Chapter One Hundred and Seven: Shadows Under the Night
"The World Government Conference is convening, discussing three key issues..."
"A rebellion has erupted in the North Sea Nation, led by the revolutionary Mr. Long..."
"Under Morgans' leadership, the World Economic News Agency reported a third-quarter increase in newspaper sales by % compared to last year."
"Fashion trends..."
"..."
"It's getting late; let's call it a day."
Nico Robin glanced at the evening sky, set her book down, took a sip of coffee, and spoke softly.
"Mm."
Xiaqiu nodded and sank into the ocean.
"Another day has passed."
Nico Robin stood up, stretched lazily, and walked back into the woods, entering her house.
Now, Nico Robin's house was rebuilt for the third time after being destroyed twice. It was larger and sturdier than before.
Many collected items could now be used, and the house had expanded from its original seven or eight square meters to two rooms, totaling twelve square meters, along with a shed.
The rooms were divided into a bedroom and a kitchen; the bedroom was relatively spacious while the kitchen was only one level.
Nico Robin entered the kitchen, put on an apron, took out a piece of beef tenderloin, set up a frying pan, added oil and seasonings, and began to fry.
After frying the steak, she placed it on a plate. Then she cooked two eggs and set them aside, along with some washed greens.
Once everything was ready, Nico Robin put a pot of water on the stove to boil. She returned to the dining table, opened a bottle of wine, poured it into a glass, picked up her knife and fork, and began to eat.
"The taste is not bad."
Nico Robin took a bite of the steak. Although it differed from authentic steak in flavor, it was still quite good.
She raised her glass of wine, took a sip, and smiled with satisfaction as the corners of her mouth lifted.
Black Fish had brought another ship filled with plenty of beef, perfect for cooking, but there was too much meat.
Some was marinated, some was eaten immediately, and the rest was given to Black.
After finishing her steak, Nico Robin took her plate and utensils outside to wash them. Once cleaned, she placed them in a corner of the kitchen where there was a rack.
At that moment, the water had boiled. Nico Robin carried the kettle outside to the wooden shed.
Inside was a large wooden tub filled with fresh water.
Nico Robin poured the hot water into it, steam rising as the temperature increased.
"Almost there."
She dipped her hand into the water to check the temperature; it was a bit hot but still bearable.
So she went back to grab a towel, soap, and a loofah sponge before heading outside. She set her things aside and then removed her clothes, revealing her fair and alluring figure.
Her long neck, smooth white skin, and delicate collarbone were striking.
Her full breasts resembled two large coconuts, with a slender waist and curvaceous hips. Her long legs were eye-catching; they were rounded with graceful curves.
She walked to the edge of the wooden tub, stepped onto a stool, and slowly lifted her leg to place it into the water. Her delicate jade foot dipped into the warm liquid as she tested the temperature, and then she gradually submerged her entire leg.
"Mm~."
Nico Robin slowly entered the wooden tub, crouching down as the hot water enveloped her neck. Waves of warmth washed over her, and she couldn't help but let out a contented sigh.
After soaking for a while, Nico Robin picked up a loofah sponge to wash her body. Once done, she stepped out of the tub and rinsed herself off with soap.
She dried herself, wrapped a towel around her body, but it couldn't fully conceal her ample curves. Her long legs, glistening with droplets of water, were left exposed.
Wearing slippers, she walked into the room, opened a bottle of milk, and began to drink it eagerly.
"Ah!"
Nico Robin had gulped down half of it when she wiped the white liquid from the corner of her mouth and shook her head lightly, revealing a satisfied expression.
On this ship, there were still seven or eight bottles of milk left—what a pleasant surprise.
Entering her bedroom, she munched on cookies while finishing the remaining milk. Then she pulled out a chair and sat at the table, taking out a notebook. She flipped to a blank page and wrote down the date: "April 26, 1518."
"It's already been more than a year and a half."
Nico Robin momentarily lost her focus. She clearly remembered arriving on October 15, 1516. On the twenty-first day of that month, Bad Luck brought a ship that marked the beginning of her record-keeping.
Now it was April 26, 1518—one and a half years had passed.
A whole year and a half.
During this time, she had been on a deserted island with only a fish for company—a notion that once seemed unbelievable.
Yet here she was.
She had surprisingly become accustomed to this kind of life.
Although life was dull and boring, with limited activities to engage in, she no longer had to worry about deception, betrayal, or being sold out.
