"Madam, someone has sent a gift outside, and they said it's for you," the butler said curiously as he examined it, unsure of what was inside.
"For me?" Huang touched the expensive gift box, excited and eager to find out who had sent it. She couldn't wait to open it... "Ah... ah..." When the box was opened, several bloody fingers lay inside, causing Huang to scream in terror and throw the box to the ground, trembling in fear.
"Ah..." The maids in the room were initially confused by her screams, but when they saw the bloody fingers on the floor, they all screamed and covered their heads, instantly creating chaos.
"What happened?" Chen Xiaode had just entered from outside, his face filled with anger. Upon hearing the screams inside, his expression darkened. Just as he was about to explode in rage, he suddenly noticed the bloody fingers on the ground and stumbled back a few steps, shouting, "Someone! Someone!"
"Sir," the butler rushed over after hearing his voice, addressing him respectfully.
"Where did this come from?" Remembering the corpses hanging at the city gate and seeing Huang's bloody severed fingers, he felt nauseous and pale, his questioning tone betraying his unease.
The butler also saw the fingers on the floor, his face turning white as he panicked. "Just... just now someone delivered it at the door and said it was for Madam," he stammered. How could it be fingers? If Madam got scared like this, they would all suffer.
"Sir, catch that person! Catch them!" Huang screamed upon hearing this.
"Take this away," Chen Xiaode closed his eyes for a moment to maintain his remaining composure. He ordered the frightened maids to leave. Soon, only Huang and he remained in the room, a faint smell of blood lingering in the air that made one feel nauseous.
"Sir, why don't you send someone to catch them?" Huang felt dissatisfied with his calm demeanor. She thought about that heartless person who dared to scare her with such a thing—there would be no peaceful sleep for her tonight.
"How do I catch them?" Chen Xiaode glared at her angrily and asked coldly, "What wicked deeds have you done to provoke such revenge?" He hadn't even blamed her for ruining the Chen family's fortune yet she was already getting defensive; she was becoming increasingly audacious.
"Revenge?" Huang was taken aback and shook her head. "I haven't killed anyone or set anything on fire; who could possibly want revenge on me?"
"Hmph, whether you did or not, you know in your heart, Huang. I warn you, this is Chen Residence, not your Huang Family. If something like this happens again, you can go back to your Huang Family and don’t ruin my Chen Family’s fortune," Chen Xiaode was already furious inside. Huang's defiance only fueled his anger further.
Huang was startled by his outburst and scolding; she felt uneasy. Recalling those bloody fingers made her heart skip a beat as she thought: Could that incident have been exposed? No, it couldn't be; that incident happened five years ago—who would know?
At that time, the father wanted to eliminate Xuanyuan Hui but couldn't find an excuse, so he ordered the destruction of the fishing village to create the illusion of a pirate attack. She had planned to get rid of Chen Qingluan as well, which was why she arranged for that village. However, while the fishing village was destroyed, Chen Qingluan survived, which was hard to believe.
"Hmph," seeing Huang sitting there in a daze, Chen Xiaode coldly snorted in dissatisfaction and said angrily, "Don't let me find out you've been doing anything sordid behind my back. Let me tell you, today there were over ten black-clad men hanging from the city wall, all targeting Zhu Qingluan. And now, someone has sent you a severed finger; you should understand what that means better than I do!"
"I... what do I understand?" Huang, who had initially felt guilty, became defiant under his scolding and retorted sharply, "Your heartless daughter doesn't even acknowledge you as her mother. It's despicable! Now she wants to kill me, her own mother! You should be scolding her, not me!" What was going on? What did Zhu Qingluan know? Why would she do such a thing?
The Eldest Son of the Huang Family was dead. Although she pretended to be sad on the surface, she was actually quite pleased because this meant her brother would become the head of the Huang Family. Once their father grew old, everything would belong to her brother.
"Enough already! Stop making a fuss; my head is killing me!" Chen Xiaode's face grew even darker as he dealt with her incessant nagging.
"My lord," Huang observed his expression and with a sly glance asked gently, "Even if someone is plotting against Zhu Qingluan, it's those black-clad men who are dead. Why are you so anxious?"
"What do you know?" The mention of this only fueled his anger further. "The emperor ordered me to investigate the identities of those black-clad men. Where am I supposed to go for that? Ask that girl? She won't even show herself! What am I supposed to investigate?" If he couldn't find anything out, the emperor would surely blame him for being useless, and he would be even more humiliated.
He had once had a merchant's daughter; it felt awkward in his heart. He never expected that she would look down on him as her father and end up being mocked by others. Just when he thought he had gained some favor from the emperor, he was faced with a dilemma that left him stuck between a rock and a hard place.
"..." Unsure if it was guilt or something else, Huang fell silent. She remembered that these matters might involve her own father and chose not to speak further.
Though she wasn't sad herself, her father would surely be heartbroken. Her elder brother was their father's entire hope and pride; losing him meant losing all expectations. Therefore, he would definitely seek revenge for his brother. However, she never imagined that her father would directly target Zhu Qingluan or that Zhu Qingluan would resort to such extreme measures in retaliation—it truly gave her a headache.
At the Prime Minister's Residence.
"Investigate; let him see what he can find out," Prime Minister Huang held Chen Xiaode's mission in complete disdain. His precious daughter didn't even acknowledge him as her father—how could she possibly tell him anything amicably? It was simply impossible!
"My lord, over ten assassins are gone, and Zhu Qingluan is unharmed; only one maid died," Luo Bing said with some regret.
"Life is truly long," he thought, grateful for his preparations; otherwise, it would have been him lying dead now.
"Continue to keep an eye on her. If there's a chance, we must kill her," he ordered. This woman could not be of any use to him; she had to be eliminated first.
"Understood!" Luo Bing replied without a word of protest, fully aware of the master's grudge against Zhu Qingluan.
In the courtyard.
"Miss, please don't do this. At least eat something!" Aunt Lin and Little Luo rushed over to take care of Qing Luan, worried as they saw her refusing food and drink.
"Yes, Sister Qin'er wouldn't want to see you like this," Little Luo added, trying to persuade her.
"I'm fine. I just need some time to calm down," Qing Luan said, unable to tolerate their incessant chatter. She needed revenge; she had to avenge Qin'er... that thought consumed her mind, leaving her with no appetite whatsoever.
