In the room, Zhao Jun rolled up his sleeves and rubbed the bruises on his arms, whispering to Tang Hao'er, "Sister Tang, you really went too far; it's all purple."
"Serves you right! Who told you to... hmph." Tang Hao'er blushed and quickly turned her head away.
"I'm turning off the lights," Zhao Jun announced before abruptly shutting off the room's lights, plunging it into darkness.
Tang Hao'er huffed and, peeking through the curtains at the shadowy figure of Zhao Jun, said, "Hmph, you shameless beast, taking advantage of the situation."
Zhao Jun grinned but didn't dare to respond. It was a fact that he had kissed Tang Hao'er; there was no denying it. He thought to himself, "I also had my first kiss with her. Didn't she gain anything from it?"
With the lights off in the room, the courtyard outside, illuminated by searchlights, appeared bright.
Zhao Jun focused intently on the situation in the courtyard, feeling increasingly disheartened.
Being trapped in such a place made escape seem nearly impossible.
Seeing that the lights in Zhao Jun and Tang Hao'er's room were off and there was no longer any entertainment to be had, the crowd outside laughed and began to disperse.
"Damn it! If I get the chance, I'll make you pay," Ye Tong cursed fiercely at the closed door.
That bastard! Even if she's second-hand goods, I want her. Marrying her means marrying the entire Old Tang Family. As for that teacher, I'll make sure he ends up in pieces.
Ye Tong walked away a few steps in anger and shouted at Shen Kun, who was busy nearby, "Shen Kun, hurry up and bring me some drinks!"
It seemed that Ye Tong wouldn't be getting any sleep tonight.
Fang Jia Shen carried the luggage for both him and Ye Tong with a look of pity and said to Ye Tong, "What a great catch; what a shame."
"Shut up!" Ye Tong shouted angrily as he stormed into a room with the door wide open.
Zhao Jun, with a dark expression, was peering through the gap in the curtains, observing the chaos outside. This was supposed to be the darkest moment before dawn; the courtyard was in disarray. Shen Kun was busy arranging accommodations for the remaining guests, looking overwhelmed.
The people attending the Chicken Dinner Team were all from wealthy backgrounds, and even if they each had their own room, they would feel it was inadequate. Now that Shen Kun was trying to fit four of them into one room, complaints were inevitable. They also made some unreasonable demands that left Shen Kun in a difficult position; he was already feeling the pressure.
However, as each arrangement was completed, the courtyard gradually quieted down. The searchlights on the Watchtower swept back and forth across the yard, making it feel eerily like a concentration camp.
Zhao Jun's face was as dark as a pot bottom. Just then, a searchlight passed by, and he silently lowered the curtain a bit, preparing to lift it again once the light moved away to observe what was happening outside.
At that moment, a fragrant breeze quietly appeared beside Zhao Jun. Tang Hao'er had somehow sneaked up next to him. Leaning against Zhao Jun's arm, she peered through the curtain's gap and whispered, "Zhao Jun, are these people really bad?"
Zhao Jun replied softly, "Most likely. Regardless of whether they are bad or not, we can't stay here. We have to find a way to escape."
Tang Hao'er pouted, "There are so many of them, and they have guns. There's barbed wire on the walls—how can we escape?"
Zhao Jun took a deep breath and said quietly, "There will be a way. Let's wait for an opportunity to get to Brother Yang's room. He used to be in the military; he must have some ideas."
As soon as Zhao Jun finished speaking, there came a gentle knock on the iron door.
He quickly widened the gap in the curtain and changed his angle to look toward the door. He saw two figures standing close to it in the shadows.
"It's Brother Yang and Li Wei," Zhao Jun whispered to Tang Hao'er before hurriedly opening the door.
Outside, Yang Bing pushed Li Wei into the room and swiftly followed himself, closing the door silently behind them while keeping his hands on it.
