Brother Hongjie from Uncle Man Yin's family had arranged a marriage and spent nearly the entire day helping out at his home. Throughout that day, Aiyaximu and Xiao Feng assisted Zhao Meirong in steaming dumplings and frying rice cakes. Concerned about getting her new clothes dirty, Zhao Meirong's mother found her own cotton-padded jacket for her daughter to wear, transforming the city girl into a village maiden.
Neighbors and aunties came to visit the new bride, playfully teasing Zhao Meirong, "You’re already putting her to work on her first visit!"
On New Year's Eve, the sound of firecrackers filled the air. Zhao Meirong repeatedly reminded Qin Chizian, "You’re not allowed to go out drinking; stay home and keep your wife company!"
It was impossible not to visit others during the New Year celebrations, so Qin Chizian decided to take Aiyaximu along, and they ended up visiting several gatherings throughout the night.
By the time they returned to their own courtyard, it was nearly dawn. Unable to sleep, Qin Chizian sent New Year greetings via text to a group of people: Vice Mayor Qi, Brother Zhang, Secretary Wan, Village Chief Jian, the County Mayor, County Party Secretary, Brother Xiong, Sister Hui... and a bunch of folks from Yanjing.
This prompted Aiyaximu to complain, "You people in the system are really troublesome!" Yet she too lay in bed sending messages to Sister Liu and Tajikgul, wishing them a Happy New Year.
The days passed quickly with feasting and socializing. On the fourth day of the New Year, Brother Biao called: "There’s a high school reunion tomorrow at our county's Guobin Hotel. You have to come!"
Qin Chizian asked him, "Did you organize it?"
Brother Biao replied, "Nope, it was called by Wu Xianfei from the county Agricultural Bank."
"Alright, I’ll definitely be there," Qin Chizian said.
Feeling bored at home, Qin Chizian decided to take Aiyaximu along with him. Gao Jiazhuang from the county fertilizer factory was once Qin Chizian's sports committee member in high school. He and class beauty Wang Bingbing were handling the money and names for the event. Qin Chizian handed over two hundred yuan. "This is for both of us."
Noticing it was still early, he pulled Aiyaximu along. "Come on, let me show you around our county."
They spent half a day wandering through shopping malls and almost lost track of time until Brother Biao called again: "Why aren’t you here yet? You two are the last ones!"
They hurried back to the guesthouse.
Inside the private room, it wasn’t as crowded as Qin Chizian had expected; only about ten people were seated around a large round table. A quick glance revealed that most were working outside after graduating high school.
Sitting next to Brother Biao, Qin Chizian whispered, "Why are there so few people?"
Brother Biao replied softly, "Wu Xianfei organized this; he thinks it’s pointless to contact classmates from the countryside..."
Wu Xianfei was once the class monitor—short and slightly overweight. Once everyone had arrived, he stood up and tapped on the table: "Today we’re having this gathering for two reasons: first, to reconnect with old friends; second, to enhance communication among classmates and see if we can share resources... The reason we didn’t invite those from the countryside is that I feel we no longer have any resources in common."
He then pointed to a medium-built girl sitting next to him who was slightly plump. "This is my girlfriend Hu Yanyan; her father is the deputy town chief of Chengguan Town."
His words were straightforward and direct.
"For example," he continued, "I work at our county Agricultural Bank. If anyone needs a loan, feel free to reach out... Right now I'm facing pressure with 'opening red,' and I really hope my classmates can support me."
After finishing his speech and looking around at everyone, his gaze landed on Qin Chizian: "Qin Chizian, you’re the only one who came from the countryside; why don’t you say a few words?"
Qin Chizian's dislike for this classmate suddenly surged.
He stood up and addressed everyone, "Dear classmates, President Wu, I am honored to speak on behalf of those of us from the countryside. I come from a rural area and currently work there as well. It's a small place, so I won't bore you with the details; it's not worth mentioning."
Wang Bingbing, who was assigned to Jiangcheng University of Technology and now works at the county fertilizer factory, looked at the beautiful Aiyaximu and asked, "Who is this?"
"This is my girlfriend. Like me, she works outside," Qin Chizian replied.
