I was walking down the street when suddenly, a chubby little boy rushed over and hugged my leg tightly. He looked up at me with his big, blinking eyes and said, "Mommy, I finally found you!"
I was taken aback. This kid was adorable, but unfortunately...
I had been single for eighteen years and had never even had a boyfriend, so where did this big son come from?
I squatted down and asked him, "Little buddy, where are the adults in your family?"
"My family lost," he replied.
I was speechless. "How can you lose an adult?"
He just stared at me with wide eyes.
Just then, a man came running over, panting heavily. "Sorry, he's a bit mischievous."
The man was quite handsome, and the little boy was undeniably cute. But I couldn't let my guard down. Human traffickers didn't care about age or gender; they only cared about whether they could make a profit.
I positioned the little boy behind me protectively and asked, "Who are you?"
The man started to respond, but the little boy peeked out from behind me and exclaimed, "He's my daddy!"
Immediately, I went into defense mode. "Oh, so you're a human trafficker!"
"No wonder you target children; they're easier to sell, right?"
"What a shame for such a good-looking guy to run into me today; you're out of luck!"
The man looked utterly confused as he stared at me.
He explained, "I'm not his dad; I'm his uncle."
The little boy chimed in, "Yeah, he's my uncle."
"Then why did you just say he was your dad?"
The man scratched his head awkwardly. "This kid is a bit mischievous; he likes to joke around."
The man apologized to me, "Sorry for the trouble."
I waved my hand dismissively. "It's fine; I really like kids."
"Since you're his uncle and not his dad, is it too much to ask him to call me Aunt?"
I pinched the little boy's cheek. "Come on, call me Aunt."
The little boy complied, calling out, "Aunt!"
I responded with a smile and shot a proud glance at the man.
Hmph, you think I can't handle you?
After thanking me, the man left with the little boy in his arms.
I watched the man's tall figure retreating and felt a twinge of regret in my heart.
What a great guy; why isn't he mine?
The next day at work, I unexpectedly ran into that uncle-nephew pair again.
In the lobby on the first floor of the company, the little boy spotted me immediately.
He happily exclaimed, "Aunt!" and then jumped into my arms.
What’s going on?
Why has my popularity suddenly skyrocketed?
Men like me, and kids like me too.
What kind of luck am I having?
The man looked a bit helpless. "He's just a kid; he doesn't understand. Please don't take it personally."
"I don't mind at all; of course not."
"If I minded, I wouldn't let him call me Aunt."
I smiled as I pinched the little boy's cheek. Then, I playfully teased the man with my gaze, "Don't you think so?" The man averted his eyes calmly. Great, another failure.
While waiting for the elevator, I ran into that uncle-nephew duo again. Seeing so many people in the elevator made me feel cheerful. More people meant more opportunities! I waved to the man, "Come over here, there's space!" He hesitated for a moment but didn't move. Just then, the elevator doors closed.
I vaguely heard the little boy's innocent voice say, "Uncle, you're so dumb; you failed again." What was that? Failed at what?
After the afternoon meeting, I saw that uncle-nephew pair again in the conference room. No way! What a coincidence! The man looked a bit uneasy when he saw me. I greeted him cheerfully, "What a coincidence!" He nodded, "It is quite a coincidence."
I sat next to him and tried to get closer, "What brings you to our company?" The man replied succinctly, "To discuss cooperation." Wow, is he that wealthy? Turns out he's one of our major clients!
