A conference room decorated entirely in natural wood, with antique wooden chairs, was only modernized by the A4 printout in the hand of the man at the end of the long table and the black suit worn by Chen Rui.
“Chen Rui!”
“Present!” Chen Rui stood up straight.
“From today, you will be responsible for the tasks of the A Action Team. The authorization level of the Action Team leader has been raised to B Level.” The man pressed the A4 paper down forcefully towards Chen Rui, causing several sheets to fly up into the air, one of which landed squarely on Chen Rui's face.
“Understood!”
Every time he thought back to this moment, he couldn't help but feel puzzled. He could only remember this part clearly; everything before it was a blur. How had he gotten to this point? What was it all for? What were those hazy memories?
Chen Rui stared blankly at the screen, with no one coming to check on him. This was typical in the newly established Action Team; previously, there had been nine Action Teams numbered one through nine. Chen Rui's Action Team was the tenth, but its designation had changed to a letter.
“Maybe it’s just someone’s whim,” Chen Rui muttered, shaking his head as he refocused on the screen.
…
The sudden appearance of a giant beast caused chaos on the ground. Somewhere below, a thick white smoke billowed up, undoubtedly from the Portable Air Defense Missiles carried by soldiers.
The purpose of these missiles here was to concentrate fire on the 'Whale,' resulting in many being lost on the ground.
Although the giant beast was massive, it had excellent digging capabilities, adept at tunneling. However, due to their destructive actions, most bridges and buildings had lost their structural integrity. It was truly fortunate that this group had not yet fallen into any traps.
“Those idiots!” The captain couldn't help but feel anger rise within him. The true purpose of the portable missiles was to strike at the 'Whale.' Of course, a 'Whale' that could withstand attacks from Fighter Jet air-to-air missiles likely didn't care much about these weapons.
They weren't trying to corner the 'Whale' into a specific situation; their equipment simply wasn't capable of that. They only needed to strike its weak points and quickly collect some fresh samples.
This was the true purpose of the thousands of Airborne Troops.
Deploying thousands just to collect a fresh sample clearly demonstrated the terror of the 'Whale' or the military's helplessness.
The 'Whale' had not left the airport, continuously hovering above it. However, its enormous size and unmatched maneuverability led to the Air Force Unit struggling; air-to-air missiles rarely hit critical spots and could even miss, striking the Allied Forces instead.
"Park here!" the captain shouted.
"Are we at the designated position?" Xu Yao couldn't help but ask, as they were still nearly a kilometer away from the 'Whale.'
"With such a big guy, it won't turn easily. We'll stay here. Everyone get out and be on alert; prepare a group of missiles."
A crowd of people got out of the vehicle, and Xu Tao and his companions stood around, unsure of what to do, staring blankly.
"Don't just stand there; come over and lend a hand," the captain said while adjusting a support frame, which eased everyone's awkwardness.
"Aren't portable missiles supposed to be fired directly? Why do we need to set them up?" Zhang Shi asked.
"They can be fired directly, but the effect is different. This way is more precise, and it's easier to adjust," a Black-Faced Man explained.
Zhang Shi glanced at his shoulder insignia—two thick stripes and one thin stripe—indicating that this black-faced man was already a veteran with over fourteen years of service.
The first group of five missiles was set up and locked onto the target. Everyone waited anxiously for the arrival of the 'Whale.'
"Can these really penetrate?" Xu Tao asked. Earlier from a distance, he had seen air-to-air missiles inflict damage on the 'Whale,' but the results were far from ideal. Could these portable missiles really harm it?
"This is a High-Explosive Triple Charge along with two Drilling Explosive Shells, and all we need to do is take out its First Floor skin."
A loud roar echoed from afar, and it was clear that only one type of creature could produce such a sound. Everyone's hearts felt as if they were being pointed at by the Sword of the Hanging Summit, filled with deep unease.
"It's coming," Zhang Shi muttered, stating the obvious. Everyone's gaze was fixed on the 'Whale' as it began to turn.
Although the 'Whale' was agile, in relation to its massive size, a distance of one kilometer was just about its turning radius limit; after all, it measured three kilometers in length.
"Prepare for battle." The captain instinctively adjusted his cap, a seemingly casual gesture that revealed his tension. He was more anxious than anyone else because he alone knew the true mission.
The previous operation was merely a distraction. Thousands of Airborne Troops and dozens of Main Battle Tanks were there solely to delay the movement of the 'Whale.'
As for who could secure a fresh specimen first, that person would earn the first ticket to leave on the departing aircraft—the only one.
Among all the forces present, only one team would successfully return; the rest were merely bait to draw fire. Their purpose was to attract more giant beasts and Herschel, waiting for the final moment...
He didn't want to die, nor did he want his team members to perish. Thus, he had to seize this lone opportunity, even though it seemed so bleak.
"Don't be nervous; I'm not nervous at all. Why are you so tense? You’re supposed to be a soldier," Xu Tao said with a smile at the captain.
"If you could just loosen your grip a little, it would help," he replied. It felt much easier to chat with someone.
The 'Whale' moved with surprising agility, completing a 180-degree turn in just over ten seconds and continuing to circle around the airport.
"Hold your fire for now. We'll attack its tail; that's where it's more vulnerable. Fire on my command."
"Understood." The Black-Faced Man held a telescope in one hand and a cylindrical object in the other, making it easy to guess what it was.
From a distance, the creature known as the 'Whale' resembled a Blue Whale in size, but up close, its body was covered in pistons that made it look exceptionally fierce.
"Fire!" the captain suddenly shouted, startling everyone. It was normal to feel fear in front of such a colossal creature, but fear often leads to thoughts of avoidance. The captain's shout effectively jolted everyone back to reality.
