhao Jun felt a surge of emotion but maintained a stern expression as he replied, “This is foolish. The bandits will definitely be searching for us. We need to conserve our strength. Hurry back and get some rest; I’ll wake you when it’s almost dawn.”
Tang Hao'er wrinkled her nose at him. “But you didn’t rest either! I just want to talk with you for a bit.”
Zhao Jun kept his serious demeanor. “I’ve already rested. Be good and go back to sleep.”
Tang Hao'er huffed, “You’re lying! You haven’t slept at all; I know it! Hmph, and you even snuck your hand under my clothes…”
Zhao Jun's face flushed red in an instant. No way, she knows about that? Wasn’t she snoring then?
Tang Hao'er giggled and tiptoed to plant a kiss on Zhao Jun's lips, teasingly saying, “You big pervert! Just now, you secretly kissed me.”
Zhao Jun couldn’t help but cough awkwardly.
Tang Hao'er laughed and hugged him tightly. Zhao Jun coughed again to change the subject. “So, did Li Wei come in and wake you up?”
Tang Hao'er pinched Zhao Jun's arm playfully and pouted, “No way! It was that stinky shoe you had stuffed in the backpack under my head that nearly made me throw up!”
Zhao Jun couldn’t help but laugh, prompting Tang Hao'er to pinch him harder. “You’re still laughing!”
Zhao Jun embraced Tang Hao'er gently. “Alright, I won’t laugh anymore. Hao'er, you should understand the situation we’re facing now. Perhaps our chances of making it back alive aren’t very high.”
Tang Hao'er trembled slightly, letting out a gentle sigh as she wrapped her arms around Zhao Jun's waist and looked up at him with a hint of melancholy. "If only I had known you earlier, I wouldn't have signed up for this event."
Tang Hao'er had joined this group precisely to escape the suitors that constantly surrounded her. If Zhao Jun had appeared in her life sooner, she wouldn't have considered hiding away in such a distant place.
However, if Tang Hao'er hadn't joined this group, they would never have crossed paths. If this had been a proper tour group, Zhao Jun might not have had the chance to showcase himself and stir Tang Hao'er's heart. In that case, Tang Hao'er would still be the aloof Tang Hao'er, and Zhao Jun would remain the teacher at the private school; their lives would not have intertwined.
Fate is indeed a curious thing; it often appears when you least expect it.
Zhao Jun held Tang Hao'er close, gazing into her eyes as he softly said, "Hao'er, don't worry. I promise I'll take you home so you can see your parents again."
Tang Hao'er met Zhao Jun's gaze for a moment and nodded vigorously. "Yes, I believe you. If we can go back, I want to be with you like this."
With that, Tang Hao'er tightened her embrace around Zhao Jun and tilted her head back, slowly closing her beautiful eyes.
Zhao Jun understood what this meant. He held her even closer and leaned down to kiss her tender, blossoming lips.
After what felt like an eternity, they finally pulled away, both gasping for breath.
Tang Hao'er took one of Zhao Jun's hands and placed it under her shirt on her back, blushing fiercely as she said, "Since you like to touch me, go ahead. But you can only touch my back..."
Zhao Jun's face turned as red as a sunset. He realized that the actions he had taken over the past several minutes had already been noticed by Tang Hao'er.
