As night fell, the bandits at the Bandit Nest were busy extorting money from their victims when they realized that another helicopter, which had gone out earlier, had not returned.
Upon hearing the news, Charlie immediately sent someone to summon Shen Kun. After a long wait, an excited Shen Kun finally emerged from a room, walking briskly towards Charlie, who was standing at the helicopter's door. From a distance, he laughed heartily and said, "Boss, congratulations! These cowards can’t handle a scare..."
Charlie interrupted Shen Kun with a dark expression and said in a serious tone, "Shen, the helicopter that went out this morning hasn’t come back either."
"What?" Shen Kun's face changed instantly.
Charlie continued, "I’m afraid something might have happened to them. I’ll take a few people to look for them. You stay here and keep an eye on things. Contact me via the intercom if anything comes up."
Furrowing his brow, Shen Kun replied, "Only five people went out, and two of them are women. They shouldn’t have the capability to deal with our men. It’s likely that the helicopter had some malfunction and made an emergency landing somewhere."
In truth, even as Shen Kun spoke, he wasn't entirely sure. Fortune Island was only a little over two square kilometers; even if the helicopter had encountered trouble and landed somewhere, those on board would have returned by now.
Charlie gave a wry smile. "Let’s hope so. Keep a close watch at home and instruct the brothers to be more aggressive. The sooner we wrap this up, the better; otherwise, if the military gets involved, things could get complicated."
Shen Kun nodded. "Don’t worry; we must evacuate within a week at most. By the way, Boss, how did your operation go today? Did you sell those one-million-dollar band-aids?"
Hearing Shen Kun shift the topic to this, Charlie burst into laughter. "Today’s haul was good; I’ve already received over eighty million. There are still some funds being raised that should be wired to our account by tomorrow at the latest. It seems these sheep are still valued highly in their families' eyes."
Shen Kun grinned. "I managed to extort over one hundred thirty million. Hehe, Boss, after this job, we’ll all be billionaires."
Charlie laughed heartily and patted Shen Kun on the shoulder. "It was all your idea; I’m sure when it comes time to split the money, everyone will be happy to give you a little extra."
Shen Kun smiled back. "Then I’ll thank you in advance, Boss."
Charlie chuckled and instructed Shen Kun, "Keep an eye on things at home while I go find those bastards. It would be best if they died out there; that way we can all share a little more when it comes time to divide the spoils."
A few pirates who had already climbed onto the helicopter waiting for Charlie couldn’t help but laugh loudly. When it came time to split the money, it would be best if everyone else was dead and only one remained to claim it all.
Charlie was like that, but he absolutely did not want to see his subordinates actually die out there. Their deaths would mean there was an external threat to their existence.
Charlie boarded the helicopter, and with a command, it roared to life and slowly took off. The searchlight at the front lit up, sweeping across the dark forest and various corners below.
Yang Bing stood by the window, frowning slightly as he watched the helicopter ascend toward the mountain peak. He had been silently observing the enemy situation. In the morning, Charlie and Shen Kun took four people on the helicopter to pursue Zhao Jun and his group. When they returned, only Charlie and Shen Kun came back; the four people they had taken did not return with them. It seemed that Charlie had dropped them off to continue searching.
By noon, three of the four who had gone out returned, but Yang Bing kept his gaze fixed on the entrance, waiting for the other person to come back. As time passed, he still did not see that individual return.
Later, another one of the four from the morning took off again in a helicopter, heading in the same direction as before, and they had yet to return.
Now Charlie had taken six people with him on another flight, again heading toward the direction where they had pursued Zhao Jun earlier.
Could it be… that Zhao Jun’s group had shot down that helicopter?
That was impossible.
Not even Zhao Jun’s group could manage that; even he himself wasn’t confident in bringing down a helicopter from above, let alone these guys who were armed with advanced automatic weapons.
Yang Bing furrowed his brow as he pondered what was happening outside. Meanwhile, Zhao Jun and his four companions found a rocky cave formed by stones that had rolled down from the mountain near the seaside.
The cave was not very large; there were several cracks in the ceiling through which they could see stars in the sky. The ground was covered with fine sea sand. Although the cave was drafty on all sides, it was relatively dry, providing them with a temporary shelter from wind and rain.
Zhao Jun and Li Wei gathered some dry branches nearby and used a ZIPP lighter they had confiscated to start a fire. Zhao Jun took out two packs of Combat Ration from his belongings and handed one each to Tang Hao'er and Su Mei, saying in a low voice, “We only have this food left. Let’s eat some to replenish our energy.”
The others were already starving, and upon hearing there was food, their eyes lit up.
Zhao Jun took out an energy gel from Tang Hao'er's Combat Ration pack and walked over to Cheng Zhengxiong, offering it to him. “Mr. Cheng, you should eat more. I’ll see if I can help you get that bullet out later.”
Cheng Zhengxiong pushed the energy gel back toward Zhao Jun with a smile. “I’m not too hungry yet; let them eat first. Teacher Zhao, I’m feeling quite good right now; please go ahead.”
Zhao Jun nodded at Cheng Zhengxiong and said, "Alright, I just checked the medical kit. There’s no anesthetic, so Mr. Cheng will have to endure some pain."
Cheng Zhengxiong chuckled, "A little pain now is much better than having a bullet lodged in my bone causing constant agony. Teacher Zhao, we’re practically life-and-death friends now. You don’t have to keep calling me Mr. Cheng; it sounds too formal. If you think highly of me, just call me Big Bear. That’s what my friends call me."
Zhao Jun laughed lightly, "Big Bear? Ha, alright then, Big Bear, I’ll be Doraemon."
Everyone paused for a moment before bursting into laughter. No one expected Zhao Jun to make a joke at such a tense time.
Tang Hao'er, unable to contain her laughter, reached out to ruffle Zhao Jun's hair and asked with a puzzled expression, "Doraemon, where's the propeller on your head?"
With the joke lightening the mood, the tension among them eased a bit—perhaps that was exactly what Zhao Jun intended.
Zhao Jun chuckled heartily and turned to rummage through his canvas backpack. He pulled out a flat stainless steel flask, twisted off the cap, took a whiff, and handed it to Cheng Zhengxiong. "This should be brandy. Take a sip; I'm about to get started."
"Sure," Cheng Zhengxiong replied this time without hesitation. He took the flask from Zhao Jun's hand and tilted his head back to take a large gulp without even looking at it. After exhaling, he returned it to Zhao Jun with a grin. "Not brandy; it's Scotch whisky. But it’s not aged enough—less than eight years in the cask."
Zhao Jun smiled as he took back the flask. "I don’t know much about foreign liquor; they all taste the same to me. Big Bear, lie down; let’s begin."
"Alright, let’s do this." With Su Mei's assistance, Cheng Zhengxiong lay down on the sandy ground, his tone as solemn as if he were facing execution.
Zhao Jun had never performed surgery before, let alone remove a bullet. However, he had no choice but to dive in headfirst; he couldn’t let Su Mei or Tang Hao'er do it either. As for Li Wei—better not mention him at all. The moment he heard that Zhao Jun was going to extract the bullet from Cheng Zhengxiong, he had already scurried away. If anyone was going to operate on Cheng Zhengxiong, it would be better for him to just end it quickly instead.
