In the evening, my sister-in-law took them to the night market for snacks. She called me, "Zixuan, come out quickly. I'm taking you to eat something delicious."
I refused, "No need, I've already eaten."
"What did you eat?" My sister-in-law's voice was sharp. "Wang Zixuan, do you think you're so important just because you have money?"
"Can't you even give us the face to have a meal?"
"Exactly," my brother chimed in from the side. "Sister, your sister-in-law is just being kind."
"Come on over."
I was speechless. What else could I say? I could only change into some decent clothes and wait for them downstairs.
The night market was bustling with people and full of excitement. My brother and sister-in-law were enjoying their food, while my parents also indulged in quite a bit. I trailed behind them, slowly sipping on a cup of juice.
Seeing me like this, my sister-in-law immediately became displeased. "Wang Zixuan, what do you mean by this?"
"Why are you just drinking beverages and not eating anything?"
"I had a big lunch; I can't eat anymore," I explained lightly.
She snorted coldly. "I see you look down on me. You know I grew up in the countryside, so you're deliberately trying to embarrass me."
My parents chimed in as well. "Zixuan, your sister-in-law is just being kind."
"Right, just eat a little bit."
I pursed my lips and deliberately said, "Brother, didn't I give you two hundred thousand?"
"Why don't you let your sister-in-law eat something better?"
"Two hundred thousand?" My sister-in-law exclaimed, "Why are you giving him so much money?"
"He's your brother and your boss; his money is your money, isn't it?" I feigned confusion.
She paused for a moment, then quickly realized.
Right, my brother's money was indeed her money.
She fell silent immediately.
My brother shot her a glare and pulled her forward. "Alright, let's go. I'll take you to eat something delicious."
"Wait." I suddenly stopped and looked at a nearby stall.
It was a booth selling handmade crafts—necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings—all exquisitely beautiful.
The vendor was an elderly woman in her seventies, with gray hair and a lively spirit.
She smiled at me and then pointed to the items on the table, indicating that I could choose for myself.
Curiously, I picked up a necklace and asked her how much it cost.
The old lady held up five fingers.
"Five hundred?" I was a bit surprised; I hadn't expected the necklace to be so expensive.
She shook her head and then took out a sign that read: "I am deaf and mute; please take care of me."
I suddenly understood; she was deaf and mute.
After thinking for a moment, I took out my phone and typed to her:
"Ma'am, I want this necklace and these bracelets. Can you tell me how much they cost?"
The old lady was taken aback for a moment but then pulled out a calculator, tapping away before turning the screen toward me.
Five thousand three.
I nodded in agreement, indicating it was fine.
Just as I was about to pay, a large hand reached over and pressed down on my wallet.
"Wait."
I looked up to see my sister-in-law standing in front of me, her face filled with anger. "Wang Zixuan, have you lost your mind?"
"Are these broken things worth so much money?"
"Do you know you've been ripped off?"
I frowned, "What do you mean?"
"What do I mean?" My sister-in-law sneered, "Don't think I don't know; you did this on purpose."
"These things are worth at most a hundred bucks, and you actually spent five thousand three? Are you just burning through your money?"
She grew more agitated as she spoke and turned directly to the old lady:
"We're not paying for this. We don't want these things."
With that, she shoved the money into my wallet and placed the necklace and bracelet back on the table.
"Alright, let's go." She grabbed my arm and started to pull me away.
I firmly grasped her hand and forcefully shook her off.
"Wang Zixuan, what are you doing?" she shouted angrily.
I glared at her, "Sister-in-law, who gave you the right to touch my money?"