At that moment, the beam of the searchlight swept by again, failing to detect Yang Bing, who had already entered the room of Zhao Jun and Tang Hao'er with Li Wei.
In the flickering shadows cast by the searchlight, Tang Hao'er anxiously grabbed Yang Bing's arm and whispered, "Brother Yang, what should we do now?"
Yang Bing lightly patted Zhao Jun's arm and said in a low voice, "You did well just now; you didn't alert them."
Zhao Jun grinned, while Tang Hao'er huffed in response.
Yang Bing addressed the three of them quietly, "Let's discuss what to do next. I don't know what these bandits are waiting for, but I suspect this brief window before dawn is our only chance to escape."
Li Wei trembled as he spoke, "Brother Yang, this is an island. Even if we manage to escape, what can we do?"
Yang Bing frowned and replied, "Not escaping means waiting for death. If we get out of here, we can take control of our fate. Even if we die, we can die with dignity. As long as we can leave this place, we'll find a way to survive. The best outcome would be to establish contact with the outside world so we can hide and wait for rescue. Even if we consider the worst-case scenario, as long as we leave this den of wolves, at least we can engage in guerrilla warfare against them. As long as we're alive, there's a chance to turn things around and rescue the others."
"I agree with Brother Yang; let's escape and fight back," Zhao Jun said without hesitation.
"I'm with Brother Yang too," Tang Hao'er nodded vigorously.
Li Wei forced a smile and whispered, "Even if they are kidnappers, they are just after money. We could give it to them."
Yang Bing and the others glared at Li Wei in unison. Startled, Li Wei quickly added, "No way! We should fight back; who’s afraid of whom?"
Yang Bing patted Li Wei on the shoulder and said softly, "Perhaps paying the ransom according to their demands could be a way out. However, I think that possibility is slim. Think about it—most people in this group have deep family backgrounds. Anyone could easily pay millions to hire professional killers to hunt them down worldwide. They must have anticipated this. In my opinion, even those who pay the ransom might not make it back to the mainland alive."
A chill ran down Li Wei's spine as he looked at Yang Bing and said firmly, "Then let's fight them."
Yang Bing let out a sound of acknowledgment, reached out to pull back the curtain just enough to peek outside, then turned and whispered, "We don't have much time. Everyone crouch down so we can discuss our plan."
Zhao Jun and the others nodded nervously.
As the searchlight swept through the room, illuminating it briefly, Yang Bing drew a simple layout of the courtyard on the ground with his finger, pointing at it as he spoke to the three of them. "The two searchlights in front make a full sweep every seven seconds. When there's a gap, we'll head out in this direction. There are three more rows of houses behind us. We'll move along Room One to the back of this row and find a corner to climb over the wall."
Yang Bing looked up at Zhao Jun and said, "Teacher Zhao, you go first. Bring a blanket to lay over the barbed wire."
Zhao Jun nodded vigorously, quickly getting up to grab a blanket from the nearby bed and clutching it tightly.
"Sister Tang, follow Teacher Zhao. Li Wei, you're third," Yang Bing instructed, fixing his gaze on Tang Hao'er and Li Wei.
Tang Hao'er and Li Wei hurriedly nodded in understanding.
Seeing that the three had grasped his intentions, Yang Bing stood up and hid behind the window. One hand reached for the door lock while the other lifted the curtain slightly, squinting as he observed the situation in the courtyard.
In the yard, Shen Kun was still busy organizing members of the Chicken Dinner Team who hadn't settled in yet. Charlie stood in front of the helicopter smoking a cigarette; the helicopter had already powered down. A dozen armed men in masks seemed to have relaxed somewhat, gathering in small groups and laughing together.
Yang Bing's expression was serious as he focused on the outside, waiting for a fleeting opportunity.
Zhao Jun and the others huddled together, their expressions tense, muscles taut, with beads of cold sweat forming in their palms.
The beam of the searchlight flashed by again, and Yang Bing swiftly opened the door just enough to create a gap before whispering urgently, "Go."