In the chaos of the battlefield, such a sound was hardly noteworthy.
"Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh, whoosh." Five Missiles flew toward the Whale's tail. At this moment, the sky had not yet brightened, and the explosions created dazzling flashes that illuminated the area like beacons on a dark rainy night.
After the high-explosive shells detonated, chunks of flesh were visibly ejected from the tail. Unlike Earth creatures, its blood was light gray, and the pieces of meat that fell to the ground were clearly larger than a car when compared to that massive being.
The captain quickly drew a dagger and pulled out a medical bag from his waist. He rushed to the scattered flesh and cut out a piece the size of his palm to place into the bag.
The Black-Faced Man hurriedly followed with the black box. The captain placed the bag inside and secured it with a password lock.
"Mission code 111, mission completed. Requesting return!" The captain quickly opened the radio.
"Report your coordinates! A helicopter will be dispatched shortly; please protect the cargo!"
"Specific coordinates: 15855, located above the airport! There is an alien biological residue here along with several vehicles and obviously some civilians."
"Understood. The helicopter will arrive in three minutes; please wait at your location."
"Received!"
The captain turned off the radio, finally revealing a smile. "There are three minutes left, and the plane will..."
A massive tremor shook the ground, and the captain's expression changed instantly. He hurriedly tossed the box to the Black-Faced Man. "Quick..." Before he could finish his sentence, the ground beneath him suddenly caved in, and he sank down with it.
The Black-Faced Man caught the box and turned to run. "Get in the car! Drive back!"
Everyone snapped out of their daze and scrambled into the vehicle. The Black-Faced Man threw the box to Zeng Zhi. "Hold on to this! You all go ahead; I'll cover you!"
"That's nonsense! If we're leaving, we leave together!" Xu Yao shouted desperately. In just two days, there had been too many separations and too many sacrifices. Despite only a brief encounter, Xu Yao couldn't bear it—couldn't bear to leave...
"Thanks." Zhang Shi was the first to start the engine, turning around and speeding away. Xu Tao, unlike Xu Yao, glanced at the Sergeant Major—the Black-Faced Man—before driving off as well.
"Remember! Don't fly too high; find a place to land anywhere, somewhere with tanks, and wait for the helicopter!" The voice from behind shouted, truly someone with caretaker potential.
There were still four soldiers in the vehicle; how could they not know about this?
The Black-Faced Man swiftly reloaded the portable missile, glancing at the rising behemoth before him with a smirk. "Who did this? It's so ugly."
In the rearview mirror, the explosion of the portable missile engulfed both the behemoth and the Black-Faced Man. The behemoth was clearly hit hard, its body leaning back as it fell, causing tremors in the ground.
After passing through the gate, the three vehicles quickly found a tank. Nearby were two teams responsible for fire support. One soldier got out to negotiate with their leader and soon came back with an answer: patience was required.
Everyone's hearts relaxed once more, but Yu Shiming's frown brought tension back. "We have to wait again; let's hope nothing goes wrong this time."
The earth began to tremble again as two behemoths emerged simultaneously from three o'clock and nine o'clock directions of the tank. Everyone froze in shock—were they targeting us now???
"Are we being pursued?" Xu Tao couldn't help but ask.
"Not quite," Zeng Zhi replied, pointing into the distance. "All the tanks are surrounded by giant beasts; we are ambushed by them collectively."
"Enemy forces are attacking!" came the shout from inside the tank.
"Loading completed."
"Target locked."
"Fire!"
With a thunderous roar, a shell was launched, but the giant beast simply blocked it with its massive arm. The shell only struck its arm, causing no fatal damage.
"Hurry! Use the portable missile!" a captain shouted.
"We're out of time." The four Veterans who had followed everyone else sat down cross-legged, passing cigarettes and lighting them.
A loud bang echoed as a tank was crushed into the ground or flattened like a pancake. Two giant beasts had already reached their position, and the best way for them to attack was to stomp. Their towering heights and unimaginable weights meant that no one could escape this disaster.
"It's a pity we won't see any fireworks," one Veteran remarked.
"The captain probably thinks we don't know. Why should one person bear it all alone?"
Everyone had given up on resistance. Surrounded by the two giant beasts, there was no way to drive out; even without driving, they couldn't match the beasts' speed. They decided to relax in these final moments.
"What are your fireworks?" Guo Luxing asked.
"That one over there. It seems like you can see it, but not everyone can," the Veteran pointed to a missile flying in the sky.
This missile was not just any portable or air-launched missile; it was a missile equipped with a Fusion Weapon.
As the missile approached the 'Whale,' its mission was complete. The warhead ignited, and the sudden flash of light could be seen for several kilometers around the airport, blindingly bright.
"Wow, that really is quite... quite a nice firework. It's been years since I've seen fireworks," Zhang Shi sighed.
After the flash came the enormous mushroom cloud, but unfortunately, everyone had already missed that sight.
...
"Ladies and gentlemen, congratulations on completing your dream. This flight is about to land at China Capital Airport. We will begin our descent shortly, so please ensure your seatbelts are fastened. If you have any questions about the dream, please contact our staff. Thank you for your cooperation."
In that half-dreaming state, all seven passengers in first class heard the same voice and were awakened simultaneously.
Fear, sadness, doubt, joy.
Almost everyone displayed these expressions; each person surely had their doubts, but not a single one reached out to contact any staff member. It wasn't that they didn't want to; the key issue was that the rude attendant hadn't told them how to reach anyone.
"Ah, sorry, sorry! I had a little situation and arrived late." A person in uniform walked in from the back cabin, their black suit adorned with three distinct yellow stripes on the cuffs...
