Xu Nuan stood on a sturdy branch, her hand gripping the trunk that still yearned to grow, but her heavy gaze was fixed on the person below.
Gu Ze, who had trained in Sanda, faced off against a Steel-Toothed Crocodile with a short knife in hand. Unlike the gentle demeanor she had first observed, from her vantage point, his deep brown eyes were resolute, and a confident smile played at the corners of his lips. Even in the face of the highly dangerous Steel-Toothed Crocodile, there was no hint of retreat or fear in his eyes.
As a human, he was undeniably weaker compared to the modified Steel-Toothed Crocodile. Yet this man named Gu Ze bent slightly at the waist, knife poised, staring intently at the creature, ready to strike. His presence alone seemed to momentarily paralyze the Steel-Toothed Crocodile.
In Xu Nuan's eyes, the Steel-Toothed Crocodile was extremely perilous. In the past, if she had been alone, her first instinct would have been to flee; if escape was impossible, she would have sought a way to attack and ensure her own safety.
Today, however, she was part of an impromptu team under the protection of Gu Ze and Xu Hang. This realization stirred an odd feeling within her.
She recalled her life before entering the game—one characterized by being spoiled and unaware of danger. As memories surged like a tide, Xu Nuan noticed Xu Hang slowly circling behind the two Steel-Toothed Crocodiles.
In an instant, it became clear to her: Gu Ze was responsible for drawing the attention of the Steel-Toothed Crocodile while Xu Hang was poised to deliver the real attack. This was cooperation.
As she caught sight of others perched on nearby trees or sharing her branch, their expressions filled with fear and concern, Xu Nuan steadied herself. Her face remained calm and unruffled as she closely monitored the movements of the two below.
Hungry animals often lose their ability to think clearly, while humans excel at prioritizing safety regardless of their surroundings.
Gu Ze confronted one of the Steel-Toothed Crocodiles while another one watched him hungrily. Soon enough, the second Steel-Toothed Crocodile lost patience and lunged directly at Gu Ze.
Just as that Steel-Toothed Crocodile prepared to attack, Xu Hang bravely plunged his knife into the end of its tail, which had swung wide due to its sudden movement. That spot was relatively soft on the creature's body. The violent reaction from the Steel-Toothed Crocodile confirmed that Xu Hang's strike had been effective.
Whether human or animal, during an attack, one tends to focus entirely on their target while neglecting their surroundings.
Just as Xu Nuan was about to applaud Gu Ze and Xu Hang for their successful strategy, the Steel-Toothed Crocodile, which had been confronting Gu Ze, turned its attack towards Xu Hang.
“Xu Hang, watch out!”
Gu Ze's warning came too late for Xu Hang, who had been focused during the previous attack. The crocodile's glistening teeth were now just inches away from him, directly in front.
Seeing this scene, Xu Nuan gripped a nearby tree trunk tightly, suppressing her urge to rush in and help. Her Rationality reminded her that there was no chance of defeating these two crocodiles; she shouldn't take that risk. She had to continue the game and find that person.
This was why Gu Ze's next action surprised Xu Nuan.
Just as the Steel-Toothed Crocodile was about to bite Xu Hang, Gu Ze summoned an unknown strength to grab the crocodile's tail and forcefully threw it to his left. This temporarily saved Xu Hang from danger but exposed his back to another Steel-Toothed Crocodile.
“Gu Ze!”
Deng Yinyin screamed in terror, her voice piercingly sharp.