Every day passed in a tranquil manner, serene and leisurely, feeling completely natural.
In the morning, she would wake up and wash up, then clean her room, followed by exercising and training her Devil Fruit abilities.
Through her training, her Devil Fruit ability had increased from a maximum of two hundred arms to four thousand—an increase of a full twenty times. (In the original story, it took two years to go from two hundred to ten thousand.)
This was the first time Nico Robin had actively trained her abilities, and she was astonished by the significant change.
After lunch, Nico Robin would take a short nap and then start communicating with Black at two in the afternoon.
In the evening, she would return to cook dinner. After eating, she would take a shower or do laundry, then record the date and write in her diary before going to sleep.
Day after day, year after year.
Life was plain but immensely desirable.
Compared to a life of turmoil and hardship, this kind of existence was far more appealing. If given the choice, she would prefer to live like this for the rest of her life.
But that wasn't possible; she still had dreams—to decipher Historical Texts and explore the obscured history of the past century.
Not only for herself but also for her mother and those who were killed in Oharra.
On the contrary, it was precisely because of the two-year agreement that Nico Robin could truly enjoy these two years.
"In the afternoon, I read through the ship's newspapers aloud to Black; I still need to read the next set of papers."
Nico Robin switched notebooks and recorded what she had done today. After finishing, she pinched the bridge of her nose, feeling a bit anxious inside.
In just six months, she would be leaving, but she was somewhat worried that Black might deceive her.
Despite the immense trust they had built during this time, their relationship had grown closer, and they had become good friends.
However, recently, he seemed to be hiding something from her. His body had undergone changes; at least that massive Pectoral Fin had disappeared.
Moreover, his head looked different as well. His mouth was slowly protruding, and his eyes had shifted from the side to a diagonal front view.
Whenever she asked him about it, he would say nothing and kept his body hidden in the sea.
During this time, he had also distanced himself from her while listening to stories; aside from that, he wouldn’t come near her.
What on earth was happening?
Nico Robin felt slightly on guard due to Black's unusual behavior, worried that he might not keep his promise when the time came.
But even if that were the case, it wouldn’t matter much.
Nico Robin turned her gaze toward the ship, where two Transponder Snails were located. One was smaller and resting with its eyes closed.
That one had a limited communication range.
However, the larger one could connect to other places. It couldn't cover the entire Grand Line, but at least it could notify Crocodile to come and rescue her without any issues.
She had obtained it from the ship a year ago.
Yet she hadn’t actively contacted anyone for help.
The factors of agreement were minimal; although she had a two-year pact with Black, she was ultimately coerced into it and felt no psychological burden in breaking it.
The bigger reason was that she hoped to calm down, improve her own strength, live a stable life for a while, and reflect on herself.
At least the outcome is good; the changes brought by the Devil Fruit ability are enough.
Moreover, she wanted to tame that Black Fish. With it, she wouldn't have to fear encountering the Navy on the ocean.
However, Black seemed a bit unusual right now. If he was unwilling to fulfill the agreement later, she would have no choice but to call for help, unable to stay here indefinitely.
With this thought in mind, Nico Robin stood up, yawned, took off her clothes, changed into her pajamas, extinguished the oil lamp by her bedside, walked over to the bed, pulled back the covers, and lay down.
"Time to sleep."
Nico Robin curled up her body and closed her eyes, drifting into slumber.
What was that sound?
Just before dawn, Nico Robin was suddenly jolted awake by a loud noise and immediately sat up.
Thud.
A few seconds later, another sound echoed.
"What’s happening outside?"
Furrowing her brow, Nico Robin got out of bed and walked to the kitchen to look outside.
In the moonlight, she saw a massive beast resembling a crocodile slowly approaching. Its movements were strange; it took a step forward and then paused for a while before taking another step.
It was as if it was deliberately slowing down.
Yet even so, it made a tremendous noise.
"Is that a monster from the sea I've never seen before? Is it planning to ambush me? What about Black? Could he be in trouble?"
Nico Robin squinted her eyes and then opened them wide. "Wait, how is this monster... hmm?"
She pulled the door open and stepped outside, striding confidently towards the creature. With her arms crossed over her chest, she said nothing, but fixed her gaze on it.
In the next moment, Nico Robin saw the massive beast stop its movements, staring at her with its mouth agape, frozen in place.
It even lifted one leg but forgot to put it down.
Caught in the act, how embarrassing.
